Fun fact, Triassic ichthyosaurs hold the record for the fastest conquest of the sea by a land vertebrate. It took only 5 million years for ichthyosaurs to go from mostly-terrestrial to giant fish-eating predators larger that humpback whales, specifically the Cymbospondylus youngorum; for comparison, humans took 7 to 10 million years to evolve from tree-dwelling apes! Later Triassic ichthyosaurs such as the Shonisaurus (the blimp-shaped giant reptile in the video) would get even bigger. For comparison, pliosaurs (the four-flippered reptiles also seen in the video) only evolved in the Middle Jurassic, their group mostly being represented by nothosaurs (the semiaquatic reptiles at the start) at this time, and got up to about 10 tons for the largest pliosaurs. The famous giant mosasaurs of the Cretaceous would only reach 15 tons or so. As for whales? It took them a good 20 million years to evolve the Basilosaurus. a 15-ton flesh-eating whale that chewed up smaller marine mammals for breakfast, and a good while longer before they surpassed the ichthyosaurs with the evolution of giant sperm and baleen whales. So well done, ichthyosaurs!

@DawnTyrantEo
@DawnTyrantEo 2 года назад
@@Mandicke There's some old estimates that get up to 100 tons, but those are mostly based on fragmentary remains that made incorrect assumptions about what the whole skeleton was like. Modern estimates get up to about 17 tons at most, for a particularly large, chonky pliosaur called Sachicasaurus, though those are unreferenced but reasonably-reliable figures from a dinosaur Discord channel.

I agree! I'm very interested in palaeonthology. Particiular in dinosaurs. Got interested when I was about 8 or 9 think. I just turned 47. (Maybe a dinosaur myself). The triassic has in many years facinated me. I don't know why. Perhaps becauce it was like stated above here,dinosaurs were rare. They were just in their evolutoinary ladder. They lived in a world dominated by other large non dinosaur reptiles. And mammals of course. They almost arose at the same times as early dinosaurs. Yet you could still track them from the previous era. The permian. But still. How amazing wouldn't it have been to actually go back in time,and experience the triassic? When I see this wonderful video, i can't stop thinking, imagine how i "really" was ..

Correction: ichthyosaurs, even the largest ones didn't suprass the size of blue whale. Shonisaurus popularis was about 15 meters long Shonisaurus sikanniensis was about 21 meters long Lilstock ichthyosaurs (known from partial lower jaw) was estimated to be around 24-26 meters which is comparable to medium sized adult blue whale and the largest of fin whales but still smaller than the largest specimens of blue whale. For comparison the largest confirmed specimen of blue whale was a female with length of 29,9 meters while hydrodynamic models suggest that blue whales could attain maximum length of 33 meters, because of metabolic and energy constraints the larges sizes are unlikely.

I browsed through your channel and saw many great animation short stories, most of them both compelling and as scientifically accurate as possible. I love paleontology and I truly enjoyed your high level of detail rendering on those animals (your Carnotaurus, man...) Of course, I could argue about some behavioral details, the specifics of the attack, but I understand: you also have a story to tell. So I'm perfectly fine with the liberties you took here and there, in my opinion this is close to a "Prehistoric Planet" level in terms of animation and story-telling. All you need is maybe some voice-over if you do something longer. You should think about kidnaping David Attenborough.

There was more plants animals , people lived longer. There was no depression. No sickness. Even now they have more air theropy. And it was all in Blu-ray, it was perfect season all year long.

Someone name every species in the video, that'll make my day. This animation is pure goal, it also inspires me even more to get a paludarium with a special setting matching the ancient past. I love at how even though it's CGI, it still looks so realistic and as if they are really special effects. Haven't seen such great CGI animation like this since Smaug from The Hobbit. This is so beautiful that I feel like crying, it reminds me of a documentary/film I saw as a kid many years ago in I think 2006. Also, I didn't even know that there were pliosaurs alive during the Triassic, I've definitely gotta do more research because I really love pliosaurs they are my personal favorite marine reptiles, Liopleurodon in particular is my personal favorite prehistoric marine animal. I'd like to imagine the two large Sachicasaurus in the video to be a monogamous pair that mate for life. I don't that's just my personal take on it.
