Trip to La Palma 

Bonnie Hörk Hello. I live in Spain and am thinking of moving to La Palma. It looks so beautiful and green and I like the fact that it does not have the extremes of temperature that we experience here in Andalucía. Can I ask how did you find it in comparison to living on the mainland? Any tips?

Hi Stephanie! It's easier I think to get in contact with people on the island. The culture is very influenced by South America. Those (even young people) borned there don't speak any english. But there is an openess and higher amount of happiness there in my opinion. There is an english church with various places for ceremony. The people going there are interested in the genuine culture and dramatic landscape. Climate is moistured in the east- and west side is called "The sunny side". I lived in S:ta Cruz first- and took the bus to the beaches in the west sometimes. I lived at a hotel for two days, then I found a cheap apartment. Good luck!! Love/B

Hi Bonnie. Many thanks for the helpful reply. We live in Andalucía (inland) at the moment and love it here but my husband has emphysema and struggles with the cold winters. I speak Spanish (more or less!) and prefer to be part of the local community rather than just among expats, although we have English friends here too. I like the sound of the openness and greater happiness. And the South American influence, which I suppose also applies to the accent. I sometimes get a bit lost in group conversations with Spanish friends here, so maybe that will be easier. What particularly draws me to La Palma (apart from the climate) is the natural beauty and greenery. I love being outside in nature, walking or mountain biking. I'm also hoping to be able to grow fruits and vegetables all year, maybe even some of the more exotic fruits. We have seen a possible rental in Puntagorda but not sure if this is on the cooler/damper side. Need to check the map. Anyway, sorry to ramble on and thanks again for taking the trouble to reply x

Dear Stephanie! With the knowledge of your husband; move to the west side. And not to much nortern. Recommend Garafia and southern. I suffered from asthma on the east side. Start with renting. I think you will be able to buy something when you are there to check it out. Don¨t hurry. There will be properties for you, interact with local people, read signs among the road and within villages.
