Nelson and Dick were returning from visiting their parents in South Carolina when they made this trip to Atlanta in 1984. Experience the luxury of riding in a Chevrolet Malibu in this video by Nelson Sullivan.
80's was the best decade of my life. I was born in the 50's. 80's music was the best. You probably were here in the 80's but like most people, your conscious memory was erased in the re-birth process. Google "hypnotic past-life regression".
jackasses the word vlogging didn’t exist back then but home video did dummies 😂 home cam corders existed since the 80’s 😆 I have hours of home recordings since the mid 80’s does that mean me and my lil bro were also the first video bloggers at age 5 and 8 ??? 😂 Doubt it
Makes me realize how short life is. I’m in my later 30s now, around the same age as they were. To these guys the 80s probably seemed like it was yesterday... I’m sure it’ll feel the same to me.
It's amazing to look back and see how much things really haven't changed much in 40 years. We are still driving gas powered vehicles, still listening to the radio, still eating at McDonald's lol. All that changed is our communication technology.
There is so much here. The Malibu, which was probably a 1978. Such a dependable car. You can see another in the shop at the garage later on. The music, the sandwiches, the ambiance, the other cars truly transport you to 1984 in a way few if any home videos do. Nelson really did capture magic.
The 78 and 79 were identical except the grille insert. The 80 an 81 had a more flush grille surround with a different grille insert for each year. 82 and 83 had quad headlamps.
I remember seeing so many squared cars when I was little 😁 I was born in 82 but I remember them box cars. 😆To me they seem so hug on the inside much more room then the cars today and a lot more comfortable. My uncle had a big blue car we used to call it ole blue😁
I love nelsons personality and his southern drawl and his sarcastic little digs he had to be so fun and cute to be around. If there's a heaven Nelson you're an Angel up there rip
Nelson and Dick are pioneers. I was 13 years old when this was filmed and growing up in Greenville SC. I wasn’t quite ready yet, but watching this and knowing that I was only 7 miles north of that Amoco station where they gassed up at, I can’t help but dream that they would have scooped me up and taken me to Atlanta or NY. I made it to Atlanta in 1989 when the time was right and eventually to NY in 1999. Always a step behind these trail blazers who carved the way for me and in a sense formed a piece on my identity. Godspeed.
@ryanguerry5994 it’s the Augusta exit off 85, I can’t remember the number but if they take a right out of the gas station then they’d be heading downtown
@@ThrowinTDs933 yes the eastside. Kingsgate neighborhood between 1976-1986. Eastside High and FAC. Some moving around between 86-89, Haywood Rd and Toy St by Cleveland Park.
I love Nelson's traveling videos. Whether it's from Kershaw to Atlanta, or riding the bus up and down 14th Street in NYC. They're calm and meditative, and also packed with information about the landscape of 80s America.
This shows the difference between when he shot film mostly like a "normal" person at the time, facing outwards, vs facing the camera towards himself which was revolutionary at the time, especially with the way he held it so stable and the way he guided us through his experience.
His house is still there in Atlanta. 1714 Adolphus St -- I live in Dallas now but am from Atlanta and am pretty familiar with the Little Five Points area so it only took a few min to find. I was happy to see it's still there because so many have been torn down over the years.
This video deserves more views. I was born in 89, even back then in the 90's you went outside and play. no phones, no tablettes. Was a great time to be alive.
Many of us feel the same way. That's the beauty of what Nelson did. Because of him, we can all take a trip back in time to experience just a taste of what it was like.
Wow. That footage from ATL was awesome. It looks so different now. That interstate construction they showed at around 11:20 is what is now “spaghetti junction” at 85 and 285 on the north side.
Nelson (yes I know he's gone from THIS world, but)😔... Darlin I LOVE YA!!! I was 10. Grew up in Dallas Texas. And this is my childhood right here. Your other video in 1989 was the year of my first boyfriend/first kiss etc, when I fell in love with thrash metal. So many memories just seeing visions of the Southern highways. The cars, the music on the radio, the signs....Even the crinkling of a paper bagged lunch, wow. You dont realize how much we've lost. You done good.
As a new sub early in her obsession, I just want to say how grateful I am for Dick uploading these vids. Thank you so much! 💕 *edited to add thanks to all involved with the 5 ninth collective 💞
My first car, Dick and Nelson look so handsome in their clothes. We love you Dick and Robert! Thank you :) I love Nelson, grew up in Atlanta, hurts I never crossed paths with Nelson or Dick. So thankful for this though, so excited when I saw a new video pop up!!
The footage in the car is great. Takes me back to when cars had leg room across the entire front of the car. There was no divider in the middle. Just a small hump where the ashtrays were.
This is so cool, to see everyday life and people going about their days in 1984. I'm 24 so I did not live at this time. I can only imagine what it was like
Maybe you were around then lol. Perhaps just in a different body/life. Maybe that's why you enioy these and are fascinated by the time. You said you weren't alive yet. Maybe that's not the case.
I took a road trip in the summer of 1989 with my dad and we drove through many of the same areas. Looks just how I remember it then. It’s amazing how much Atlanta changed in the following decade.
I was 12 years old back in 1984, & I was visiting my Grandmother in Orangeburg, South Carolina. The memories of the road trips each summer. & stopping at the roadside attraction ( South of the Boarder)
these videos are the most wonderful thing to ever happen to youtube. something so sweet yet so sad that he could never have known they would be shared in this way. love you Nelson! and much love to whoever is uploading them. i shared a few of these videos at a film club i go to because Nelson and these days he filmed are so special.
I always love these (esp. the Atlanta ones) but I got to thinking during this one-- these are actually very important historical documents. Is there ANY other body of video out there that shows what regular life was like 35 years ago? This is unique. Thanks for this channel.
Dissent Truth- yeah. It's at the part where Nelson is sharing his homemade sandwiches with dick. I thought that was hilarious because I've been told that before
So nostalgic to me. That 'Old Keg Party Shop' was right near where i lived and the gas station too where they stopped. The music brings back memories, as well. These years in the video were some of the best times of my life. I remember that ride from Greenville to Atlanta so well on 1-85 back then. Thanks for these videos..remarkable.
WOW..... We need to ask Rupaul to revisit this incredible very important Time Capsule. This is Beautiful. just wow! and Every comment here is 100! wow... anybody who knows Atlanta knows the sound of galloping down that span of 85 into or out of Midtown. The construction of Spaghetti Junction! And the MARTA trains are THE SAME!! nearly 40years later. THE C&S building that was brought down in 93. (We called the Baby Peachtree Plaza) This is my home, I was there, witnessing it as it happed. 84, I was 9. Nelson was feeling some type of way 8:44 with that MAZE Happy Feelings playing. This is incredible. . THANK YOU for this.... rip ....it’s November 2021
What memories this brings back! I remember those days, the spectacular sunsets, traveling in the south. They had an awesome soundtrack on this trip!! :)
I love these videos...win I was a young boy my Family moved a lot Around Southeast America During this time...This is like looking at old photos lost in my mind...I love it :)
Such a cool time capsule to some of my old stomping grounds. The radio mentions getting some concert tickets at Horizon Records- I've bought music and seen live shows there, and it's still in business today! They passed the Greenville Spartanburg Airport where I worked in my late teens. And they mentioned Rockhill where I went to college, and grew up in Greenville. What a small world. I look forward to watching more of these videos.
@jcrva4633 I remember the day after I originally saw this I drove back to that area to see how much it has changed and it’s drastic, gas station is gone to no surprise I’m sure
So funny. The first thing is the cross in Cowpens thats still there today. Passing through Gaffney. Back then in the spring from Blacksburg to Spartanburg it was a sea of pink on both sides of 85 with all the peach orchirds in bloom. I wish he wouldve gotten the big Peachoid water tower. lol
Back when gas stations still offered "full" service. The guy would come out and pump it for you. Also would clean the windshield and check the fluids. It cost more of course which is why you see them waiting for an opening at the self service pumps lol.
