Trimming the Feet on a Cow

One of the cows we're feeding was having trouble getting around because her toes had grown too long. Since we had some friends visiting, we decided it was a good time to trim her feet. She was decidedly unappreciative but the following day, she was walking much better and seemed like she was holding no grudges. Once again Mr. Puckett demonstrates a low stress way to handle cattle without the need for thousands of dollars in infrastructure to handle cattle. The bovine podiatry was performed with simple corral, a few hands, rope, and good horses rather than sophisticated handling facilities, tipping tables, and LOADS of stress on the cow. There was no rodeo, no cruelty, no inhumane treatment of the cow. This does nothing but confirm the adage that, "The Old Ways are the Best Ways …' Mr. Puckett confirms that in the ranching business a good cattleman and a good horseman are often one and the same. Indeed, all true, but, in the soggy, Great Lakes region, horses, cows and people would be hurt slip sliding in all the mud and ice that is so prevailant in many months.

I will only add a brief rebuttal. Pat used to doctor on the frozen winter feed grounds of Montana and Wyoming using many of these same techniques. Yes, it was more dangerous but still necessary.

Very nice. I've not seen cows hooves that long before. You must have some soft sand. You also looked like you could use a battery powered sawzall. 😉

Always good to have help. I’ve come to the realization that most times it takes 2 people - me and someone that knows what they are doing.

Fantastic video! I've spent my life in SE PA and always wanted to see "real" ranch cowboys in action. I always knew it was a whole lot different than Rodeoing.

THIS IS a REALLY GOOD one as it shows the REAL treatment of a cow as opposed to what you see at a RODEO .. RODEO is NOT the average ranching way of working cows ??? There are certain times when the methods must be used but as a RULE, you would not want to run the weight off your own cattle and take the chance of YOU, YOUR HORSE, or the cow, OR ALL THREE GETTING INJURED ..That would not be beneficial to the operation .. This also shows the PROFESSIONAL cooperation of the hands as they work to get the cow down without injury or too much STRESS .. EXCELLENT job ... Not rushed but done quickly and calmly ...Thank you for the videos these are GREAT.

Is that a Black Belty or also called a Black Belted cow? I believe their proper name is Galoway or something like that. There's a small herd of them about 30 miles north of us along Hwy 101 just south of Ukiah.

Quite different from trimming a Midwest dairy herd. Would have thought the landscape there would keep hooves worn. How often is it necessary to trim, and, do your cattle get white line splits too?

My horse is scared of cows. I got thrown off in May from it, but typically he just bolts when he sees them. Any tips for desensitizing him to cows? The cows are unfortunately not friendly so I can’t just tie him to a post with one.
@PatnDebPuckett

You can try working him somewhere close to the cows and get closer and closer as he relaxes. Don’t make the cows the object of your attention. Trot circles, figure 8’s, etc. Also, watch our video on the one rein stop. If you feel him even think about bolting, you need to shut him down. Bolting is not ok.

I’d love to see a video of how Pat dallied off. He took the rope under the horses neck as to keep him faced to the cow.
