You are giving me so much inspiration. I'm a non traditional student freshman in college I'm 45 and have no previous degree other than my high school diploma. I'm double majoring in physics and computer science. I want to go into a PhD program directly after undergrad. Your videos help to give me extra encouragement to move forward. Thanks for your videos.

I'm right there with you, I just finished my BA in History and Philosophy last year at 47 and started my MA this year. I'm also hoping to go on to a PhD! For me, once I got past the awkwardness of being surrounded by people so much younger than me, I found the whole experience incredibly rewarding. Good luck!

My favourite thing about PhDs is when people think they know about It without realising the day to day realities of a PhD Student.

Seriously. The comments about he reading and writing process from non academics, and people who haven't done research are astounding and often disheartening. I keep reminding myself "it's just Dunning-Kruger fallacy."

Right now I'm physically reading An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States and also listening to Becoming by Michelle Obama via audiobook. Oh, and I'm studying for the LSAT. Trying to make a career change from teacher to attorney. We'll see how that goes.

I love watching these diss diaries because I’m in the same boat. The ups and downs are so real. One moment you feel like you just wrote and researched and did so much and the next you feel like you have no idea what you’re talking about lol I just finished A Discovery of Witches and can’t wait to read book too-I’m obsessed!!

I started following recently in the past 2 years . I graduated with a bachelors in history and wanted more than anything to prove people wrong and have a career in academics. Sadly, it just wasn’t in the cards. And with life, my love for history hasn’t changed but it’s taken a back seat. Stumbling across your Instagram one day and following your RU-vid I find myself, not only living vicariously through you as you live my dream, but that I can, on my own, study history because it makes me happy. I’ve picked up my first historiography in almost 10 years and I take that 400 page beauty with me everywhere. Your channel has reignited my love of academia even though I am not in a spot to have it be my career. And I listen to your videos at work for personal motivation. Just don’t tell my boss LOL

Thank you for taking us along on your journey, Kaelyn. I am a biomedical researcher; watching your videos is very motivating on those rare days when I am able to carve out time to focus on writing, be it grant proposals or papers. Very excited about those archive visits, please bring us along.

It's absolutely amazing to see how happy and inspired you are! Especially after watching your last video. It really inspired me to think about what it is I want out of my MA in History, and why I'm doing this.

Working on work work, and applying to a Folklore program while watching this one. I've watched your videos in my master's, now I will when I am (hopefully) headed back! Also, This was so real, I LOVE writing but I am also plagued by the sense of not knowing what I am doing pretty much every time I try to write anything.

Wonderful vlog! It's been so wonderful to see your work through your dissertation process. I just recently got accepted into grad school for a masters in History so I've been working on adjusting my routines and studying styles. So seeing yours through this video and past ones definitely helps! I'm currently reading The Gatekeepers: How the White House Chiefs of Staff Define Every Presidency by Chris Whipple. It's really fascinating to read about a political position that many of us know nothing about.

I just sent my advisor what should be the penultimate draft of my diss, ideally with only very minor changes left!! V tired but trying to focus on being proud of myself. I enjoy your videos because it's interesting to see the similarities and differences in your/other people's experiences with their PhDs. And I'm considering a career path post-degree that might take me to London eventually, so I enjoy seeing glimpses of the city in your vlogs. I hope your writing has been going well since you filmed this!

I love watching your videos. I mainly watch while working as that's when timing works out. But I also love seeing the places you go. I hope to get to London one of these days. And I agree on the All Souls books - I devoured them when I found them. Didn't like the show as much, but they're never as good as the books anyway. :)

I found “A Discovery of Witches” on a shelf in my local library about 10 years ago. I’ve since read the trilogy 3 times and it never gets old. I hope you get to meet Deborah Harkness and share it all with us afterwards. I’m currently reading “Babel”, and “Remarkably Bright Creatures”.

Your videos are truly inspiring and gives me inspiration. The writing process is different for everybody, it is not the same for everybody. I sometime use concept mapping and/or writing my thoughts down on a piece of paper or on Google Docs before writing the paper or just head straight to writing a draft of the paper, email or meet with the professor to discuss the draft before submitting the paper. However, sometimes I make small tweak to my writing process that I kind of notice. I am currently reading The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang. I read this book awhile ago back in Spring 2021 but felt like it was time to reread it since I purchased the other two books of this book series.

I just finished reading Tessa Murphy’s “The Creole Archipelago: Race and Borders in the Colonial Caribbean” for my Atlantic class and highly recommend it! There’s a lot I learned about imperialism’s effect on the Leeward Islands/Lesser Antilles. Might find some useful leads in the notes there!

Your ideas about matrilineal decent also reminds me of a few quirks from Ancient Roman slave law. I don't know if that is outside your scope or not. I currently have way too many books I'm trying to read at the same time. I over did it putting books on hold through Libby. Starter Villan by John Scalzi Into the Broken Lands by Tanya Huff Glass and Steele Series by CJ Archer The Glass Library series by CJ Archer (sequel series to above) Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher

This week is the first week of my Masters in Project Management. My laziness and anxiety been getting to me. The writing scares me. Watching you helps me feel I'm not alone as you have 1 million things going on at the same time you are writing your dissertation. Your videos are peaceful and give great insight to someone who isn't knowledgeable of the PhD process. Idk if I would want to pursue one or not

Hi Kaelyn! Thank you so much for normalizing imposter syndrome or not knowing the next steps ahead of time. I appreciate it! Also, I love buying physical copies of books and supporting authors and my local book sellers - but I never know what to do with the books once I'm done. What do you do with your physical fiction books once you are done reading them?

I'm working on something that is confusing the hell out of everyone around me 😂I'm pursuing the second half of my BA (community college grad with an Associate's) but decided to switch my major from a Social Science to Humanities (gasp) as I'm deep diving into my life-long fascination with mythology and folklore, but from a literary and creative writing focus instead of the Anthropology focus I had originally. BUT - I'm playing with the idea of a Liberal Arts MA that will allow more freedom to bring together elements of Psychology, Anthropology, History, Philosophy, and English in my studies and further workings. Will see how burnt out I am after my last academic year next fall (doing this all at age 35-36).
