We sailed, and we socialised. Perhaps, above all else we bonded with our community. It was a pleasure to see greetings to newcomers issued with as much warmth and enthusiasm as those given to old friends and boats. The evening shore time laid on by the Royal Victoria Yacht Club at Wootton Creek (Isle of Wight) and Bembridge Sailing Club (Also IOW and steeped in fascinating history) both provided delicious meals, efficient bars and comfortable indoors and outdoor spaces to catch up with each other and the day. Perfect.
But this video is a capturing of some of the sailing. With eight races over three days and just one ‘longer’ leg it was hard going around the cans for some of the bigger boats. Conditions ranged from very light wind up to around 20 knot gusts. Some races it went from almost nothing to strong gusts , then back again, in quick succession. The fleet of 21 multihulls sailing every angle as they rounded the buoys on repeat. Filming was from on board Dazcat 1495 Hissy Fit, the biggest in the fleet. It took us a few races to get into stride, a few penalty pirouettes early on as we paid the price for maybe some miscalculations, and the ‘long’ leg was completed in just an hour (phew, no buoys to go around at last!).
The video tries to include all of the boats but with no fancy lenses or cameras to play with it’s generally a matter of who we’re nearest to. Apologies to anyone who is left out. The video isn’t always in strict chronological order. For a blow by blow of the race and footage of all the starts please see Yachts and Yachting www.yachtsandy..., with many thanks for the write up to our Race Officer Mike Samuelson.
Congratulations to F27 ‘Origami’ sailed by Mike Wood and crew for taking the 2013 MOCRA National Champion title. In 2nd place was ‘Alini’ sailed by Mark Upton-Brown and crew with Dazcat 1495 Hissy Fit, Simon Baker and crew, in 3rd place. Overall results in the Yachts and Yachting Article.
Every boat and every race has a backstory. We’ll be focusing on D-1 and team’s epic efforts in the lead up to and during the Nationals and ultimately her successful completion of a particularly gnarly Round the Island Race in her 35th anniversary year. The young ones who have taken her on have an additional challenge to the one faced by the young Darren Newton (who won the 1993 RTI…) in that they are dealing with a now old lady, which we all know (in boat terms of course) comes with its own joys and tribulations. Watch this space for more on that…
Thanks to all involved.
Drone footage with thanks to Angus Fellows.
