[Team Introduction]
Kyomachi/Shinkyobashi "Ebisu Shibaten Ren" is a Yosakoi team based in the Kyomachi and Shinkyobashi shopping streets in Kochi City. The team has participated continuously in the Yosakoi Festival since its inception. The team name "Ebisu" originates from the deity of prosperity, "Ebisu-sama," while "Shibaten" refers to a kappa-like yokai (spirit) from Kochi folklore. This name embodies the region's traditions and the wish for thriving business.
The team is known for its costumes, which attract attention with a new design each year. These costumes feature intricate designs and special tricks, such as colors that appear different from the front and back. In 2003, the team gained attention for a performance that utilized sleeves in a way that influenced the Yosakoi style.
The theme for 2024 is "Everyone Shine!" In celebration of the Olympic year, the costumes incorporate the tricolor of France and the Eiffel Tower, symbols of Paris. The large sleeves feature double measures (masu) and the marks of "Ebisu" and "Shibaten," symbolizing the wish for prosperity. The float (chosa) is also adorned with tricolor colors.
[Yosakoi Festival]
The Yosakoi Festival is a lively event held annually from August 9th to 12th in Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture. It began in 1954 with the aim of revitalizing the local economy and boosting the spirits of the citizens.
During the festival, around 190 teams and 20,000 dancers participate, performing energetic dances with naruko (wooden clappers). Each team competes with unique costumes, music, and choreography, performing at 17 different stages and venues across Kochi City. The festival kicks off with an eve event on August 9th, followed by the national competition and final night festivities on August 12th, enveloping the entire city in a festive atmosphere.
The popularity of the Yosakoi Festival has spread across Japan, leading to the creation of similar events like the "YOSAKOI Soran Festival" in various regions. Additionally, Yosakoi festivals are held overseas in countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, France, South Korea, and Taiwan, where Japanese traditional culture merges with local cultures to create unique Yosakoi styles.
