I am 34 and work in Minneapolis (I run an IT department). Do I know anything about farming? Nope. Do I want to learn about farming (which absolutely means all aspects - political or whatnot)? I am not a farmer but I am a retired veteran and very proud to be an American and 100% agree with your thoughts. Keep up the great work you do to feed Americans. I do raise garlic which is a great cash crop-I have 1,200 heads planted and will be harvesting it around July 13, 2019. Love your videos keep it up. I grew up on a farm in Idaho 50 years ago driving Massey Ferguson and two cylinder John Deer tractors. I have not driven a tractor in over 45 years. I am watching these videos because I find it very entertaining, and the Millennial Farmer family puts a smile on my face. I am also amazed at what tractors and combines can do now days. In may day boredom and freezing my butt was the name of the game. Great Job - key on farming!!

Hi, here's a farmers son which has not taken over the farm. I'm working class now. But I'm certenly do understand your opinion. But what I can see from out of the Neterlands is that Your "Big man" is doing a very good job. You can discuss about the way he is doing this but I agree with you guys. Zach, This is a great great video. I’ve watched enough of your vids to know that “politics” is not what they are supposed to be about, nor should they be. That being said it’s educational to get the perspective of someone who is being directly affected by this administrations’ policies. In this era of hyper partisan politics any commentary or discussion about any of this is a slippery slope indeed. Kudos to you for the honesty and courage to address this issue. Good job.

Great video. I farm 900 ac of corn / beans in northern IL. Have been able to plant 1 day (April 26) this spring. Fair comments on the market facilitation payments. The 150 ac I have planted looks great. See what the next 3 days bring relative to more rain. We are normally 105 tp 113 day. Will be going to shorter. I guess now I know where it will be coming from. Keep up the good work.

I grew up on a Dairy Farm in Carroll county Maryland. I really enjoy your videos. And appreciate you opinions. Most farmers from what I have seen don't want to get involved with politics, they just want to feed their families and their communities.

I appreciate your candor and VOR (voice of reason) in communicating the difficult balance in dealing with the challenges of farming along with government “trying to help” with well-intended subsidies. You have articulated various complicated issues that affect farmers at the grass roots. BTW, we’re down here in central Indiana farming country, and I can’t remember a wetter spring. There is hardly any corn or beans planted, and of course more rain continuing in the forecast. Glad you got in as much as you have. Great job Zach, and keep on keeping on!

Outstanding explanation of the business part of farming that most people don’t see! I grew up in Colorado farm country a jillion years ago and as a youngster who lived in town I just thought farmers climbed up on a tractor and rode around all day and fed cattle and set irrigation pipe. Having you explain what goes into a decision of what and when and where to plant along with subsidies yes or no, help provide context and depth to what our nations farmers cope with. Plus I really enjoy your sense of humor And how you use it to sustain yourself when things go wrong. Keep up the excellent work!

I grew up on an irrigated farm in western Colorado. Never saw or worked inside the BIG grain bins found in your part of the world until I went to western North Dakota and worked for a farmer for a couple of seasons. Winter & spring of 2011 presented us with many of the same challenges you're seeing this year.

Drove from Missouri to Indianapolis for the Indy500 this weekend. Lots of unplanted ground and flooded ground in Illinois and Indiana. Only saw a very few fields that had been planted or had corn out of the ground.

Farmers are as real as it gets !! Well most anyway !! They get out what they put in. That is real work.

It’s been awfully wet this year. We didn’t get the planters in the field here in Indiana till mid June.

You love what you do and you’re taking a stance on what you want to see happen.. I’m a farmer in norther Michigan and kind of the same thing is happening here especially with corn.. so it’s great to know that you’re stance a the same as mine. Thank you

You said it best and I think your right. We have a cattle ranch and last winter we used 300 round bales. Today our hay fields are standing in water and looks like a new lake. If the rain don't stop soon we will not get our hay for next winter and we will have to sell all of our cows.

Like most farmers I know, you are intelligent and eloquent. And your kids are adorable. Every year is a battle; this year, with the cold wet weather and the trade disputes, our farmers are caught between a rock and a hard place. Keep up the fight. And thank you for feeding the world.

I agree with you Zach, my thoughts are it will be long term benefit so yes take the money and keep the business strong until these new trade policies are worked out. The country will be better off in the long run.

A lot of my family are farmers in Wisconsin. I grew up working on my relatives farms! It was the best experience of my life. I think they need to have Summer Farm camps! Maybe they do already but if not they need to start! I have absolutely no problem with supporting farmers at all! We need to do what ever it takes to do that! 😊👍👍

In Vermont we have 0% of our corn in. Been getting rain every other day for the past 2 weeks or so. Gonna try and plant some this weekend.

Fbn, cool rain good for planted crop not good for wet empty fields. Love the 80's reference to The Govenator. Got some corn 🌽 last year not treated with pesticides, from a farm. And we were warned about worms (none). But came home 150 miles and found caterpillar on outside leaf. Corn was the best I ever had. Hasta law Vista baby.

I talked to one farmer in my area and he explained to me how crop insurance works. We're planting silage corn & grain corn for export... Nobody is planting soybeans... Temp's in the 50's at night & upper '60's during the day...Steady showers expected throughout the week... The weather you get, we get 2-days later in Central New York...only a bit warmer...

I agree 100% with you on this issue in particular for sure, no one wants to take "mailbox money" but our system is set up this way and when there is a problem and the money is there to keep farmers going, they "should" take it. After all farmers and ranchers feed the world, we need to protect them and keep them in business!!!! Thanks for the vid.

Interesting perspective I haven't considered about subsidies. If you don't take the mailbox-money, but your neighbor does.... you're instantly at a competitive disadvantage. Great commentary on the subject, it does highlight however the fact that, if subsidies weren't a part of the equation, land rent prices would be driven naturally down through market forces... along with all other inputs for that matter. The government perverts the free market system. Thus making food more expensive, thus raising the cost of living for everyone under the banner of helping. Love your channel.

Enjoyed your thoughts on subsidies and politics. As a European farmer in Ireland we are also often accused of living off subsidies but it's just like you said here too, we would prefer not to need them but don't always get a proper price for the product we supply and every cent we get goes back into our farms and locality...

Thank you for doing the hard work many of us take for granted. It is easy to not realize what goes into many of the items we pick up at our local grocery stores.

Hi Zack: When you're cleaning the bin out at 3:50 in this video, why not try taking a 26 inch wide snow shovel with a plastic blade on it to push that grain up behind the bin sweep auger, and then broom sweep afterwards. I've done that before, and had good luck with it. It might seem like a stupid idea, but at one time placing rubber tires on tractor rims (instead of using steel wheels) was viewed as a strange concept too.

I think what Trump is doing with the tariff thing should of been about four presidents back, our balance of trade is way out of wack anyway

A littel background first: I'm european (so maybe I've got a bit of an outside perspective on the whole thing, I don't know) currently studying economics at university and I'm writing a paper on chinese economy including the current trade situation with the US. I'll make it short. First of all, the theft of intellectual property by chinese enterpises. That's a big problem, worldwide, has been for years, but it's slowly getting a bit better. The trade deficit and the tariffs are enormously comlicated and big topics. The deficit is somewhat homemade with many companies setting up shop in China (and other asian markets) to produce there, because it's cheaper. Well leave that in place for a couple of years and it will and has spiraled out of control to the point where we currently are. Again, worldwide problem, not just for US. The tariffs... well the tariffs. There's pros and cons here. China has huge amounts of resources like steel, aluminum and rare earth. Some of that stuff is really hard to source elswhere so putting tariffs on that achieves nothing but making things more expensive for US consumers. Tariffs on agricultural products just made china buy them from diffrent markets like South America or Africa (where they're just buying the farmland alltogether). I could go on (15 pages into my paper currently). Sure, China has been playing dirty in the past and will continue to do so in the future, but what we should not forget is, that they haven't been open to foreign trade for that long (they started to slowly open up in the early 80s) and that they are still a communist (one party regime) country with a 5-year-plan based economy that is at times a little slow to respond to outside influences. And of course they retaliatet with tariffs on their own what else were they supposed to do? A global alliance or help from the WTO to resolve the situations (because most of them aren't exclusively US problems) would have been a little wiser, but what do I know. I guess it's a bit too late for that anyways, considering the slowly smouldering thing that might escalate into a US-EU trade war... Sometimes the tool needed in global trade negotiations is a pair needlenose-pliers to apply a little pressure until things loosen up, but the man currently running your country routinely uses a hammer and a crowbar. This used to work and maybe still does, but sometimes a little more finesse is needed. (No offense to anyone supporting him, but an outsiders view on him is just not very flattering at times) (also, unrelated, but there are broad similarities to the economic situation in china in the early 19th century. A country feels like it imports to much out of china and exports too little into china tries to resolve the situation to come out on top. In the early 1800s it was GB that wanted to export more into china and started trading them opium by the shipload until the chinese economy was crippled and many of their people opium addicted. China wanted to do somehting and long story short the opium wars happend and china had to give up Hong Kong to GB and opoen 5 port cities for outside trade) Also on that political middle comment. I feel you. Sometimes both sides hate you, that's just how it is. Loving your content and hoping the weather changes to your advantage soon. Cheers, Jakob Edit: Also supply chains. Never underestimate how fragile some supply chains are. A little bit of additional cost at the very beginnig of your supply chain (raw materials or small partial products) and it might trickle down the whole chain and either break it or cause a massive price increas at the end (imagine a whip, a very small flick at the base makes the end of a very long whip go quite fast)

Here in Colorado we have 3,000 acres of silage corn planted that goes from frosted tips to burned off black, luckily growing point is O.K.

We where so wet we didn’t plant corn till June 4th and 5th. Still have to work all the bean ground. Started raining again an hour and a half after finishing corn.
