Howie, three days after watching your documentary, my wife and I decided to wake up at 4 AM this morning, August 16, 2023,, and make the trip from Binan, Laguna to the Escolta Pasig River Ferry station. My wife already has limitations on how far she can walk and so traveling by car is the best option for her. Escolta has safe parking spaces for cars. We are both senior citizens already. At any rate, we enjoyed our little day trip along the Pasig River. Not as scenic as other major rivers in other countries, but comparable in terms of the rich history our Pasig River has. I'm terribly disappointed to learn from your documentary that the Duterte administration has decided to scrap the Pasig River Commission. I just hope the river does not go back to its biologically dead state. I learned about the PAREX project more than two years ago and I am among those who are against it. I liked the way you present the opposition to PAREX against the backdrop of the Pasig River's rich history and its potential to become a major alternative to land-based commuting in Manila. No one but you can do it in this manner. Congratulations!
Binuwag ni Duterte yun kasi laki ng budget ang bagal ng Improvement. Pasig River cross across several LGUs. The old organization barely have a power to command the LGU. It needs to be MMDA, to force LGU to participate, DHSUD for relocation of Squatters, DENR, etc. It is a good strategy. Malaki pinagbago. Squatters near the stream, the LGU, through MMDA, relocate them. DENR makes guidelines and monitoring. Pasig rehabilitation does not need another organization, but only the those agencies in the Government that actually has the power to implement and DENR for guidance and monitoring of the quality of the river. Why spend another Billions for an organization when you can call the agencies to collaborate? Why spend another millions for monitoring when the DENR has all the facilities such as laboratories? "The commission’s powers and functions, listed by Executive Order No. 93, was then transferred to other government agencies and offices like Manila Bay Task Force, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA). Philippines has a lot of river systems that are viable alternative mode of transportation. Halos lahat ng mauunlad na bansa, meron silang mga river transport system na gamit nila sa byahe or sa Tourism. Sana ay tuloy tuloy ito sa Pinas, dahil hindi lang makasaysayan ang Pasig River, makatutulong pa ito sa mga byahero at Turismo ng Metro Manila. Mabuhay po kayo MMDA at sa pamahalaan ng Maynila.Wag po sana kayong bibitaw na pangalagaan ang Pasig River, at paunlarin at pagandahin pa ang river transport system ng buong ka Maynilaan.

Isa po ako sa commuter na gumagamit ng Pasig Ferry sa pagpasok sa eskwelahan, at sa totoo lang po malaking tulong po ito as an alternative mode of transportation. Mabilis, payapa, at higit sa lahat libre. Bukod po doon, nagconduct po kami ng research study sa parte ng Ilog Pasig (Pinagbuhatan/Napindan) na nagpapatunay po na malaki ang tulong ng mga bangka o sasakyang pangtubig bilang alternative mode of transportation sa mga komyuter siyudad ng Metro Manila halimbawa na lang po ang bangka-tawid sa Pasig (Nagpayong) to Taguig (Napindan) at Pasig (Pineda) to Makati (Guadalupe). Patunay ang Pasig Ferry at mga bangka-tawid sa ilog Pasig na hindi kailangan ng expressway upang maibsan ang problema sa traffic. Kailangan lamang ng sapat na suporta sa alternative mode of transportation sa ilog Pasig.

When Pasig river is having issues regarding the PAREX and conservation of the river, some Filipinos are ranting about how the river looked when an actor took a picture having the river as the background. I admire the improvement of the river way back in 2014. Thanks to I Witness for informing us about the current issues of the river.

The real hard task was made around 2018. The DENR started giving Notice of Violations to several companies, including Manila Water and Maynilad Water. Several companies or buildings where given penalties and it forced them to make their own waste water treatment facilities. I know about this because I am a consultant and a lot of companies asked help and asking for a waste water treatment tech available. 2019-2020, several Squatters living beside the streams were relocated. Those were hard decisions that the old organization do not have the power to implement because at the end of the day, they do not have power over LGUs and DENR.
PAREX has some major issues including how this project basically skipped few processes that any projects would go to. It lacked proper environmental studies and didn't even gone to Swiss challenge either, making SMC monopolizing this resource and no competition which seems unlawful for something democratic as Philippines. Also, the traffic solution will be temporary but will catch up again with congestion due to people encouraging to drive more and focus more on car-centric solution, creating induce demand. Car centric isn't compatible to high density cities, especially Metro Manila. Even lower density cities in US suffers from similar or worse traffic conditions than Metro Manila, yet we replicate them instead of learning from our Asian neighbours that have been proven right that investing with proper mass transport such as railways are ultimate solution to high density population cities. All also has benefit of not destroying the beauty of the city as well. Pasig River is also tiny, having 6 lanes in there will cover most of the river. Making it more of a covered canal that will not encourage life to the river anymore, and under the expressway will be unattractive for development and will just introduce urban decay and blight. There is a reason why many cities around the world like Tokyo are undoing their highways above rivers since they were built around 60-70's, when car centric mentality were booming.
Can't imagine what's the face of Metro Manila at ng mga ilog during 1700-1800s. Kasi kung ma imagine mo lang sa mga records about sa lugar. Napaka ganda pala talaga noong unang araw. Nakaka sama lang ng loob na hindi siya na pangalagaan.

Dapat ito ang pagtuunan ng pansin ng ating Department of Transportation as public transportation at public commerce.. Magamit muli ang Ilog Pasig bilang waterway at daanan tulad noong unang panahon ng ating mga ninuno.

Pasig river is the most famous and most important river system in the Philippines. It is in the middle of Manila and the National Capital Region. What ever happened to this river will affect the the entire NCR or the Philippines. Putting the expressway on top of it will surely disgrace the river and all the land surrounding it unless the structure they will put is super attractive but seeing all the elevated road that were built in NCR so far are just very ordinary. For me if we want to make the NCR an attractive Capital we need to start the redevelopment around the Pasig river. Most of the famous and beautiful Capital City in the world has river system but has no elevated expressway. Proponent said that it will cut the travel time from around 2 hrs to just 20 mins. but is there an actual necessity for that or napakarami ba ang nagtatravel from manila to taguig and vice versa? That should be the subject of the study. Yung EDSA super traffic na ulit ngaun kahit na gumagana na ang skyway stage 3. Ang nakikita kong purpose nito ay para maikonek ang Makati CBD at BGC sa Bulacan airport. Sana gawin na lang nilang subway sa ilalim ng river.

Going back to this documentary, finally PAREX won't continue. Salamat po sa bawat isa na kumilos para kumontra, kundi dahil sa inyo tuluyan na sanang masisira yung ilog. Hopefully ma develop pa lalo yung Ferry Service para lalo ito matangkilik ng mas maraming commuter. Salamat sa mga bumubuo ng Ferry Service.

For me i think the best and alternative way for it is, to improve river transport system like providing more comfortable and modern ferries for commuters and tourist as well just like in Bangkok, In Thailand then developed the river sides plant more trees and put esplande for people to relax, walks, jogs and meditating along the river. these will attract more tourist and business opportunities along the river unlike PAREX project only private cars would benifits on it.
18:13 they said building an additional highway can ease the traffic in manila. That’s not true. These rivers can be use to ease or help with the traffic. Like in Venice for instance, they use their river to travel around the city. We Filipino just need to learn to respect our river and help each other to clean it and use it wisely. We don’t need to build an infrastructure that can and will ruin the environment. These governments need to think widely. They can create a underground roads or make the river as a road of transportations. No need to destroy the environment. Why spend billions of pesos which this country don’t have if us the citizens can help each other build a transportations using the rivers or canals. Just clean after yourself. It’s 2023 changed up.

I recently stayed in Manila for an extended period and was looking for an alternative method of transport, to get to Intramuros from Makati. Unfortunately the Valenzuela Ferry Station was closed on the day. I really hope that Pasig River is cleaned up because I think transport by ferry would not only offer a good alternative mode for local citizens, but it could also serve as an alternative mode of transport for tourists - as it could offer tourists a novel way of commuting through Manila. When I was walking alongside Pasig River it definitely smelt very polluted and wasn't nice at all. I really do hope that the river is cleaned up and there is consideration to invest in improving the riverside along the river at certain parts, perhaps include things such as public gardens or social spaces where people can gather and relax with a nice garden of local plants. Pasig River could be a real asset for locals and tourists. In Australia, we have many cities with waterways, and these are seen as important assets, so there is real effort to ensure that they remain clean and the banks of the waterways aesthetically pleasing so locals and tourists can experience pleasant scenery.

Napaka importante ng Ilog Pasig tapos lalagyan lang ng expressway na ang makikinabang lang naman ung mga may sasakyan (na pwedeng dumaan). Mas maigi pang damihan ang ferry at mga terminal nito, pwede ngang hanggang Rizal at Laguna dahil kung maaalala nyo sa diary ni Rizal, dito sya nasakay mula Calamba hanggang Maynila. Iniisip lang nila yung band aid solution. Kung ako kay Mr. Ang, mamuhunan sya sa Ferry system byaheng Manila to Laguna.

Excited pa mandin sana sumakay sa ferry from Hulo to Escolta, pero kailangan magpalista ka pala dahil sa queue system from Pasig. Nagtataka sya bakit konti lang ang byahe ng ferries, dahil it would make a lot of sense na gamitin ang river system to travel. Binabaybay nya ang kahabaan ng Mandaluyong side ng Pasig River. Ang isa sa paborito nyang lugar sa atin ay Intramuros. Sana ay pag aralin ng mabuti bago magtayo ng expressway sa ibabaw nito.

Ilang malaking projects na ba ang dumaan na nagsasabi na sila ay makakabuti ng lumalalang traffic sa NCR. Skyway 1, Skyway 2, Skyway 3, NLEX connector. Bumuti ba ang sitwasyon ng traffic? Tama si sir urban planner. Hindi solusyon ang magpaluwag, magdagdag o gumawa ng mga bagong kalsada, very short term lang ang ganansya dyan kasi dadating ang panahon, dadami nanaman ang mga taong may sasakyan at sila din ang dadaan ang sa mga bagong kalsada na yan. Focus na dapat sa pagpapaganda ng mga trabaho at resources sa mga karatig lugar ng Maynila, para di na nagsisiksikan ang mga tao dyan. Yan lang naman ang problema, hindi kalsada.

Continue to clean up and revive the Pasig River. Use it like how the past Filipinos used it before. The revival of the Pasig River is important to the redevelopment, and for the best of Metro Manila our Capital Region, and for the best for The Philippines our beloved country.
Yung traffic sa Ortigas Extension, kayang kaya sana mabawasan kung talagang ipupush ang ferry system around Laguna Lake, Manggahan Floodway, Marikina River at Pasig River.
Did they think na ang dami ng sasakyan ngayon ay ganun pa din ang dami sakaling maitayo ang PAREX bridge. Sa pagusad ng taon mas lalong dadami ang mga sasakyan kung kayat sa taon na matapos ang proyektong ito ay siguradong dagdag traffic na naman ito. Hindi nito masusulusyunan ang trapiko not unless hindi naagdaragdag ng sasakyan simula ngayon.

Hindi pako nakapunta ng mga bansang may magagandang public transport system, pero kung hindi ako nagkakamali, walang expressway sa mga ilog sa europa. Also, nun nagtayo sila ng skyway, nagttrapik pa rin naman sa skyway. Paano kaya naging solution sa heavy traffic ang panibagong expressway kung daang libo ang nabebenta na bagong sasakyan buwan buwan?
