I know this might seem strange but when it comes to trim I become overly protective since my City is near the 49th and we get winter snow and the Spring/Fall rain . I would buy a tube of the clear silicone caulking gel and make a very small hole on the plastic nozzle as if I was icing a cake. Once the gun is snug I pull the lever to run a steady bead on all the horizontal gaps on the trim as if I'm arc welding to have one break free application. The windshield trim got the top and side done to stop the partially polluted rain water from pooling at low points and rot the trim from within or any oxide base mental strip inside rubber spacers . The genius for the all-season clear Silicone is that it's temperature neutral to handle the freeze-thaw cycle and not crack or change shape on top of resisting fade from direct sunlight. Most of the horizontal areas on an assembles trim piece can be removed to clean behind it and the surface it touches similar to a 68 rear side reflector . You could take the time to make a quasi-silicone gasket by an even bead near the edge but it takes about 48 hours to cure. What I did was look for areas where rain will land when the car is parked , then look for areas being hit with water at 60 mph that is sprayed up by the car in front of me on wets roads. The top and front facing gaps can be sealed while I would also smear a gob on every screw head in the grill for headlight mounts and adjusting . Keep in mind that a near perfect Cougar that you actually drive twice a week or more would take a really keen eye to spot the narrow silicone bead around trim gaps and may look like a factory nylon edge spacer. The beauty is that it's like a gummy bear that peels away in one piece if you do it right while those Light screw gobs pull right off to get the screw drive head in . Even a safety pin or unfolded paper clip can route out the screw head. About 45 years ago I saw how rust can really ruin your day by that simple replacement of a small part held by 2 screws stripped so badly but rust it become a 1 hour job with a drill to not damage the screw hole. When the law demands you have 2 working headlights , the Police don't care that you have a new Seal beam light in the trunk waiting for you to get out the stuck retainer bezel on a burned out light. Being in a dry climate where winter is in the low 60's degrees .....it's still wise to Silicone seal horizontal trim gaps from the hand done car washes where water is left behind . As for that rear trunk lock where keys hit the trim .....I put a small patch of clear packaging tape that hard to notice and easy to remove. That material stuck to the NOS might get soft by a paint removing Heat Gun and just rub it away or peal back . Acetone may do it but I'm not sure how the surface will react. I had taken apart scale model cars that were botched and never painted but can be rebuilt once the old glue is removed .

There are two types of silicone! The acid curing silicone(vapor) is corrosive and would etch into the paint and ultimately cause rust. This is usually designed for use on glass or acryllics/plastics. The neutral cure silicone is non-corrosive and will not etch into the paint surface nor cause rust, as the name implies. This is the type of silicone used for metal roofing etc. and the one used by truck and caravan builders. Before you approach your 'kitty' make sure which silicone you're about to use ;)

' better to put 2 amber yellow lights or 2 yellow LED lights on the rear taillights for turning signals... more safety than plain red lights
