In this 1st video in a series of I introduce the Triad Pair System.
Here is a playlist of ALL triad videos:
• Triad pair Improvisati...
So What is this System?
Simply put, it is super imposing pairs of triads ( major or minor) over a given chord.
When we play triads like these sounded above a base chord we can EVOKE sounds that are not in that base chord.
Just as a master chef adds special ingredients to a dish to produce a
mouth watering flavour we can learn to colour our improvisations in a masterful way superimposing triads.
All instruments.
In the video
00:36 C-/D-
1:50 Eb/F (dorian)
2:20 F/G (melodic)
2.45 D-/Eb (dorian)
3:10 F-/G ( Harmonic)
3:50 C-/Bb Ambiguous
4:20 C-/Bb- (Phyrgian)
4:50 C-/Db (Phyrgian stronger)
5:40 C-/D Satie Sound

Thank you so much for these extremely lucid explanations and demonstrations of the use of triad pairs. The freedom expressed in your sax playing was very instructive. I think the final pair appears to cover a lydian diminshed scale ( a lydian with a minor third). Great lesson!!!

Hi, with other videos I've watched on triad pairs people take the two notes above an avoid note, as the roots for their pairs. I see you are taking triads with notes out side of the scale notes. Is their any logic to this other than them not having any shared notes?

Great video! Thought I would share that the Cm + D (Satie) triad pair could come from the Dorian #4 (fourth mode from the G Harmonic minor scale) or the Melodic Minor #4 (fourth mode of the G Harmonic Major scale)

Wish you would do a video on your process of discovering the triad pairs you use. Are you going thru the chromatic list of triads and listening to the sound. I notice most are a whole step apart do you use other intervals as well. Like to know more about your discovery process.

Do you have any system for selecting triad pairs over a chord?
@AlexTuble
@AlexTuble 6 лет назад
I think it's just based on what extensions of the chord you want to emphasize. It depends on how many chord tones you want to play and how many "outside" notes you want to play. Also, the system he offers is a way of relating the sounds of the triads to emotions, allusions etc.
@ohmyapple
@ohmyapple 5 лет назад
Jan Larsen gave a method in his triads pair lesson. Based on "avoid note" : you got a chord and you take off one note of the appropriate scale. For exemple on a Dm7 where, IN THIS CONTEXT Dorian scale is appropriate, you can chose to not play the 4th note ans so you'll get D E F A B C which is Dm + Am.

Theory help please. I thought triad meant 3 notes. How does one count the notes in your examples. Some note groupings have more than three notes? And sometimes it sounds like you are playing four notes when there are only three?

3:30 he says this is "redolent" of harmonic minor. I guess he is saying you can't tell if it is harmonic minor, since he is not playing the full scale?

For your G major triads that you use for your melodic minor sound and harmonic minor sound, is there a reason you don’t use G augmented triads to give you the minor 3rd? Great video btw!

The second pair demonstrated D- + Eb (at 2:48) does not appear in your original table (at 1:46). Why? An approach for guitarists who wished to follow this might be to play the triad inversions vertically using only strings 4, 3, 2. Dig?

@DominicAirola
@DominicAirola 5 лет назад
The Satie one is basically Dorian #4, a mode of the harmonic minor.
@JazzDuets
@JazzDuets 5 лет назад
sorry, I cannot concur with this. I think the very thing that makes this scale so special is that it has just 6 notes. It is like less is more. Satie of course was a master of this. Melodically as well not having the 7th means the scale has 2 minor 3rd intervals which gives it such a pungent sound flavour.
@DominicAirola
@DominicAirola 5 лет назад
Jazz Duets Fair enough. I just thought how you compared other combinations of 2 triads to 7 note modes, if this pair was compared to any 7 note mode it would probably be Dorian #4. Of course in every example, even the ones that you compared to regular modes, leaving 1 note out is a distinctive characteristic.

6:05 -- You are awesome and I love your tutorials but you really slipped on this one with a gross mistake. Why "not found in common basic scales/exotic"? this is classic G harmonic minor, Cm is the 4th natural degree and D is a D7. Try playing G4-C5-Eb5-F#4-D5-A5(-Bb5-G4) (numbers indicating the octave) and it should sound like a proper Bach cadence.
