I sure could use some help with a new bike after getting hit by an uninsured teenager and my insurance come to find out had lapsed as well! So I'm without any transportation! Please pick me for a give away bike!✌️✌️
There's a fix for the MT07 forks. The spacer is to long and the oil is to thin. Cut 10-15mm out of the spacer 15mm if your under 140lbs 10mm if over and put in some 20-30wt fork oil if over 200lbs 15wt if less. Credit to Dave Moss:)
Thinking of getting an MT-07, being 6’2” 180. Only thing I’ve been worried about is the suspension everyone talks about, this info will come in handy I reckon. Thank you!
Love my Trident. I heavily considered the MT-07 in my shopping. I had to go with the Trident though, Brand new model, good looking retro styling, and the triple engine. I wanted to stand out from the crowd, I got the crystal white. I think it does everything pretty well. I don't think you can go wrong with either the MT-07, Trident, or SV650. I would still pick the trident though, such class...
I was in the same boat, I narrowed it down to a trident or an MT07. I went the other way though and got the MT. I'll admit I was biased though, because I did my motorcycle training on MT07s, and I just loved them the moment I got on them. Tried a kawasaki of the same engine size and hated it immediately... It was just something about the light weight, instant torque that I got on with I think.
Don't listen to these two idiots. These are NOT beginner bikes. 75 and 80 hp respectfully. Get a USED 250 to 500cc bike. I own a brand new Trident. It is stupid fast. It's probably my 30th bike. I also currently have a tiger 1200 XCA for the long trips. The pros of the trident, ABS, traction control, throttle by wire, the looks. The sound, TFT screen, 2 ride modes. it shifts perfectly, crisp..Bluetooth connectivity, $8200. the cons, the seat sucks, the engine produces a ton of heat. The mirrors suck, handlebars are tight. They need to be wider. They need bar risers too. No other complaints. It's so much fun on the very twisty roads of northeast Pennsylvania.
As an older rider I'm no longer interested in choosing raucous over smooth. Odd that people are saying the Trident is more of a beginner or starter bike, when the far side of the bell curve showing age indicates that riders with the most years of experience are more likely to prefer the Trident. I'm not quite ready to get my motorcycle reviews from AARP, but I don't have a need to judge the value of a bike by its ability to wheelie.
Hello, I am an older rider also. My street riding started with a Yamaha R5. And you are spot on. Just because my 900 Eliminator made Santa Fe to Albuquerque in 27 minutes with my future wife as pillion ... fun memory but never again. Have a Trident in the garage --- my retirement bike. Got a nice 1976 Kaw 900 LTD for eye candy but that Triumph is great for my weight and abilities. 5'9" 162lbs. Fits perfect. Good luck.
@@Tondaloona03 you make it sound like you are comparing a ducati to a royal enfield. half of the things that they like about the MT are negatives on any other bike (snatchy throttle and crap suspension). to say that the MT07 is hands down a better bike is kinda stupid. not to mention the yamaha looks like a pupating larva, and the triumph looks amazing.
I love my Trident, it's a bit harder to handle on low speed manuevers than mt07 - possibly due to firmer suspension on Triumph. Nonetheless it rips through corners lovely. The whine over 6k is just amazing, quickshifter adds to the experience, I love ripping it through the twisties. My only complaint is the same as Spite's - the cutout in the tank is just in the wrong place. I'm 6'0 and about 32 inch insem (european here so not sure if I did my math correctly). I could use higher pegs or simply different shape of the cutout. However once you ride it this doesn't bother you at all. The bike is amazing for beginners. Pulls from 2k RPM in the city like nothing, and the power curve is amazing. I would choose jt over the mt07 anytime. Michelin tires are awesome aswell. The mt07 is to snatchy on the throttle and Has wonky suspension. Still a lovely bike but I simply think the Trident wins in the category.
Yeah, it's a bit stiff on low speed maneuvers and with my short ass legs it makes it even harder. It's really my only complaint with the bike and I'm just short so I deal with it.
I have a 2020 MT07 and it’s cheap and fun I paid $8k out the door for mine last year and was money well spent. Never got to do exhaust yet but the R6 throttle tube was the best mode yet. No extra power but a lot less twist to get the power.
Both are great, but the Trident styling has me leaning that way. Not to mention options like a quick shifter and Bluetooth connectivity (navigation) which I'd love to have on my bike. Can't go wrong either way though.
I've had my Trident 660 since May, and I have to be honest... You definitely have to get it past the break in. Once past the break-in, the whole mapping and throttle feel is a world of difference. It really does come into it's own! I hope this helps a little.
@@rickymahoney6664 you have to bring it in. I believe only the dealer has the ability to update the software. It also changes the shift warning light to a higher rpm.
Its true. After 3000km. Upgrade with Zard full system exhaust and mapping. Trident become the Beast. Less gas throttle delay. More 6 or 7 hp after that. Engine quite cooler. Alot of my friend feel the same and happy with it. Just dont give up on this Trident.
Agreed. I've had mine since June. The bike changes dramatically after breaking it in. It's a smooth ride under 5k rpm.. but very snappy and responsive at 5k and up.
Mt07 is def going to be my first choice for a bike however one thing to keep in mind. You guys knock the z650 and other bikes for being "boring" but like the mt07 because of reason that some starter riders to not go with (bad suspension and too snappy throttle). Maybe a bike like the z or triumph and other "boring" bikes may be better for starters because they are smoother to learn on. Gotta keep in mind guys. You guys have years and many bikes worth of experience while other creators may recommend a more boring starter bike because of learning and can then grow into an mt07 or a sport bike. Just food for thought
70hp/50tq to someone who’s never rode is not a beginner bike dude lmao 😂 let them have whiskey throttle in first that thing is gonna throw them like a bronco. 200/300/400cc is a beginner bike
My wife and I literally own both these bikes. Mines the triumph 660 and hers is the MT07 but we switch often. I agree the Triumph is the superior of the two in styling and is a much more refined motorcycle. I like both these bikes but I disagree with Yam and Spites statement that the Triumph isn't as "playful" as the Yamaha. We bought the MT07 because we got a super great deal but the Triumph was the better bang for the buck out of the two in my opinion because of all the standard equipment and electronics. The 660 is every bit as "fun" and "playful" as the MT07 and Yam and Spite are wrong on this one in my humble opinion.
@@ChrisWolf75 that you experienced similar if not the same amount of fun on the triumph and they didn’t. was the one you rode serviced? maybe the ride by wire throttle opened up after it was broken in?
@@bnb_daddy I think yami guys don't think refinement is fun. The MT-07 is less refined, more raw. To them its more fun. I own the Trident by the way, I love the refinement. Its such an complete package, well thought out for the majority of riders. Unfortunately Yami just wants to be a hoonigan.
@@dukeviper8385 "Character" does NOT equal poor & flawed riding characteristics! I find this position plain stupid. It is the exact reverse. Fine handling is "character".....the character to enable the rider to do exactly what he wants up to his full limits of skill. And that is NOT the MT 07.
flaws can also get you killed, we are talking about motorcycling after all. I tried both 2021 mt 07 and trident, and tbh i really preferred trident over mt, such a joy to ride through the city.
Not a fan of the MT07 myself, if I had to choose 1 word I would say it’s immature. Not a fan of the pogo stick suspension, the braking isn’t as good as others in its class. Big fan of the CB650R personally, such a polished, refined bike for the price, with a very linear inline 4.
Yamaha on every corner. Triumph a premium, exclusive bike. Nothing like a triple, torque of V2 and horsepower similar in line four. A taste of both. Yamaha is a great product but European pulls on my heart strings. Like comparing a corvette to a Lambo. They both do the same thing but one is more of an adventure.
Heres a request for a future video: Put a $200 tune on the Trident then remake this video. Everyone knows the Trident has been nurtured from birth out of the factory, just don’t know how much. we want to know what it’s capable of out of the box if you simply rework the mapping. I’ve had a Trident for about 4 months and I was already thinking about my next bike. Until i put a $200 DNK tune on it. never, I repeat never, has a tune changed the character of a bike like it does with the trident. Utterly different machine and it’s a blast to ride. I think even you will be surprised with how much torque limiting and ‘smoothing’ they’ve done at the factory. Need you to make it happen. Game on!
Hey, that’s good to know! Would the tune void the warranty? I’m a newer rider and I bought a Trident. I’d be willing to to tune once I’d like some more pazzaz from her.
Yam daddy is gonna worship the aprilia for no good reason and declare it the winner because they probably pay him to say it’s the best motorcycle ever made. The R7 may get “It’s a decent bike, lacking on power. Ergos are decent. Price is ok. Back to the Aprilia.”
I have a 2020 mt07 and i FUCKING LOVE MY BIKE! Its so frickin fun to ride, good choice for the money. Get an r6 throttle tube with a grip on it, shorter throw, makes such a big difference along with taking away just a little throttle freeplay, totally changes the feel especially on downshift blips. Got an rsc clutch and the clutch pull is so light and smooth.
@@michaelgriffin1601 im getting a new bike soon. And I’m leaning towards the mto7. I know it’s not all about speed but I want something pretty fast that I can get the hang of without feeling unimpressed or that I’ll die on the back of it
@@robsantiago8251 go with it, i got mine a year ago, its such a fun bike to ride it stamps a smile on your face every time, the sound of it can be enjoyable after 4k rpm even with the stock massive exhaust, if you get a full akrapovic the sound is simply the best out of the 650cc naked bikes. Theres no way you will regret the mt07, very solid and well put together bike
I bought my MT07 3 days ago and just love it. I've had a 675 Street Triple and loved it for over 6 years. I was really torn between these bikes but I didn't want with another euro bike. Parts for the MT07 are so readily available and less expensive.
When in doubt, get an SV 650. There’s a reason they are building those since 1999. And it even saves you some bucks, which you can then spend on pizza and ice cream.
I just picked up my first bike a few weeks ago the xsr700 and I was debating between that and the trident. I love the Yamaha and it looks like I made the right decision
As someone whose about 5'6" on a good day I would appreciate you guys having someone a tad shorter on these bikes during comparisons! Not the end of the world, but man the mental gymanstics of trying to figure out how someone 6" taller than me fits compared to me is hard sometimes lolol
I’m 6’6’’ and there is one really easy solution to this problem. Just jump on the bike you are interested in… Your dealer will be mooooore than happy to let you try.
Yammie would it be possible to do a Trident before and after ecu flash comparision. It would be interesting to see how much effect it has especially in the lower gears.
They should have given it the face of the previous generation of the MT-09. Still the best looking face I have ever seen on a bike imho. I don’t understand why they got rid of it with the new generation.
Fun review, thanks. Three questions. If you bought an MT07 would you get a new cartridge for the front forks? Seems to be the main let down? Secondly, did you get to really push either bike around tight corners? Finally, where I live the Suzuki GSX S750 is the same prices as the base Trident. Any chance of reviewing this as an option? Thanks
Do you think it is worth buying a 2021 MT07 at this point, or do you think Yamaha will update the suspension for the 2022 lineup to better compete with the Trident 660?
Might as well get an older one and look into the suspension. Replacing the fork oil for a thicker one will help quite a bit alone. Just search Dave Moss mt07.
So in comparison of BEGINNER bikes the mt07 is better because you have to wrestle it and it pops wheelies? Sounds like you guys are comparing which small bike is more fun for experienced riders... which is probably not the ideal market as compared to new riders.
2 years later I'm reading this road test and I just don't "get" their outcome....It makes no sense if judging by a bike finer points against another bikes finer points....I thought that was what it was all about.
I was trusting the multiple reviews stating the Trident was the better bike but then I saw them in person and the MT just looked and sounded so much better. Trident is refined but the MT is more streetwise.
I love how Spite just can't bring himself to even hint that he might like anything about the Trident in any video he's on it. *EDIT* I guess that's not a completely fair statement, but as someone who bought a Trident, he seems against it more so than other bikes.
Given he finds the bike cramped that isn't terribly surprising. He isn't into it even when it's off. As a 5ft 3in dude I find the Trident extremely comfortable, albeit a little too tall.
@@stevenpuckitt212 I was halfway tempted to consider thinking about buying the Trident, but when Spite sat on it and he said it was very cramped an uncomfortable for him that was a deal breaker for me. I’m 6’4 with quite long legs, so it wouldn’t work for me. Funny story, I went to a dealership and sat on a Honda 50cc dirtbike and my legs were so long I had to spread them out because they were above the handle bars, and I wasn’t coming anywhere close to being able to shift or use the rear brake. I was so so sad about that for the longest time because I wanted one so bad.
The worst part was when he complained about his feet getting caught up on the pegs. I got size 14 boots and have no problem whatsoever so it looks like the guy is just looking for shit to complain about.
I started this year on an MT-07, and I must say it's amazingly fun as a beginner! Scary of course, but I think that fear forced me to respect the power and danger of motorcycles more than a 300 would
It could go pretty wrong with an MT07 as a beginner and I don't mean get hit by a truck... my first bike was a MT07 and honestly it was too much for me in my first 6 months.
an mt 07 in beginner configuration has 48horses. so does the trident, an F750/850 Gs, an sv 650, a vstrom 650, etc. well in countries mandating a sensible progression anyways.
as someone who started on a 50 cc two stroke went up to a 125 cc 4 stroke, then a 185 cc two stroke, then a 250 cc 4 stroke, then a 400 cc, then a 650 cc (went back to this currently because it felt like the perfect amount of power), then a 1000 cc. I cant say that I felt 600/700 cc bike feels like a biginner bike to me 😂 but I understand their point 🤣
Why don't motorcycles have centre stands any more? In most cases, parking the bike on a center stand is more stable, if you have a rear puncture, if you need to oil the chain. I have the 2000 CBR600 F4 around 200kg wet 100HP AND it has a center stand. Sure, you could make the argument for a track bike, but what is the excuse for these learner mobiles?
“This (Trident) is the weapon of a Jedi Knight. Not as clumsy or random as a blaster (MT-07). An elegant weapon, for a more civilized age.” -Obi Yam Kenobi
A big issue for me on bikes and gives me the most pleasure is the handling. This wasn’t covered at all in this ‘comprehensive’ comparison review. What boring roads you chose. Sorry guys not impressed with this test at all!
Alot of the complaints on the Trident are true.....DURING THE BREAK IN PERIOD.... I noticed the one you are using is still in that mode. I have one and once I hit that 1k km mark, the bike just opened up. No more weird "strain" on the RPMs like its holding itself back. At 1k km the RPM stopped flashing on the speedo and it felt like a completely different bike. It was like someone took the choke collar off. The whine was now there and lept through the RPMS making using the quickshifter a joy..... so please Yams...give it another shot AFTER the ( i think) 600 mile mark when the gauge stops flashing. Something unlocks in that machine and its a blast to ride now.
it has a special map for the running in period specifically so that the engine can actually run itself in instead of getting it's full performance taken immediately. same as a C8 corvette.
@@anonym3017 yes its really odd and quite frankly off-putting while I was in that time so I have complete sympathy for those that tried it or have it during that mode...cause ...ugh... It was like it was struggling all the time and did not want to go past 5k RPM ( the bike..not me) I was not expecting such a change when I hit the 1k mark but man was that a game changer and a solidifying reassurance I got the right bike :)
@@trextexting yeah it doesn't want to go past 5k because you aren't supposed to take it to super high revs during break in. and you also aren't supposed to demand full power from it at any rpm. so triumph puts in a second map that is active until the running in period is complete which puts a soft limit on RPMs and limits torque to 70 os so percent at all RPMs. with the upside being that youir engine gets properly run in and will live quite a bit longer than if itr weren't properly run in. again. It's the same stuff as on a C8 corvette for exactly the same purpose. it even says that in the manual.
@@yammienoob Truth. It’s mechanical noise due to straight cut gears which the Trident doesn’t have. It’s not just going to appear after break in. If that was the case the other triples would react the same way which they don’t.
I don’t know man, everyone says the MT-07 is awesome, but I had a 2009 Street Triple 675 R (round lights) matte grey with no electronics and you can find a preowned one for cheap and that’s light years better than both the Trident and the Yamaha even if older (fully adjustable suspension, radial brakes)… but watch out: the restyled “drop” lights is softened and dull due to a different gear spacing.
it even seems bad to try to fix defects or downsides in mt 07, taking advantage of the fact of 1- generation mt 07 -2014 have the softest and softest suspension,..but still,.. remembering that it is by far the one that sold the most and still sells,..I have the model. mt 07 2020 and indeed it may not have the best suspension in the world, but even so and in my opinion I have no reason to complain, and I even think it's pretty tough, weight 65kg,.. the mt 07 is a simpler bike, and Fortunately,. because that only brings advantages, both in feling, as maintenance, revisions etc,..but it is its character that most highlights it,..a motorcycle with 68hp at the wheel and does what you see in the video,..well, no it goes without saying that the bike has excellent availability, torque,... which makes it very special, but that's not all,... its ease of riding,... which allows you to explore safely and even amend some exaggeration,..but in short, each person should buy what they like,..the trident 660 is also a good option,..and even more refined, but I don't find it so fun,..it's a sweeter bike Softer ,..
13:20 - 13:30 would you say that on the Triumph you have to try for that extra umph? tank you tank you everybody, I'll be here all week. Jokes aside, great content guys
I’m looking into getting a bike! I’ve always wanted a bike when I was a lot younger and I’ve always gravitated towards a classy looking bike! The triumph is a very good looking bike! And for minute in this video I really considered it. But for a couple of years my interest in bikes slowly faded away (I thought it was just an age thing) until I saw John wick on that mt09 I was like “what the hell is that thing” needless to say I remembered why my interest peaked again and it’s all due to the Yamaha mt09. Although I won’t be getting that as a beginner bike 😂😂😂 plus I’m 6’3 so it seems like a fun comfy ride! Yamaha mt07 is definitely going to be my bike!
Ok so MT 07 is an awesome bike along with the Trident 660. Cool there's only one problem. THEY'RE NONE LEFT IN THE UNITED STATES. They're all sold out. I've talk to 2 of my Yamaha dealers and my Triumph dealership and neither of them are getting any new or used ones till next year. So those 2 are off my list.
I still have my 15', FZ-07. Yamaha hit a sweet spot with the engine, it has the perfect combination of torque and power down in most of the range, it's all about the engine with this bike and you can't stop having fun with it. It's true, other bikes might have better this or that but it's the engine that makes a bike fun. Just stop wondering and get an MT-07 ... turn that frown upside down.
Have you noticed rust on the swingarm? or any issue with the coolant hoses? Those have been the main issues I've read about the fit and finish. Other than that it seems to be a good bike.
@@izzy8609 yea I got a 2018 model got a bit of rust on swingarm and on coolant hoses white spots it is unavoidable unless you spray it with wd or something often
@@wash.625 Honestly it seems unavoidable on most bikes regardless of manufacturer, I've heard of it on showroom fresh Hondas all the way to 15 thousand dollar ducatis. it just seems to be the way things happen. manufacturers have gotten lazy with their fit and finish department in modern times it would seem.
These bikes are not for experienced riders who want to “have fun on weekend rides”, with that in mind the Triumph is a far better bike with better suspension and a forgiving throttle response. Inexperienced riders want confidence inspiring bikes and you have to review them based on the type of people that will be buying them! Also you shouldn’t be doing an acceleration test with 2 people at a massively different weight!
I rode both of these bikes on the Angeles Crest Highway and then up to Monterey. The suspension on the Trident was much much better. In the twisties I didn’t get that nose dive and always seemed to be in the right gear. I agree with the video, the Yamaha is much more herky jerky. Both were very good lane splitting, actually fun.
The shape of the tank on the Trident is fubar for taller riders, and it's not even the "knee indent" that's the problem - it's the V shaped edge of the tank opposite your knee that prevents taller riders from gripping the tank. This is exacerbated by a seat which slides the rider towards the tank. Lovely bike to ride, but I couldn't live with it.
call me old fashioned, buy i personally hate the LCD style displays on most modern bikes, they ,just in my opinion are too hard to see in the sun, i prefer old tried and true analog style needles to tell speed and RPM. just a preference, but the triumph is definitely a nice looking bike
@@michaelgriffin1601 yesyesyes, thats exactly it, the effortless ease it can whip baby wheelies in second gear, the sound with a nice akrapovic on, its just pure emotion and fun.
Got the trident back in April after riding Harley’s all my life. Right at 6’ and I feel very comfortable. Yoshimura pipe and over 15,000 miles, some from IA to CA an back to IA. Amazing bike. Highly recommend. Very versatile.
Remember when the trident got announced and papa yam thought it was the best thing since sliced bread? Put it at the top of the list of 650’s before it even came out lol
Bikes are getting WORSE & WORSE rather than better. Listening to, what I believe, honest and accurate reviews, I am not excited to by either of those bikes or the R7. I'd be looking at a 100BHP, good torque but also high revving (yes, I know the two are hard to combine - maybe a triple) analogue dials, ABS but no other electronics; forget Blue Tooth and all that crap ....... I want a bike, NOT a video game ......... and for me, a low seat height and no more than say about 180KG. The big manufacturers are missing-out on sales to shorter guys and ladies.
OC! Which do I like more the MT07 or the Trident? Put it this way I totaled my 2017 FZ07 and took the insurance money and purchased a 2009 Ducati Monster 1200. I'm currently in the processes of selling or trading with a cash kicker the Ducati so I can ride a FZ/MT07 again. The bike is just too much fun to not ride one.
My 2020 mt07 is sooooo fun to ride, so much low end torque thats useable without ringing the rpms out. Engine is so smooth and sounds amazing. I ride it around twisty colorado mountain twisties all the time and i think it handles just fine unless youre some sort of track purest. It wheelies so easy. Perfect ergonomics in between comfort and aggressive, can still get aggressive with the big tank cutouts. Such a good everyday bike that is just fun af to ride. Would highly recommend, unless youre tracking it the suspension seems just fine to me. Power curve is so linear, very easy bike to ride at any skill level. Idk how the 2021 has a jurky throttle? My 2020 is so smooth on and off, wierd to hear that.
@@michaelgriffin1601 thanks for that answer. People on yt scare me a bit coz of a suspension....they say it is soft or that it has strange feeling. I think it is the best option.
