I was lucky enough to see Scott before he was a known guitar player. Saw him in Palmdale,ca. With a top 40 band. He would play a solo with his echoplex using the whole 3 min to record his solo then hit play and walk off stage to get a drink while his echoplex was playing with his band. Also he played top40 solos like no one else. As I am a sax player I got to jam with him at his home and some gigs , I will always remember how he sounded playing over some jazz standards. A genius on the guita
yeah, i was at the infamous "blizzard show" at toad's place. Defied certain death driving sideways to get there. maybe 14 fusion nerds comprising the total crowd, all jammed toward the front of the stage like a science class. This was pre-"illicit" and Sco set up the tune announcing his girlfriend was seen with kenny g, so it was time for him to 'sell out'. They played the whole phony smooth jazz intro until finally turning up to 11, screaming 'Psyche!' and launching into this thunderous epic.
I remember this concert in Amsterdam. Unforgettable. Kirk during his solo which was so intense just kept going and going while almost falling of his stool. Didn’t miss a beat! Super band. I can’t imagine a better fusion team ever again.
Imagine walking into a tiny club with a few friends and all of a sudden you hear THIS coming from a small stage, jammed into the far end of a narrow room. THAT was exactly how and when I first heard Tribal Tech in the early 90's.
@@petechilds788 It was a club in Albany, NY. I never missed them coming through town after that and would end up hanging out with both Scotts and Gary regularly before shows. They're a lot of fun :)
Absolutely. I started meeting the guys regularly every following year afterward. It was really just a matter of showing up a little early for a few beers and while they were never swarmed by fans, they were always willing and quite fun to talk with. On top of all of this talent, they're just awesome people. Maybe there's hope for us after all...
One of the greatest; period. There are too many incredible bands (Like Holdsworth, Mahavishnu, etc) for your "greatest ever" to mean anything. But this band definitely belongs in that esteemed company.
Kirk's a madman. Not underrated at all. Those who know, just fucking know he's the shit. I miss the smooth/jazz cheesy intro from the studio album. To be in a band where everyone is banging hard must be pure bliss.
Kirk is the unsung hero of TT! Probably my favorite drummer of all times! Love the energy! He could replace 'animal' from the Muppet Show( I believe Americans call it Sesame Streat)
This is awesome. Scott learned a lot from playing in the Elektric Band and you can see it here. The album drum solo was so cool I had to look it up live.
I've got a bootleg of Tribal Tech with Virgil Donati on drums. He's an amazing drummer and really fit the band aswell. it was like a whole other animal
Kirk Covington is by far one of the most underrated players of all time . This drum solo is so off the cuff yet so pin point accurate it's almost like the drums fuel his energy and talent the harder he plays the more intense and dirty he gets . Just an insane performance all together by every player .
That's exactly what happened to me a few years ago, I had just met Scott the night before after a rehearsal in MD one night, they were playing in DC the next night . these guys blew me completely away!
Like UZEB, there are a couple of things that set Tribal Tech above and apart: 1) they are a BAND, and 2) great, seriously great, writing. And of course, the brilliant playing.
Well I've seen all the "greats" and as much as Holdsworth and Henderson take it to town live, some of the best for all out blowing I've seen have been Frank Gambale's band and believe it or not, Robben Ford with the Yellowjackets backing him with Virgil Donati on drums back in the day! Absolutely stunning and likely never to be repeated.
As you can see the drummer is making a face as if he is in complete agony/pain.This symptom occurs when the music reaches the painfullygoodmasterwizardry level.
