It’s funny how the adage with hunting optics used to be spend as much (or more, or double) on your optics as you do on your rifle, but when discussing a red dot for duty use we’re hesitant to spend the equivalent on a red dot.
@NightwoodGuns
@NightwoodGuns 15 дней назад
That’s true! 😅 But in all fairness, there were many hunting optic complainers, too. That’s how we ended up with companies like Vortex seeing a lot of success.

The RMR HD is very nice. Good materials, good build, good machining and functions. But its WAY too overpriced. My "guess" the SRO breaks, when there is a rapid pressure change like when flying or changing their environment very quickly (like using them outside in winter and bringing them in near the fireplace). Better sealing etc.
@NightwoodGuns
@NightwoodGuns 10 месяцев назад
That is very possible 👍 Other than that, it seems the glass falls out at 30k-40k rounds. Not too shabby for the SRO 🤷‍♂️ We’ll have to see if the HD holds up as well as the OG RMR.
@rostamr4096
@rostamr4096 9 месяцев назад
I believe the reason for the SRO randomly breaking has a lot to do with the tempering and heat process for the glass. Most likely they are not following a constant method/process.
@NightwoodGuns
@NightwoodGuns 9 месяцев назад
It’s certainly possible. It would definitely explain the inconsistency of breakages. Some can survive 20 drops and other can’t survive just 1. Some break at 3k rounds, others will go 10k+

Speaking of big window optics, you might wanna check out the mecanik MO2. I got it for dirt cheap($139) as just a dot to mess around with but I was impressed by the features. The window is 20 x 28 mm, the glass and dot are pretty crisp and clear. I think they’re selling for so cheap(they usually cost ~$250) because they’re coming out with an even bigger windowed optic called the MO3 The big downside is that it has auto off but no shake awake, so I wouldn’t carry it but it’s held up to two USPSA matches so far which is usually where cheap dots go to die

the SRO flying shattering.... the gun was in the planes uncompressed space, the rapid change in atmospheric pressure caused it to explode. similar to diving, after a certain depth it explodes due to compression, in the sky is the opposite. expansion causes the glass to expand and can't while the metal is trying to contract from the cold unpressurized space...

Their big advantage is excellent button placement. So good that they sued Holosun when they tried using buttons large enough to feel without looking. A few lucky people have Holosons with larger buttons before they had to back to ant sized buttons. I hope Holosun can innovate some other reliable way to change brightness without having to look at the thing or borrowing your 2 year old kids fingers to change brightness.

I’ll wait til they update the SRO to have the auto brightness and the durability increased….or just wait until Holosun does it next year with a side battery tray 😂. Speaking of SROs breaking. I’ve always kinda had a suspicion, but do you think that maybe it has to do with temperature changes cause the glass to break? Cause I’ve never heard of anyone breaking due to physical stress, but it always seems when it’s day and left alone, which is why I feel like it could be temp related causing the glass to expand and contract maybe? 🤷🏻‍♂️

15:28-15:44 view through optic while shooting. Doesn’t look like the SRO gives any extra “tracking” room from your earlier ball catching comparison. Looks like recoil management and gun lock up type will make the biggest difference in where your dot is headed after a shot and where it’s coming back for the follow up shot. I always thought the benefits of round optics with thin case rings were to obstruct less of your eye sight. Good hon as always
@NightwoodGuns
@NightwoodGuns 10 месяцев назад
Honestly, the on-video comparison I did wasn’t the best. I had to reach around the tripod with a terrible grip and look at the dot on the camera while shooting. I don’t really have a good way of doing it, but I tried 😂 I probably have to get a helmet-cam to do it properly 🤣 You are right though, recoil management makes the biggest difference. But the taller window does work with my ball-catching analogy. The sooner you can see the dot, the sooner you can shoot your next shot and the easier it will be. It REALLY shows up while running a plate rack. And the thinner housing is nice for a clean field of view, but it’s not necessary. If people can shoot occluded dots, then a thicker housing won’t interfere much. 👍

@@NightwoodGuns for sure I don’t see a point in the big dots. Even the circle of death makes to much clutter sometimes especially on a pistol. @NightwoodGuns
@NightwoodGuns 10 месяцев назад
@@HKGunPlay It seems people with nasty astigmatism like the big dots. But mostly: big dots are great for fast action shooting with a lot of transitions and presentations. When target focusing, it’s easy to keep the big dot in your peripheral vision as the gun is recoiling and you are moving. Some people lose the smaller dots when running them fast and transitioning in daylight. Yes, compensators are worth it but you have to be willing to vet most of them for reliability. The only setups I 100% recommend without testing are the Radian Ramjet/Afterburner with a DPM Captured Soft Edition, the Staccato XC, and most Herrington Arms compensators. Question: how quickly will the fouling from the breech start to cover the front window..same as SRO, more or less? With the front-facing light sensor, will that be affected by the fouling (by occluding the light port) over time slow its responsiveness? What would be the cleaning method? A Q-tip will only get to the center/front surface, not to the outer edge of the circular port opening.
@NightwoodGuns
@NightwoodGuns 10 месяцев назад
It’s not fouling as quickly as the SRO. No signs of fouling on the light sensor. They buried it deep to avoid that 👍 If, for some reason, you did have to clean it… you might have to get creative.

I really enjoy your videos, the content is very informative and your chill demeanor is a nice change from other stuff I view. Question. In your opinion what would I be giving up getting the 4-4.5 pound trigger in the Staccato xc?
@NightwoodGuns
@NightwoodGuns 5 месяцев назад
I’m glad you’ve been enjoying the channel! As far as trigger weight, it’s just whatever you are comfortable with. If you feel a little uneasy with the idea of a light trigger I’d go with the 4-4.5. The only thing the lighter trigger does is make it a little easier to get the fastest possible splits while maintaining tighter groups. But you have to have great trigger control to do that. Basically, the lighter the trigger, the easier it is to avoid sympathetic movement in your hand when pulling the trigger. But be aware that some respectable people caution against lighter triggers because during an adrenaline dump you might not have as much control over your trigger finger as normal. So it’s about knowing your limitations and being honest with yourself about your ability. Just my opinion. I shoot lighter triggers most of the time so I’m extremely comfortable and confident with them even under stress. Hopefully that helps!

I got rid of all my pistol Trijicons (SRO, RMR) over the last year and continue load up on Leupolds (DPP) and Holosuns (507k, 407/507C, 509T). I am tempted with the RMR HD but at some point, economics and commonality have to come into play when I’m trying to outfit so many pistols with red dots. The RMR footprint is now the standard but the DPP is a viable alternative.

Right out of the gate, if I have to spend the kind of money for a sight as much as another sidearm, then it's pretty clear that the optics market is out of control. Think about it, as electronics continue to get smaller, materials and manufacturing processes improve and widespread, there's little justification for gouging consumers. Step back and consider that other areas of consumer products are not as expensive as these are. The electronics and materials going into these optics are the same as everything else yet the MSRP is disproportionate. I'm not saying things are cheap and these should be too or that inflation isn't real. What I'm saying is firearm optics is such a niche that manufacturers have convinced us there's justification for high pricing when it isn't. For example, look at the watch on your wrist. The tech and materials in it exceed the optic on your sidearm, yet it costs 5 or 10 times as much. Why? 1.) Optics are a niche market with far fewer buyers compared to other markets. 2.) Even though tooling has incorporated CNC which drives costs down (and repeatable), manufacturers are front-loading their profits because they lack the business skills to utilize their resources across additional markets. In other words, they only know how to do one thing so they jack up prices. 3.) They have been successful in convincing buyers this is the way it is and we have no other choice but to keep opening our wallets for them to plunder. We have two choices: take the red pill or the blue pill. We can either stay in their world of sucking us dry or we can improve our non-optic shooting skills. One of two things will happen: either they will adjust their MSRP realistically and if they don't, they go out of business. Either way, we become better shooters with more of our hard earned cash still in our pockets.
@KP-Pro2A
@KP-Pro2A 2 месяца назад
Having LASIK surgery on my eyes to restore them to the point that I can actually see my front sight post clearly is far more expensive than any optic. I’m ok with spending the money. Theres plenty of cheap optics out there for anyone who wants to keep more money in their pocket. It’s like a civic and a Mercedes. They’ll both get you from point A to point B, one just does it better and you pay a premium for it. I’d like them more and own more of them if they were in the 3-400 range though. Can’t cough up too many $650 purchases. Fortunately I don’t have that many pistols anyway, and I carry a Wilson, so the cost of the optic is only about 20-25% of the cost of the gun, not even close to. Just installed one yesterday, will be selling my rmr type 2 on eBay to offset the cost a little bit.
