🚴♂️ Introducing my new SiteVision LIDAR rig! 🚴
I just ran a quick test mapping a bike lane using an iPhone 15, a Trimble DA2, and SiteVision. I covered 15km in just 1.5 hours, and I learned a lot along the way.
I know some of you might be wondering about the precision and you're right; this setup isn't survey-grade (yet), but it's better than you might think!
Here are some interesting things I discovered:
☄ Speed and Tracking: Whether I was riding at 8km/h or 20km/h, the AR struggled to keep up and relied on the GNSS for accuracy. But surprisingly, the scan stayed pretty close to the GNSS feed even at higher speeds.
🛰 GNSS Placement: Extending the GNSS holder away from my body would help reduce signal drops and improve precision. The AR can't compensate at higher speeds, so this was crucial.
📐 Angling the Rig: Pointing the rig slightly to the side (to the left, since we ride on the left in New Zealand) while ensuring overlap on my return trip, improving the point cloud coverage.
✨ Point Density: Even at higher speeds, the point density was impressive, and the true-color point cloud was super useful.
🗺 View Perspective: A top-down view was much easier to follow than the AR view in my case.
🏑 Different handle: I knew from the start that I should use a different handle to keep the LIDAR pointed forward and the GPS upright, and this proved true. I never tried with a custom handle so a great test and learn that it worked.
While this setup isn't quite survey-grade yet, it shows a lot of promise for high-quality GIS LIDAR mapping. I've got some ideas to make it even better, but curious to see what would your rig look like 🚵♀️
