This video exemplifies why such cross-cultural reaction videos are an important bridge. Here two people with different culture, language and traditions respond with complete human empathy and can identify completely with the feelings and experience that are expressed in this song. If this doesn't help all of us understand each other, that we are all the same inside, only different in a few exterior trappings, then I don't what can.

He does, song is 100% about reflecting on the regrets of your life and the things you did that you knew would end up hurting you or the people around you but you did them anyway and looking back and living in the regret of those things. This is the life of a masochist, someone that can't help but do things that hurt themselves and almost subconciously do them intentionally because all they know is living in the shit pile of regret and self hate they have. Johnny’s wife June Carter Cash was in the video with him. She died 3 months (May 2003) after filming the video. She was the love of his life. Johnny followed her only 4 months later in September 2003. His cause of death is listed as complications from diabetes, but I truly believe he died of a broken heart.

@dilbertjunkmail
@dilbertjunkmail 10 месяцев назад
@@cliffordbowman6777 I'd look in the mirror before assigning arrogance too quickly. I've lost my family twice and my journeys not over. Johnny's life was filled with joy and misery, and like most of us from his own action. Knowing the richness of Johnny's life and some of the depths of his pain, I wouldn't trade my own miseries to have had his life. Upon reflection, I can admire his accomplishments, but understand his journeys pain after my own disappointments. Even the author of this song appreciated the feeling and expression Johnny put into this song. Few can truly understand the depths of pain until they've lived it. The comforts of our lives bounty is nothing without having those we loved around us to enjoy it also. In this hardened world, people we loved walk away from our lives too easily or are taken away by their death. Our only choice is to start over.

Cash came from abject poverty. He started picking cotton with his family at five. At 8 or 9 his brother died in a really nasty work accident, for which he felt guilty to his death. He was an addict for much of his life, and spent many a night in prison. He knew hard times. I am a Man's Man, I have a past in the military and as a carpenter, I like to fight with swords, hunting, fishing. When I listen to this song tears roll down my cheeks uncontrolledly. It hits and expresses all the pain inside that we keep under control otherwise to not fall apart. The older man here gets it. He gets it. The song was written by Trent reznor and performed by his band Nine Inch nails, and he was initially reluctant to let Cash do a cover. When he heard it, he said, "This is your song now". Cash's daughter heard it (or was present, I am not sure), she said, "It sounds like you are saying goodbye" Cash replied; "Maybe I am", a few months later his wife passed (she is the woman in the video), and after that he himself died. It was a goodbye.

These types of reaction videos are so underrated. It shows how much one can learn from other cultures, particularly when they are discussing culturally significant things from one's own part of the world. Johnny Cash lived a life that many people know. He struggled with addiction at points, which strained many of his relationships and drove people away from him. His songs have that familiar bravado because he sings from the heart about his experiences, rather than a fantastic spectacle. Like many idols of older generations, he struggled. He struggled desperately. And his talent saw him through. So in his late life, he spent a significant amount of time trying to repent and repair his relationships.

I’m sure when Trent Reznor wrote these lyrics in his 20’s about his heroin addiction he never in his wildest dreams though that decades later a Jonny Cash cover of it would have a tribal elder emotionally reflect on the fragility of life. Music is so powerful.

At 55 I agree with the old guy so much. What we thought was important means nothing. All the treasures we accumulated get tosssed into a dumpster at the end. The memories are what remain. My ex wife died 14th Febuary and the kids wouldn't show up when she lay dying in the hospital. I showed up and stayed with her for 5 weeks while she suffered. Love is the only thing that matters in the end.

Its a song about regrets, realizing there is no redemption. We do things that others say, "you have to forgive yourself" But we know in our hearts, for our actions, sometimes there is no forgiveness. Hence, "Full of broken thoughts that I cannot repair." Time passes in everything but our thoughts. We are cursed to take those thoughts with us to our grave. Believer or not, It makes you fear for your soul.

Most respect goes to Trent Reznor. The actual creator of this song. This is Johnny Cash covering that song.

I'm not to make it all about me, but this reminds me of hitchhiking through the black forest in Czech Republic and a father and son had never heard Johnny Cash and I had one cassette tape with me so there's to listen to some music and we played it and I'm. The real number for it. ❤❤❤❤ #travellust

I have to tell this part as the Johnny Cash personal family photographer told me about this music video( and I have the photo proofs of June and Johnny's wedding) that June was in the process of dying while this video was being recorded and she came.down the stairs totally unprompted and stood on the landing overlooking Johnny. This is the moment you see in the video. June made Johnny promise on their love that he would not stop making music when she died and that he could only stop when he died. I also have the footage from Johnny's last public performance. June died shortly after this video was recorded and Johnny true to his word preformed until his last day. I was asked by the family photographer and the Cash family to never let all the personal photos I have be sold or published. Some of us care so deeply about June and Johnny that money means nothing. Their music is part of our soul and we will gladly guard their memories.

It is worth noting that Johnny Cash's wife passed away a month or 2 after this music video was recorded and Johnny passed as well a handful of months after her.

This was a cover of a Nine Inch Nails song and the way he sang it made it take on a different meaning than the original. It was moving to the point that Trent Reznor said it's his song now.

The older man gets it more than any younger man could. Only a person nearing the end of their life could ever understand exactly how your mind shifts when you statt to understand that death is not far away. Just a blink away. It a humbling, scary and mellowing experience. Its made me kinder and more grateful for the little things. However, death can hold on bc im not ready yet. Ill fight for every bit of life i can before my time is up. I realize this wasnt written by Johnny Cash. Im referring to the emotion he put into it at the end of his life that a younger man wouldnt necessarily be able to replicate.
