Trickle Charge Solar Panel and Leisure Battery info

I'm getting some very techi comments about the solar panel I've chosen. Quite simply, this little unit/solar panel just MAINTAINS the charge ALREADY in the battery. That's what it says on the box. If your battery is dead, it's NOT powerful enough to re-charge it. I knew this when I bought it. My van can be in storage for long periods, so I felt this solar panel was ideal as it should simply keep the battery level MAINTAINED at the level it is when I park the van up. I am looking at everyones advice, which is very helpful and if I feel the need to get something more substantial then I will follow some of this advice. I just believe in keeping things simple... and this little unit is as simple as it gets. Thanks for following my little channel, your comments, advice and help are always appreciated 🤗

Hi Teresa. You are slowly getting there with the camper electrics. That trickle charge solar panel will hopefully keep your starter battery topped up in storage, well done. The platinum range of batteries are 'proper' deep cycle leisure batteries and should last you years. I'm a bit perplexed by the garage saying your old leisure battery was discharging your starting battery, your split charger (you do have a split charge relay, don't you?) should disconnect the batteries from each other when the engine isn't running. Hi Teresa. Are you sure that the small battery is the Leisure battery? I noticed the Numax label on the big battery. Numax make leisure batteries. I think you need to double check which battery is your Leisure battery. If the smaller battery IS the Leisure battery you could replace the large batter with your new battery and swap over the battery connectors. Small battery for car electrics and large battery=Leisure battery. To prevent your leisure battery draining the engine battery you need to install a split-charge relay. You can buy a "CarGO" split charge relay for less than £30 on eBay, and would only take a few minutes for your garage to fit. Worth noting that Leisure batteries are described as 'deep cycle' because the voltage can drop without damaging the battery, whereas a car battery is not deep cycle and can be irreparably damage by allowing the battery to go flat for length of time.

No I guess 30 watts plus is needed, ideal 100 Watts to replace energy if you are not on grid for a few days.

Obviously you have put a new battery on. Just for another time though. With leisure batteries, there are standard and AGM ones. Let's say it's an 100 amp one. For standard you can safely use 50%, so 50 amps and AGM is 80%, so 80 amps. This is the maximum level you should take the battery down to before you charge. Any lower and you can damage your battery.

It is not recommended to put a solar panel behind glass, such as a windscreen, the glass magnifies the sun making it very hot. Be careful

Very informative. Do you camp on your own? I really want to get a van and go it alone but not sure if I have the confidence.
