So, can any of you guys guess who I was talking about at the end of this video? P.S. I know that the man on guitars might not be Roger Waters, I listen to their audios most of the time so I'm really unaware how they have changed over the years. My sincere apologies 🙏

David joined as a second guitarist while Syd was still in the band. Syd didn't leave the band. The band left Syd. Due to Syd becoming more erratic and unreliable, the band decided not to bother collecting Syd on the way to a gig as they usually did. They felt guilty ever since, especially Roger (the Bass guitarist) who had become close friends with Syd. The video you used is from years after Pink Floyd had also parted company with Roger Waters, so Roger is not in this video. A few years later Roger did perform the song with Pink Floyd at the Live 8 concert in 2005.

When I was in 10th grade (14-15 years old) I knew a girl named Robin who introduced me to this song. I had a crush on her, but she was my friend's girlfriend. They had a really terrible fight one time, and she took her own life afterwards. Years later, I learned how to play this song, but I can't play it without shedding tears for her and the life she should have had.

I was 16, he was 21. 46 years later he died. We met in 1972. When I hear this song I have to turn it off. The pain is too intense. Not that it was our song or anything, ( in fact his fav was Angie from the Stones. And Beast of Burden, again the Stones). But the lyrics kill me. We were two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year, and I truly wish he was here. I'm in tears just writing this. I will do my best to finish the video. Sorry for dumping guys... This is such a beautiful song that it breaks my heart to not be able to listen to it. I'm out. Love you guys.

If you were to do more Pink Floyd, I would suggest “The Great Gig in the Sky” (studio version). It is mainly a female vocalist (Clare Torry) hired by the band who sings without using words. Through just the powerful feelings she conveys with her voice, the stages of dying can be understood. Denial, Acceptance, and the Final moments basically. A beautiful song, especially when you understand it’s meaning before you listen to it!

"Did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts" As I get older, that lyric comes back to me often. Yes, they did get me to trade my heroes for ghosts. So many that I grew up on and with are now gone, more every day it seems. I know life is a zero sum game, but it never, ever gets any easier. I just get number to it, I think. You did a good job explaining the main topics in the song. It is not always easy, as there are differences in culture and interpreting meaning as well as emotion. To these gentlemen, sadness needs more loud voices and chest beating, while in some Western cultures, immense sadness is expressed very subtly. Also, it was about the feelings of a man toward a fellow man, so less emotion might be expected.

Reading these comments and remembering various PF lyrics in other albums, I'm thinking about that one reference to quiet desperation being the English way in "Breathe." Quiet desperation is just what I hear when I listen to Gilmour sing "Wish You Were Here." He's sad in his remembering his friend, but he's reserved in his emotions.
@Angela-jc8bk
@Angela-jc8bk Год назад
One thing I would have said to clarify is that this song is about when the pain of losing someone is not fresh and immediate. It is pain that one has learnt to live with, the quiet grief that stays with you always. That you feel when you are unexpectedly reminded of the person by sight, scent, or sound.
@subg8858

Yeah I don’t think that’s it. This is in fact very coldly performed music emotionally. They have appreciated more subtle music than this
@Angela-jc8bk
@Angela-jc8bk Год назад

The song is expressing so much beauty too - like "this is so beautiful, and I wish you could be here to see it and be part of it" so there are layers of emotion expressed. It's bittersweet. A very different tone than hurt, since one is about a man destitute and this is about a man who has gained everything but misses his friend. ❤

Comparing Cash and Pink Floyd is interesting. While both songs are connected to addiction and loss they are both from two very opposite perspectives. While David Gilmour was sharing his feelings of losing a friend many years ago Johnny Cash was sharing his feelings of regret for those he had personally harmed including himself. Both have been on my list of top 50 for years, including NINs version of hurt. It really pained me for Parvarti to miss an introduction to Pink Floyd, I hope you will be able to right that wrong. Wish You Were Here has always reminded me how all of us have had to make choices alone and as a society and many of those choices we may never get to change or make again. Connected more than ever, Peace/JT

Amazing song. For years it was used to test the performances of sound systems and speakers - the studio version had the highest quality and range between bass and twitters... Still to this day, one of the most amazing and still used for calibration. Try this at home - find a good version - then when you play it, try to arrange your settings so you can hear the very beginning of the 1st guitar arrangement without having bass and twitters getting crushed later. It is extremely hard because this is one of the softest and sensitive start. If you manage this, congratulations, your system is on point.

now it's time for "The Great Gig In The Sky". there are very little lyrics to translate, but it is still (in my own personal opinion) one of the most emotionally powerful songs ever made.

This is one of my favorite Pink Floyd songs, and a quick story. My husband and I were set up on a blind date by a mutual friend. I had this song on my answer tone when people would call me on my cell phone anyway he called me to set up our first date and left me a message when I called him back. This was his answer tones so basically we had the same answer tone I was very impressed with that. 15 years later here we are with our beautiful daughter.

@TRYBALS you have a beautiful channel. I am inspired by it because you show that no matter the cultural divide, we can learn things from one another and find common ground through emotions that we all experience no matter where we are from or the languages we speak. I enjoy listening to the thoughts and interpretations of your guests and the honest effort they put in to finding connections with their own life experiences, and the way they are open to the new experiences. 💗

Very interesting reactions! For me this song will always be associated with the funeral of my dad's cousin who was also my teacher when I was a child, and I'm a rather quiet griever as well... I'm screaming inside, but not on the outside... Looking forward to the other song you mentioned! On that note - I'd be very interested to see reactions to Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart". She's an amazingly talented singer with a unique voice and the style of the song, Wagnerian Rock, is also one of a kind.

An amazing song and a huge part of music history. The studio version had one of the highest quality of recording ever. It was the absolute best for more than a decade and was used by professional for performance benchmark for sound systems and speakers. Try this at home: find a good studio version. Try settings that allows you to hear the very first guitar chords and see if your sound system can perform them while being able to play the rest of the song without hurting the speakers. The start of the song is one of the most gentle ever recorded and it is a great technical performance. If you manage to bring it out, congratulations : you performed a calibration and your sound system is on point.

Great song choice! Really hard to interpret accurately as pink floyd use so much metaphor and phrases with two or more meanings (and each meaning matters). This song is particularly dense with these, so you've done really well. 😊

The next songs from Pink Floyd should be from Dark Side of the Moon. That album is so intense and chilling. Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful rock albums ever written. The Wall is fun, but Dark Side is where it's at. I don't know that Syd's problem was addiction, so much as latent mental health issues that the drugs made worse. But the two can look the same, and sometimes it's both

Whenever I had heard this song it was not only grief but also of longing for a loved one that was lost/gone. The best way I can describe it is like a longing from the heart but it isn’t screamed out into the world, but more of a whisper in the heart. Not sure if that totally made sense, but that is how I always interpreted it.

They liked Johnny Cash so much you should do "The man in Black". Dolly Parton is also a great story teller song writer. For her I would recommend "Coat of Many Colars". I was VERY happy to see the reaction to "Zombie" by the Cranberries, one of my most desired! I sometimes like to think you did it just for me! :)

The difference in tone was Johnny Cash was expressing sorrow, a painful sorrow, while Pink Floyd was more of a melancholy, like they had given in to what happened and accepted it. That's how it makes me feel, anyway. Also, I don't think I have ever heard a singer who was able to wring emotions, either sorrow or joy, out of me like Johnny Cash. He wasn't particularly talented as a singer, guitarist, or song writer, but he seemed to pour his soul into every performance. That made him one of the greats.

I am so glad I found these videos today.. In a world that promotes fear of people who don't think the same or worship the same or look the same, this is a reminder that the things that make us the same far outweigh the things that make us differnt! And that the situations we face are the same no matter where in this world we are! I have watched several of your videos so far and will likely like most of them! Thank you for creating content that promotes understanding and gives me hope for a future where we all can just be ourselves and be accepted! Many blessings from Oklahoma USA
