***** The sanctions MUST be imposed as NK has lied, and walked away from talks so many times that the UN placed even harsher sanctions. China abides by those sanction and they are NK's biggest supplier of goods that NK needs. China's major banks don't want to do business with NK because NK default on their loans, and flat out cheat those who have invested in NK. NK is the spoiled brat of Asia, and they MUST be punished through harsher sanctions. I say pray for the people of NK especially those living outside of Pyongyang those are the NK's who suffer the most, NOT those who live in Pyongyang.
They seem to be doing pretty well considering they've been cut off from the rest of the commercial world for such a long time. Sure, they're not going to show you the slums and poverty on these tours, but a huge proportion of of my own country (Moldova) is a total shithole, even the capital, and mind you it's a democratic republic
Beautiful city, beautiful country. Full of revolutionary art pieces to the glory of the people, praising the anti-imperialist, anti-capitalist nature of the DPRK, the power of its defence army and the glory of its ideological leadership, the Korean Workers' Party, protecting the country from capitalist profit-war invasion and leading the country into collectivisation reforms, despite the harsh situation the DPRK has been put in since the fall of the Soviet Union and the revisionist downturn of both the Soviet Union and China. It's no wonder why the DPRK is so isolated. It must protect its revolution by any means against foreign corporatist interests. Socialist Realist art and architecture is strong and powerful, and defies the rule of money by the undeniable collective power of the working class!
**I do not support the cult of leaders and some of the DPRK's economic policies, but an isolated country that do not want to screw up its revolution must somehow pay for its defence, its pursuit of the revolution and its self-reliance (which is, like with Cuba, almost impossible to achieve without some contact with the external world).
There is a big difference to make, I think, between our capitalist interpretation of the socialist reality of the DPRK and real, historical facts, and our media play a lot on this. Mass starvation is a consequence of the 90s' crisis following the fall of the Soviet Union, because the state cannot produce enough food to sustain itself and must not open to the external world, in fear that capitalism will influence its people and make them revolt and succumb to U.S. imperialism, that will install a new U.S.-linked capitalist regime in the DPRK that will exploit its people for enrichment and make them believe in consumerism. This is also the reason of such closed borders in the DPRK; it's the idea that, as long as forces will be opposed to the socialist revolution and will try to make it fall in order to take back the land for themselves, as a market and a producing nation, there should be no "interference" with the nation. However, about what you call "mass starvation", this is going way better since the 2000s and now food production is slowly going back to its 1980s level. The Songun policy may be also a reason for this "mass starvation"; since the fall of the Soviet Union, and for the reasons I have talked about above, the DPRK has no more ally and must protect itself all alone against all of the capitalist world that will use ANY PRETEXT to invade it and to crush the regime -- that is mostly a socialist regime, with state-run and collectivized production and total redistribution of everything, with art based on educating the people, with universal services, etc. --, so the DPRK had to fun heavily its military, so that it can defend the country and persuade the enemy (the capitalist world led by the U.S.) not to invade to take it over. When I talked about invasion by market forces and influence of capitalism, that is also the reason for labour camps and lack of freedoms; there must be no interference to the collective revolution of all toward "freedom of labour" and "freedom of intelligence" from individualists, seekers of personal wealth or propagaters of indoctrination to self-construction of the mind -- for example, churches and liberal ideologies. Thus, people trying to interfer to the people's development and freedom with that must be driven out of society. However, if the ideology is followed and people really care about developing shared values, protecting collective production and gain, defending the role of the Party (that is the intellectual force of the regime), of the leaders -- which we can talk about later --, then there is space for debate. However, such regimes follow Lenin's doctrine that say that political debate must be made within the Party, and this is true that since the Party organisation is "static" in the DPRK -- it has not changed for years --, there is not a lot of space left for political debate, and it is mostly left to the credentials of the military officials, Party leader and other officials. However, there is no need for a lot of freedom of expression if your regime provides you with what you need and explains to you its policies -- through state propaganda and education. This is questionable, but the Party is supposed to represent the people's needs and aspirations to improve itself, since it is supposed to be the intellectual force of the people. We can see that most of this has changed, since the DPRK is now a defensive and self-relying force, and not a progressive force -- and the DPRK is still very traditional in its culture. Self-reliance (or Juche) is indeed the Marxist-Leninist ideology that tells that a regime can only be free in its own revolution if it is economically self-reliant, politically independent and strong in defence. About the cult of the leaders... this is something all quite intense socialist regimes (that recognize the existence of the "enemies of the people" and of the need to pursue socialism against all odds). I'm not really sure about that, but maybe in those regimes, the extensive policies of the leader make them seen as a semi-deistic figure, more than a figure of change: a figure of liberation. It may be because of the nature of the regime; one leader ideologically leads the Party into the changes it makes, and it influences the people, and the people see in this leader something like some kind of prophet of human progress and realisation, someone to pay deep respect to. Propaganda about the regime may increase it, when the regime is trying to prove its people it is there for their own sake, for the sake of the working class, and that the leader is there to liberate them further, to make their lives better and freer. You may know it already, but Kim Jong-il was a film maniac, and he knew exactly how to make film to make the people "feel" the ideology, to make them believe in socialism and reject capitalism. Art in the DPRK is pretty much about bolstering the working class and dirtying personal wealth and the search for more wealth through market wars and economical oppression. And since the Party is the leading unit of the working class, and the leader is chiefing it, then it is also bolstered. :) That is all I can say!
Yeah, freedom to poison ourselves with fast food, buy all the latest gadgets to make our lives more meaningful, watch stimulating and uplifting TV shows, "say" whatever we want, even though it doesn't make a damn bit of difference. Yay for freedom!
+Clive Lewis Freedom of choice is worth more then anything, things which you mentioned are just excuses. Nobody forbids you to travell on foot and eating from trash cans, it is your own decision that prevents you from doing that. You decided that there are some comfort and living limits, which you don`t want to give up. Those who have no freedom they have no such luxury, they will eat that they were given, they will sleep when they were told to do, and they will die when someone decides for them.
Yes it is a clean city because there are thousands of citizens who live in Pyongyang who must help clean the streets by hand every day. It's one thing to volunteer to keep your city clean, it's another when you are required to do that. I've been to Pyongyang and seen it for my own eyes, and as orderly and clean as it is, it's that way to fool the tourist into believing that it is such an idealistic and orderly city better then the rest of the world cities. This is a product of Stalinist ideals and teachings. Go out of Pyongyang and you'll see a whole different world. Don't believe the DPRK hype!

Looks like a country of 1900. Poor people who have to life there and will never see where their little benefits go to Pyongyang city. @@helmutquad1960 Yes the people outside of Pyongyang are basically third class citizens, and they live harsh lives. NK government usually only shows Pyongyang because that is where most of their resources are used, and spent on. You have to be of a higher class NK to even live in that city, and there is even a class system within the city. SAD!!

I thought the people in Pyongyang are all the same class and and in the line with the called " workers party ". But when I took a look at the videos I think , the people who have to clean up the streets must be in a downsized class. Is that correct? Greetings!
@@helmutquad1960 Exactly! The top class are those connected to the Government, or top military officers. They still have a lower class in Pyongyang, but it's still better then what they lowest class has to deal with in the rural areas. Most of the people in Pyongyang have nice clothes, look healthy, have nice apartments. By the way many of those apartments they show, no one lives in the higher levels because they cannot produce enough water pressure to pump water to those higher apartments. Electricity is rationed out they have many brown outs, and black outs even in Pyongyang. In the countryside, the vegetation at one time was almost totally denuded due to the fact that people needed wood for fire to heat their homes, and they were also eating most of the wild plants. In the rural areas if you can't work lets say because you broke your leg some how, you government rations are lowered until that person gets better and goes back to work, if that person doesn't get better....OH WELL TOUGH LUCK for that family. South Korea still works hard at sneaking in radio's, DVD players, DVD's, CD's, small TV's and other things like money which most NK's in the rural areas use in the black market. Without the Black Market most rural NK people would really be screwed.

Good video, so strange though.. in other videos I've seen on North Korea, they say you need permission just to enter North Korea, can't take videos or pictures and if you do, the guide or the police have to check it and depending on the video or picture, they will make you delete it. In this video there are lots of cars and other videos, there are next to none..... So I'm a bit confused, which version of North Korea is correct?
Well, you DO need visa to get to NK. About taking pic, you pretty much can take any pic/videos on tours , but tours (although are very informative and elaborate) are only options and you can't walk around yourself, without a guide. It doesn;t bother me, but i guess could be to some people.

Am i the only one who watches these guided tours thinking that just before a tour is scheduled to arrive they have loudspeakers or go around somehow and alert the people and tell them to act. Like in my head I can vision them seeing the tour bus coming and then scream AAaanndd......ACTION!

We have been conditioned in the US to think that all North Koreans are automatons who live only to worship Kim Jong-Un and the ruling elite. Read the latest book by Daniel Tudor and James Pearson: "North Korea Confidential." They explain what is happening in the DPRK right now, the good and the bad, in this excellent book. In it, they shoot down a lot of myths about the country, including: “North Koreans are mindless automatons; they can’t think for themselves and are slaves to the state.” “North Koreans know nothing of the outside world; they know and believe only what the regime tells them.” “North Korea is the world’s last holdout Communist Dictatorship. There is no market to speak of, and the private sector plays no role.” “The Kim Regime is focused only on concentrating and abusing power at the expense of its people. Less cars=less carbon in the air that's true, but NK's air in Pyongyang is full of coal carbon, and wood smoke because there isn't enough heating oil/LP gas to heat homes, so coal, and wood is used. Pyongyang sometimes has very bad pollution, but do you think for a minute they will post a video showing that? HELL NO! Pyongyang must be shown as the pristine city of the world.

Seeing that Rogers would want to buy North Korea if he could doesn't make the present situation in North Korea an investors hidden gold mine. Much would have to change before anyone other then Kim and his lunatic hierarchy. North Korea has many NATURAL resources that can make many an investor's rich. The problem is Kim and his regime. Kim himself is unable to tap into many of these resources because he doesn't have the money nor the technology. Kim and hie elitist regime are too fixated on their paranoia of the outside world so most of their economy is wasted on the military. Kim Jung Un compared to his father one could say IS making changes, but those changes are only for the upper elite in the DPRK party and military, NOT the people. Before any wealth can be tapped out of NK Kim and his cronies will have to either give up power, or be removed.

Thus, the DPRK has improved since the early and late nineties while The United States of America's middle-classed citizens are transitioning into lower-class citizens. In other terms, the roles are GRADUALLY reversing between China, the DPRK, and the West.

There are trips as low as $400-$500 for 3 days and 2 nights, and with the new Chinese laws concerning visas (you can be in Beijing for 72 hours without having to pay the $200 for a double entry visa into China), it is even less expensive than it used to be. Koryo Tours still has 25 separate group tours scheduled that range from just Pyongyang to all over the entire country--contrary to popular belief in the US.

+ALBERTPORTAL well i live in London, at night in my very street and all over London i hear and see foxes, just outside Buckingham Palace we have a huge lake full of Swans, Geese, Turns, Ducks. Almost every tree in London has Grey Squirels, there are so many they are considered a pest. Ive seen Owls on many an occasion, birds of prey too. In my garden i have a resident Robin...i could go on. This is exactly why i made the comment, its strange to me not see wildlife even though i live in a massive urban area called London.

The DPRK is going forward, slow, but step by step. More cars, more businesses, over all looks better than 20 years ago. In the places off huge cement fields of nothing they should put trees. The government spends alot off $ on monuments and colossal statues.?. For the price off one they could build factories, facilities, more power plants, and so on. Indeed, its the waste, importance of monumet building before people feeding, and empty sky high hotels etc that make the country such a place of hardship for most citizens there. Myself, i have no problem with a socialist regime or any political form, a perect 'way' has never been found after all. But cruelty and torture, hunger even starvation, a forced politic, and a country run by such people should not be allowed in todays world. Where is the rest of the world when all these people are repressed, where are the western powers now, they were very quick to invade Iraq because of Saddams regime but that country was a paradise and easy living compared to the DPRK!

However, subjects are beginning to consume a bit more nutritional meals due to the formation of a "middle-classed" society within Pyongyang and various other fairly developed cities within the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

That's pretty typical for Pyongyang, although, like in nearly all countries, even very rich ones, the rural areas are much poorer. Difference is as far as anyone can tell, the government assigns jobs and housing there.
