When this happened, I asked myself what if that squad had lost the tournament? What would have happened then? And my question was sadly answered by England in the last Euro Cup competition, when team's loss was placed almost entirely on the black players and their Englishness and place on the team was called into question
@zefyrisd69
@zefyrisd69 2 года назад
it'd be nice if you don't put England and France in the same basket on this. France's team has already lost several times (and very badly twice too) while being with that many peoples of colour. The blame wasn't shifted on these peoples at all. French citizens perceive that team as being fully French, the players themselves perceive themselves as French and are proud of representing their country, and it annoyed the PLAYER THEMSELVES just as much as the fans when someone called them "Africans". The only peoples in France that complain about the skin colour of the team are the racist far right, and they do it no matter if the team wins or lose. By saying "Africa won" Trevor without knowing this played right into France's racist far right representatives' agenda, which is why the ambassador protested, kindly asking Trevor to not do it. Unfortunately, Trevor did not understand still and tried to play it smart without informing himself. I appreciate Trevor, but he was wrong this time. Doesn't really matter, it's old stuff now. But his arguments can be contested easily by simply checking what happened in the last 20 years for the French team.

I don't think it was a very big minority who thought that way. I and everyone I know were horrified and disgusted by that behavior. Bad loosers and unsporting behaviour. I think the young players in our team are inspirational people who represent England really well.

I concur, In Africa, when there was only 2 teams left, we supported France because of our African brothers playing for their chosen country. We supported France by default (or nostalgia for our Old Colonial Mother : France). I have to say I see where Trevor is coming from with this, but I have to disagree. He is presenting himself in a concilliatory manner saying "Why can't you be both." but that is not the question. In an American framework this way of handeling it makes perfect sense, but not in a French context. This doesn't mean the players can't be celebrated for their Africanness, or their Frenchness, or whatever you want to call them, the issue is that some of these players may genuinely consider themselves fully French, of course others may not, and they are all allowed to do so. The problem with celebrating their Africanness is not that they don't originally come from Africa, but to what point they are considered African and if they agree with it. If a person was born in France, grew up in France, speaks French, knows French culture and references, and doesn't actually care about whereever he may have come from in Africa, while considering himself French, the question is, how can you celebrate his Africanness. If the person explicitly has nothing much to do with the continent, it would be unfair to tell them that they are being celebrated for some form of culture they have no idea about, and have never thought about being a part of, it would be rude to tell them that they are now something or someone that has nothing to do with their identity. France allows dual citizenship, and France specifically encourages people to live their own culture as part of French culture as well, there is plenty of space to celebrate people for their African heritage, but why should someone be celebrated for being African when he is French. Of course there will be players who are African, or who feel deeply connected to Africa and France, the point of the letter isn't to show that they cannot belong to an African culture, the point is that no matter where they have come from, they can think of themselves as French, and their way of life as a French way of life, to show that they have their place in French culture and community if they want to, that they aren't strangers or outsiders. In the first place, a person as I described, who feels he or she has nothing to do with African cultures in the first place, would probably disagree with being called African, so it's not right to pick the middle way, this is not what France has to do, it has to show that no matter where you are from, you can feel as a full part of French life if you so want. You are absolutely free to consider yourself part of another culture and hold a second citizenship, if you want to consider yourself part of two cultures as well, but Trevor missed the point entirely here thinking that the middle ground is the best option. The middle ground isn't good enough for those who don't consider themselves African at all, but French, they should not have to put up with a stigma just because their parents or grandparents are from somewhere else. They should be able to say they are French, regardless of skin colour, ethnicity or other backgrounds, if that is what they want, and if they want to connect with Africa, they are always free to do so, I can guarantee no one is going to stop them doing so in France.

I'd like to add one thing to explain why, even if some good points of criticism are raised by Trevor, it was welcomed as it was. The joke he made, unfortunately, was too similar to an affirmation made by far-right wings in France some time ago (especially with the second immigration period). The context and ideology is of course completely different: Trevor wanted to mention their African heritage when this right-hand wing wanted to underline their idea (that I don't share)that they're were too many strangers in a team which was supposed to be french and other racist bullshit... As the delivery was in almost the same words (with completely opposed ideas) This a remind people of the first occurence and as a result was not received very well...

That's unfirtunate for the lady mentioned. These things happen everywhere and they are unfortunate and sad. but for comedy we should be magnanimous to keep it where it belongs. If we analise too deeply we go end up turning FUN into FIGHT. We dont need that. Yeah there should be caution but almost everything is sensutive. Should we then trim comedy until its no longer comedy? I really do not think so. I think we should stick with the fun side.

The problem is that Mr Trevor knows very little about French culture. 1°) It’s a question of priority. In the US you will talk about an African American person, putting origin before nationality whereas in France we put nationality before origin. It's even present in our language : no one uses the word "Afro French"; we will talk about a Frenchman (first) of Malian origin, of Vietnamese origin, of Senegalese origin...... This is why we feel shocked when you put origin before the nationality. 2°) In his speech which is intended to be humorous, he forgets one important thing: humor is the least shared thing, something that seems funny to you can be shocking to someone from another culture. On the other hand, racism is universal, it is the most shared thing... and everyone can be. 3°) When he speaks of French colonialism he forgets that he carries the nationality of those who erased a culture and suppressed the populations who lived on American soil, "the native Americans"... we are often the colonizer colonized. Gaul was part of the Roman Empire before. Wars and greater population movements these days make these notions obsolete.... 4°) The unconstructive and sarcastic state of mind of Mr Trevor is felt towards the end when he says that these people (the players of the French team and more generally, the French of origin African) are African and "CAN" be French while they ARE French..... the CAN expresses a possibility, it is not a possibility, it is that they ARE French, that's all! 5°) Mr Trevor knows South Africa better than me..... are South Africans of European origin South Africans and therefore Africans or not? 6°) No one in France says that French people of foreign origin must deny their origin, it is once again a bad spirit from Mr Trevor who wants to remain confrontational instead of being positive..... .

I suppose I should try to find the evidence to back this up, but I have a vague recollection of there being some negative sentiment in France when they won their first World Cup in '98 because the racial make-up of that squad was not traditionally French. Basically, it was a criticism of how many Africans there were on that team. Look, I suspect it was something that somebody on the far right in France said, but I suspect there are still some voices in France who are not happy with what the FIFA World Cup successes in '98 and '18 (frankly they should have won '06 too) represent.

Believe me I hate to agree with the French (I'm British) but the ambassador nailed it... The American hyphenate addition is wierd. I see his point and have often wondered why Americans aren't just American! No one is denying heritage, but they were there under the French flag, they participated under the French flag. I can see why the ambassador felt slighted. They chose to be French. They chose to represent the French, it's a slap in the face to the French to then share victory with another country even unofficially or jokingly... To put it simply they left the old culture to adopt a new one, they're standing as a symbol and representative of thier new country and then someone slaps that country in the face. I'm not surprised it warranted a reaction. Separate to the issue of the joke: This idea Americas (and it is ONLY Americans) claim identity and culture from places they have tenuous links too through the most insignificant associations tells me Americans are seeking identity and feel like they don't have one. Being American doesn't mean you didn't originate somewhere, but equally just because your father, grandfather, a DNA blood test says you came from somewhere at some point in time, it doesn't suddenly change your identity or culture. It's absurd and insulting to those that really do have real ties and connections to a country or culture these claimants have no idea about...

15:45 I agree. America is a pure immigrant country and multicultural like no other thus the ancestry lines are many and diverse. Very hypocritical of Trevor Noah there. Nothing in the ambassador's letter denies the african origins or african countries co-nationaliities of SOME French players. Unlike Trevor who said in his original speech (0m38s in the original youtube video) : "I mean look, I get it, I get it. They have to say it's the French team, but look at those guys, huh ! Hey little guys, you don't get that tan by hanging out in the South of France, my friends !" Contraru to what he says here, he denied the french nationality of "African" (quotes because it's not a nationality) players or the french team. Everything else from there is strawman sophism or bullshit, or both. Like complaining about giving the citizenship to Mamoudou Gassama (he has a name, respect it), So for trevor he souldn't have been rewarded for his action ?

So yes in France there are alot of ethnic groups, but we are all French. We do not say “Bretonic-French” “Afro-French” or even “Corsican-French”. We are all just simply French! We dont like to divide our country like the US does. And especially the Algerian and Sub-Saharan population of France have fougth for many years to be considered French. They dont want to be considered “African-French” they want to be considered French and thats that. I myself is what Americans migth want to consider “African-French”. Very interesting. I understand exactly what you’re saying but people identify as more than just Americans. America is unique to where is a country of power but has a small history as far as centuries. We don’t have people (besides the indigenous) that have been from this country for millenniums and so forth. I think it would be easier to call ourselves Americans but each person may have pride to associate themselves as different.

I am of Irish and German descent. I am neither of the two. The culture you and your parents and also, their parents grew up with, makes you something else. That is why the French team members of mostly African descent, are French. And that is why they play better football than the African teams. Their being French and they being brought up in a culture of pride and hard work makes them different than their "brothers" in Africa. Proof that race does not matter, culture does.

I'm German of Eritrean heritage and agree. Played football as well and sports education in Europe is simply more advanced. Europe is the place to be football wise

I don't agree with Noah. I'm Greek, i am white, is there any use to call me also European ? Why is it nessesary for a French who is black to also being notice as African ? Did he asked them all about how they feel ? Maybe some of them would told him that they are French and they don't feel Africans. He says an Irish in the States can celebrate his Irishness without losing his Americaness. Yes, he celebrates to be Irish , not European. Why someone who his ancestors are from Ghana or Nigeria or Mali for instance must feel ok to refer to him just as African? Maybe they would prefer to mention their country and not their continent. I believe that the way to live in peace and to go forward is to stop identify people by their colour. All blacks are not Africans and all Africans aren't even black. The North Africa isn't black and not because of colonialisation but by their own dna . We have the same debate in Greece with the Antetokounmpo brothers. 4 kids born in Greece, been school in Greece, speaking Greek just like any other Greek and our "nazi's " often refers to them as Africans. Not even Nigerians ( and of course with other words that i am not gonna promote by this comment) . Noah doesn't get it or don't want to.

Trevor Howard is very clever and I like his comedy. But I disagree about adding two things to be like like African-American or Caucasian American. If a black man says he's American and the white man says he's american there's a sameness in this respect we are alike. But as soon as you say African-American or Caucasian American there's something different about our interaction. In one case you are not opposed to each in the other case you could be.

The French colonial policy in Africa was that of cultural assimilation, telling the Africans that their culture was inferior so must discard it to embrace French identity and culture, so it is plain to see where the ambassador gets his or her thinking.

When the black people of that french team bashed Trevor, it's time to reflect on himself. He acted like he claimed they were french from african lineage. It's wrong, he said the team wasnt french. Nothing more racist than this take.

I usually like Trevor Noah, but disagree with this video. The ambassador clearly wrote that roots are an individual reality. The players can be of African descent (which is a continent and not a monolith of culture), but they are french people. There are player of German and Italian descent and they dont have to prove they are french. No one calls South Africa's rugby or cricket teams european even though most of those players are white.

Excellent view. The issue here is not that they are NOT French but that they are BLACK French which is exciting for Trevor or any of us from Africa. Like it gives us hope that if all is well we could do amazing things. Can a typical African country win the FIFA men's or women's world cup? obviously NO! So should we not rejoice that we did it another way? Chill meen! Hahaha!

You are completely ignoring his point about how they are perceived based on their "value" to the country. Look into how the french treat African migrants vs. how they treat European or American (white) migrants. Black people have to prove themselves valuable before they are treated humanly, and will only continue to be treated humanly as long as they remain valuable.

I am not going to judge the French ambassador, but i am 💯 totally agree with Trevor. As a human being so many of us are so block in the way how we think. One thing we should learn is our family root, i am borne in Cambodia 🇰🇭 The root of my family is three nationality. My Ancestors is Cambodia Vietnam and Chinese, 200 or 300 year ago we are mixed up. And now my son born in Cambodia his father is French 🤣 but is my boy become World winner! French government not going to said only French 🤣 Need to put all🤣🤣🤣🤣 🇰🇭🇻🇳🇨🇳🇨🇵👍🤣🙏 However it is beautiful to see you both are open mind people, that's is beautiful to the world. Nowadays we need positive to educate our young generation. Respect and appreciation you both 🙏💚 and Trevor 🤣👍💚
