We're continuing with the Peppermint Bustle this week, trimming out all the skirts with tons and tons of pleats, bias trim, and vintage ribbon. Let me show you how I did it!

This is gorgeous! Also, my cat LOVES sitting under my skirts. He hid under there for 2 hours once, only revealing that he was there to playfully swipe at the feet of me and my roommates when we walked by.

There's nothing like a skirt tent! Even if you are wearing it at the time. I have unfortunately kicked Dora before, when she has snuck under the skirt while I'm wearing it, without me realizing it. And thanks!

Absolutely love that vintage trim! It gives it just that little more in a way that isn't overpowering at all. My cat used to hide in my shirts. Basically I'd have a purring heap of laundry. :}

Very nice! You've probably already started on the bodice, but if not, I hope you have the stripes running vertically along your body. Can't wait to see the entire outfit finished! Love the fabric. Because it's cotton, you might need a steamer. Ironing the skirt would not be fun! Your cat is awesome and of course wants to check out the new skirt and new hiding place! Please give her/him an extra pat from a complete stranger!

This bustle skirt is life. Amazing job, also squee! And yes, my cat loves my long skirts. Her favorite is when I am in the them and she can use me as mobile cover, like Mother Ginger herself.

Thank you! Cleaning is definitely a challenge, and this one currently has to be cleaned, and the bottom pleats repleated, because I totally muddied my hem on its first wearing. I love all the peppermint stripes... your stanima amazes me... all that layers of trim 😍... as for the rest of the fabric... I would buy all available... just to be on the safe side... then a cute little draw string purse with a red tassel on the bottom would be the cherry on your peppermint sundae 🍨... stunning skirt n you will be beautiful in it... blessings

Love all the change in direction on the stripes! It's like an optical illusion, it might make people dizzy if you're twirling too fast :D (I took a long break from YT and now I'm catching up xD You can probably expect a lot of comments from me over the next week(s)...)

When the design is woven in the ribbon like that its a jacquard ribbon! I think they can also be called brocade ribbons, they are my absolute favorite:) I think they are so pretty and it took me forever to find the term for them to be able to search them.

Now that's a dress for the British seaside! Do you have a sweet called rock? It's usually spiralling striped with the stripe running right through the stick of rock. You'd fit right in!

So, I've been avoiding those quilting cottons for my sewing, except for quilting, for a long time because it feels so lightweight. What weight fabrics would those period dresses have used?

You can use quilting cottons in lots of eras! They work well for 18th c cotton gowns, and for anything late 1820s-1890s, I'd say. I don't think they have quite the right drape/feel for Regency, generally.

Weight was a function of season, usually-summer gown fabrics were light enough that you could see the vague shape of text on the other side if you held it to a window.

I have often heard not to sew garments with quilting cotton because it doesn’t drape well, but your bustle has a beautiful drape. Am I confusing the concept of drape with movement? I am not asking this question very well. Do you sew with quilting cotton often?

I think it depends on what you're using it for. I find it has an excellent drape for bustle, and for a lot of other Victorian fashions. But I wouldn't use it for Regency, where you generally want a softer hand in your cottons.

I'm not one of those people who keep all their cabbage. If it's a large enough piece that I can use it for something (a reticule, trim, etc) I will save it, but otherwise I throw it away. I just don't have space in my small house to keep scraps.
