here in florida our species of cicadas come out of the ground every year. But obviously not as many as the 17 year one.

And my sister from Indiana described them and wrote about the "roar" in their part of the country....... soon afterward she and her husband and. 3 of their children died in an accident. So reading about the returning cicadas sends me down memory lane...... Precious years of memories...... Their surviving children are doing very well with their adoptive parents. What will 17 more years bring?

Insects and animals can be interesting entertaining and bothers some at the same time. But nature is a wonderful thing to see and watch. I am living in the Philippines right now and have been for 13 years. And here insect and some smaller creatures are abundant. From a lizard that most homes have 1 or 2 living in that sleep all day and wake at night. They are no threat to people but can be loud with there chatter... Toookoooo Toookoooo it sounds like but they do a good job of eating unwanted pests in the house. But I would say the frogs here are the most bother some of them all. When it rains heavey they come out at night millions of then and croak all night. And they are loud... They fill themselves with air. Puffed up some can be as large as a soccer ball. Them they croak loudly as they expelled the air. But at times it can be kind of soothing as you fall a sleep ...depending on there size and sex the tone and sound differs... Every species of periodical cicada, that is. There are " annual" cicadas that that emerge after 2-10 years. They are called "annual" because they don't all emerge at once, but a few every year in one location. There are only 7 species of "prime" year cicadas. Three 17-year ones, and three 13-year ones. They are matched up in pairs, believe it or not. Meaning one 17year species is closely related to one 13year species, more so than the other two 17year species. And one of the 13-year broods is actually made of two different sub-species, making 6-1/2, or 7 species. There are some 3000 different species, so the prime-year ones are actually the acception to the rule.

@@gkimunge I actually moved to Kentucky in 2004 (last time the red-eyed creatures emerged) and believe me, in certain areas- they were almost as loud as a chainsaw. Definitely NOT soothing to me. We went to the Zoo in Louisville and they were EVERYWHERE.

At night in the south you won't hear what someone is saying without yelling for a couple months.

There are annual cicadas still. Just a different breed. In certain hotspots every 17 years it literally is day and night noise. You can’t go outside without a few flying into your face.

It may have been lice or mites cause cicadas are pretty good size.

OMG! I love cicadas. Most bugs actually. I've rarely been afraid of any bug. But I would have FREAKED OUT if that would have happened to me!!!!! I would probably feel traumatized for life!!! 🤣

you've never been rammed in the head by one then hehe. sometimes they don't have the best sense of avoidance, and they are quite rigid lol. Cant imagine taking one to the face while riding a motorcycle. However, for the most part I do agree they are friendly and harmless.

This is history playing out. Get video and pictures of it. Make it a positive experience. And yes, they are edible; though I've not been brave enough to try them (look up recipes on the internet), they are an excellent source of protein. Predators are going to FEAST!!!

That’s a great idea

I can understand both sides of the perspective on cicadas. On the one hand, they're lovely harmless bugs and rather adorable imo. On the other, large, unidentified buzzing thing flying past my peripheral vision is a surefire jumpscare. Doesn't matter if that flying thing is a cicada, bee, or large fly; they all make me flinch before I can tell what's what.

I hate their noise it's so annoying. I like the sound of a train blaring it's horn which my bf thinks is weird.

I'll take your word for it about the protein (yuck!), but I have used them for fish bait with a olt of success! Hey, maybe you can cover them in batter and deep fry them or grill them with bbq sauce, or chocolate covered! Sounds like a good way to supplement the income!
