This video shows the restoration, repair, and testing of the Trio W-40 vacuum tube receiver. I love the 60's audio products. This stereo receiver was made to last and it has for 60+ years. I also cover my two vacuum tube testers the B&K 707 along with the Hickok 6000A.

The W-40 is such a beauty. My late father bought a Sansui PM-880 FM Mono Tube Receiver back in the 60s. Sansui introduced the PM-880 in April 1958. Anyway, the PM-880 has stayed dormant for over 40 years until I took it for a service late last year. Amazingly, only 1 tube 12AX7 was not working. This baby also has the 6E5 (Magic Eye) which is so captivating. Now, the PM-880 is fully functional. Such is the beauty and quality of vintage gears.

Yes, she is. Thanks for keeping your Dad's Sansui going. Most of this equipment can continue operating for many more decades to come with a little help.

That's a really nice unit! The Company was founded in Japan in 1946 as Kasuga Radio Co. Ltd., imported the first units to the United States by 1957, one year before they introduced their brand Trio. Kenwood Electronics Inc. was founded in L.A. in 1964, while the European branch was founded 1968 as Trio-Kenwood Electronics S.A. in Brussels. That's how the Trio brand survived much longer in Europe.

@Vintage Audio Addict @phonatic Thanks for the info! I was raised in the UK and Trio was a very prominent brand over there right into the late ’80s, it was only then that they changed to Kenwood. Why the delay? Well, I think it may have something to do with the fact that the Kenwood name was already taken. Kenwood was a very well-established brand in the UK that made kitchen appliances, and I guess they continued with Trio to save confusion, or perhaps they weren’t allowed to use the name. Quite why things changed, and it no longer mattered in the late 80’s I don’t know, however, both the brands have done fine since.

@@MatthewBrannigan Thank you for sharing your experience. I was too young in the 80's to would have been familiar with hifi brands back then. I just caught the vintage Trio-Kenwood bug last year, aquiring all the important early solid state amps TK-150, KA-2000, KA-2500, TK-250, and the legendary Supreme 1. There is some beautiful charme in their sound and appearance most modern amps lack nowadays, not to mention that unique design that still reminds me somehow of the Apollo moon landing. Well, it was that same era. Plus I love that mono switch, which makes is much easier for me to play 78's through them as well.

Ever time I see someone use their tube tester it takes me back to my childhood. Not sure how many of you remember but back in the day every drug store had a tube tester where you could go to test a tube. Yup that's right back then they wanted you to fix your own stuff. My tube tester is an old Elco so I a bit jealous!! LOL

Thanks for sharing. I remember going to radio shack and they had a large stand up tube tester along with the new replacement tubes on shelves below. Yes, back in the day when you fixed your electronics. Now a days if something breaks you wait for trash day.

You are so lucky to own this wonderful piece of equipment. I am still mourning giving away my dad's Fisher Hi-Fi tube amp he purchased in 1965. One of the two audio output transformers went bad some 30 years later and I could not find a replacement. I gave it away to a real fanatic who told me he was going to actually "make a replacement transformer." His enthusiasm made the decision to give it away much easier.

Trio became Kenwood. I did NOT know that. My very first stereo receiver was a Kenwood TK-40. (circa 1969). I still have a Kenwood KT6060 "Audio Lab Scope". (circa 1970) I recapped it a few years ago but I think its time to replace some (HV) diodes. I also had a Kenwood KT-7000 Tuner (1970) that I really liked, but I traded it in for other equipment in 1999.

Just a thought, as the output valves are 2 x EL84 in push pull you will NOT get 20 watts per channel. More like 10/12 depending on how you measure power output. At a specific distortion level or into clipping. Nice receiver however, I remember it well.

The Trio branding survived into the 80s in the UK, because there was already a well-known company here called Kenwood - makers of the Kenwood Chef kitchen mixer.

Any chance you have a Fisher 500C in your collection? I too have tube testers, an Eico 666 and a Hickok 750. I won't even try to list my VTVMs and other era-correct test equipment. There's something sacrilegious about repairing tube equipment with a DMM and a digital scope. 😄👍
