In this video, Dr Mike shows you the sensory and motor divisions of the trigeminal nerve. He explains how touch, proprioception, nociception and temperature from the mouth, face, and head are processed in the brainstem. He then focuses on how a noxious stimuli (nociception) from the face can be interpreted as pain.

I've been suffering from Trigeminal Neuralgia for about two years, and it's really hard that people don't know how painful it is. 😢😢

I had a decompressive craniectomy 3yrs ago for a compression on my trigeminal root, there was a vessel looped around it and I needed a double decompression, they used teflon and muscle from my neck. I suffered immense pain and this diagram is the closest explanation I've ever come across. Recently I started studying neuropsychology in hope to help others, thank you for this video it has helped me in more ways than one.

I also had the same surgery for trigeminal neuralgia around 2 years ago! How are you feeling now? I'd say I'm in about 75% remission. Get a few zaps a month, that's about it.

I was diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia 6 yrs ago. The most debilitating pain I’ve ever experienced. I’ve been managing it with medication, acupuncture and a chiropractic care.

People that have never experienced the pain from this have absolutely no idea what pain is, you can be the toughest person on the planet and this WILL break you. It's so fortunate that so many find a doctor that finds the cause early, some, like myself go years before finding the cause, not through lack of trying. The information on this needs to be pushed out there, especially to "pain clinics", I went through 2, one I went biweekly for 2 years and all they did was try pain meds, after I told them either I didn't want to be on pain meds the rest of my life or their meds did nothing, absolutely nothing, but they didn't care, they never listened, screw you Nexus Pain Care.

Can I ask how you discovered what the cause of your trigeminal neuralgia was and what you did for treatment once you figured it out? Feel like I'm in a never-ending cycle of torture.

Thank you so much for explaining what's happening to me. I woke up 5.5 weeks ago feeling like someone was constantly kicking me in the neck, skull, face, nose, jaw, & teeth on the left side. For the 1st week & half I would wake up with this & it would stay with me till I finally passed out around 2am. I have a large tool box of tools & meds to deal with my Central Neuropathic Pain Disorder, & nothing helped to calm the pain down. I usually suffer with some type of pressure headache in the fall, but have never experienced such severe long lasting pain. My Osteopath calmed the pains in my neck & top of skull after 3 weekly treatments, but just could control the rest. Two weeks ago I was introduced to Cluster headaches, & have taken a deep dive researching the topic. I've watched numerous webinars & introductory videos as well as watched multiple videos posted by victims during an attack. I 've learned what works in aborting an attack & what doesn't. Now after watching your video, I fully understand what's happening to me & how complex this disorder is. Thank you so much for this & for being who you are in educating ppl on this topic. I'm hoping this info will help my Osteopath treat this disorder quicker.

Thank You as a suffer of all 3. I've had it for about 10-11years. I've learnt more from this video about what is going on than I have through my neurologist. Thank You.

The editing and explaining you do on this is really impressive! I stumbled on this trying to understand the weird pain experience I had after sinus surgery and this has been very helpful. I’m also a professor and admire how you can draw/write legibly and talk so logically at the same time!

@@hdv6 No. I get it for about 4 weeks every year. This year was 5 weeks. Sometimes 6 attacks a day, sometimes many many all through the day - every 10 mins. Or so. Never while I'm sleeping.

I was skeptical about alternative treatments for trigeminal neuralgia until I discovered Planet Ayurveda. Their medicines have been a game-changer for me. The potent blend of herbs they offer is not only effective in alleviating the pain but has also improved my overall health. Their holistic approach, focusing on balancing the body's energies, has brought a sense of harmony and relief that I hadn't experienced with conventional medications.

That was a brilliant explanation however felt let down at the very end when suggesting Pharma drugs. Some of those drugs come with black box warning. There must be other ways to help treat this condition not suppress it.

Great video After seeing many Dentists, Doctors, a neurologist and oral surgeon, nobody could explain why I’m in so much pain. Interesting as I have long Covid and it’s all to do with the autonomic system. I thought this might be related,

My issue with biology classes is they never tell you where all that stuff is located, how big it is, nor show you the "thing" their referring to in a context of the body. So I have no clue what I'm actually looking at. For exp, what is that thing on the right? I assume upward facing brain + neck part of the nervous system. If so, what perspective am I looking at the cross-section from?? Up / behind the body? Also how big is that ganglion thing, where is it? How many of them are there? I mean I might sound stupid to someone who already mastered this branch and you could tell me to google it, but that kinda defeats the purpose of watching these presentations. When all that could be so easily avoided by showing the exact imagery to students instead of abstract drawing of nerves connecting to "something" outside of body that's bigger than an eyeball. It's so hard to remember all the functions of those components when you have no clue what they're showing you.

Recently, I am getting shooting pains from my scalp that are like 'small electrical shocks' affecting my upper gums and teeth. For example, when I scratch my head towards the back and left-side, this activates pain in my upper gums/teeth on the inside of my mouth. Also, this happens more frequently when towel-drying my head. Typically, these pains are triggered whenever the rear of the scalp (left-side) is scratched, combed or rubbed. Boy, does it hurt! --- What do you think?

What happens to the information/messages in this part of a now exquisitely hyperactive nervous system if you've had a really bad case of facial, scalp, and neck shingles/post hepretic neuralgia pain following along the familiar paths of previously experienced (off and on, years before shingles) trigeminal neuralgias of the jaw, ear and neck, especially now involving intractable itching of the neck and scalp to the point of injury?

July 20th this year I had a accident when I was hit by a heavy vehicle while walking and received a non displaced fractured nasal bone and fractured 4th rib on the right side..it wasn't until around 4 weeks later that I began to feel tingling and prickling/electrical zapping feeling across my forehead and eyebrows with tenderness just below my left temple area along with partial numbness on forehead and frontal headaches with a pressure type of pain on my nose. it isn't getting any better and I have an appointment soon with a neurologist. my local doctor has put me on Lyrica 150mg which maybe taking the edge of it so far but it is still annoying me quite abit. I'm not sure if it's the trigeminal nerve that is the problem but I guess it could be. I also get some tingling on the back of my scalp which may also suggest occipital nerve problems, I'm no doctor but after doing allot of reading online, I have been trying to guess what is going on..or what type of nerve damage the blunt force trauma has caused. I hope that in time something will be able to treat this and help ease it because it's driving me nuts
