What? Most kitchen knives have a belly too. It's the same technique, you just pull the angle away to match the angle of the belly. It's common sense brother, you need to have the edge against the stone at a set angle. If you can't do it with full swipes yet, break the blade up into zones. Just be a bit more careful about counting passes if you do that.

I'll say this if you're struggling with sharpening freehand get that 140 Atoma, simply was a game changer for me. 140, 325dmt, 600dmt, strop 1m Gunny Juice and Whew! 😊

This is by far the best sharpening tip ive ever ran into and ive been studying sharpening and watching videos for years. I got rid of my wicked edge and went freehand 100%. This way of holding the same angle gave me that extra confidence and control to take my freehand edges up a few notches. Genius idea, yet so simple!! Thanks!!

Dang, that's so simple and beautiful it's truly genius! Does this work for stropping too?🤔 I always struggle with following curved parts of blades, this video makes me want to give freehanding another honest try

It can but the problem is you need a Strop that will stay in place and the angle is already on the edge so you have to match it, my recommendations for Stropping is just hold the edge angle lower when Strop nothing bad can happen from that so you can slowly work your way up but if you hold the angle to high that's when it will be messed up, hopefully that made sense

Diamond stones are not good for hard steels, it puts small chips in the blade

@@grovesy333 I've sharpen knives all my life, and I know diamond stones ruins knives with steel, like d2 and s30v, etc. He wasn't using a knife with that hard of a steel, so you're wrong

Exact, très bonne méthode. Moi j’utilise mon index aussi quand je plaque lame sur la Pierre est mon pouce. Ou le dos de lame est à moitié.après avec l’expérience. Tu entends quand l’angle il change un peu le bruit sur la pierre est différent

Seems very imprecise. I want it perfect. I was thinking more like a ramp with bearings on the bottom that you can just rest the knife on and slide it back and forth.

I just try shaving the stone. I get the best edge by feel. As if I'm trying to cut a thin slice.

Try 3M Trizact Performance Sandpaper, 03064, 3-2/3 in x 9 in, 3000 grit .... use very light strokes... just the weight of the blade pressure... only draw away from the edge not into it...you'll be amazed....

Not if you can hold the angle, you don't have to do the finger trick or just use it as a starting point, you can also get an angle finder to set on the stone

Good idea but it will only work with certain blade profiles... I will be using this but I will use the blade to find where to mark my fingers.

Hey Jerad, I'm trying to learn how to freehand sharpen and I'm wondering how much pressure i should be using on my Atoma 140 and 400 stones?

just a little, you want a bit of pressure when sharpening no pressure when removing the burr. as long as you can hold the angle when sharpening you are fine regardless if pressure is more or less, so add a bit but not to much that you cant maintain angle

So many different vids on this, most say to drag the knife towards you blade edge away from you and not pushing the sharp edge into the stone.

Don’t get it? How does that help you maintain the factory angle? That only helps hand position, but not the tilt of the blade.

Yes I can but the point is that you want to put the exact same spot on the exact same spot otherwise if your off by a few thousands the angle is different and you will be convexing. I have no issues doing it without this is something I used to learn with so I teach it to others

I reckon Sharpening Sticks are foolproof and easier. . Just keep the blade vertical and stroke down. Alternatively, one could make up an angled jig for your stone and stroke as ol mate is showing. Vertical is easy to maintain.

well some stones require it and some require other like oil , or soapy water, and some you can use dry

Only problem I’d see with his method is the different angles each edge has, however if you just rebevel your knives this’ll work perfectly fine.

This was a 300 grit, you always want to start with a coarse for your first stone in most cases
