This is a vlog of my eight day, seven night trip to the North Maine Woods. Part one covers the first four days as I leave the pavement and make my way from the entry at the 20 Mile Checkpoint near Pittston Farms to Leadbetter Falls, Caucomgomac Lake, and Spider Lake.
The North Maine Woods is located in the upper northern region of Maine and includes over 3.5 million acres of wilderness. It includes the well-known Northeast rivers of St. John and the Allagash famous for back county canoeing. Although this land is primarily owned by private forest owners, who make their living from the woods, they have teamed up with state government agencies to use and protect this beautiful Maine natural resource.
For a fee, the area is open to the public for daily entry and camping.

Wow Richard that was very nice to say. I will only be doing them when I go on a major trip. 2020 was a COVID bust. Right now I have one planned for Spring so hopefully after that.

Pretty common to drive 50 miles and never see anyone. Makes you realize if you have trouble your on your own. Can't rely on navigation from satellites either. Roads come and go quicker then the updates.

Nicely done video, I will subscribe. I love northern Maine, my wife and I just did 3 nights camping at Lily Bay State Park north of Greenville, beautiful campground, had wonderful weather. My favorite area to camp.

Awesome videos. I was just up there in August. Stayed at the Pittston Farm a couple nights and then camped 2 nights in the north woods. We did the whole golden road and explored some side trails around Penobscot Lake looking for a campsite. We ran into a retired trooper and his wife a couple times and they warned us one of the sites around there were occupied by some shady characters. So we ended up camping at Ledbetter falls, so it’s cool we have that in common. Beautiful site. It’s cool that everyone we met out there was nice and it seemed like people were looking out for each other. We played it safe since we had two little ones onboard but we’re planning to explore more next year

Ah Pittston farms definitely a place to avoid on a Saturday afternoon last time I was there there must have been 500+ people there and then you can guess what happened that’s right they ran out of gasoline! Made it to North east carry on fumes yes it’s always an adventure in Maine!

Some of your side trips are due to choice of mapping . I Strongly suggest you heat a Maine Sportsman’s bible, ( atlas/ gazateer) company would be DeLorme . Unfortunately when Garmin bought out DeLorme they decided to stop production. So you will need to find an older copy. DeLorme was bought out because their GPS/ Satellite products were superior. Most of the roads are not marked. Many times their are new roads built by the logging companies that are not on anyone’s map.I usually spend at least two nine day periods lost in the Northwoods. My set up is different than yours , full size pickup with a cap, allows me to keep gear dry, 4- 6 gallon cans of gas. Canoe on truck racks and 14’ boat and motor on a trailer. Tent, sleeping gear , food and cooking gear in the truck bed . I use modern coolers , Yeti and Cabela’s , no need to go get more ice for the entire trip out. Tires on my truck and trailer are ten ply, I also bring a patch kit and a small 12 volt compressor. Two come alongs and a thirty foot length of tow chain. I set up a base camp for several days or sometimes the whole time. Then I make outings to other places to fish or sight see.. didn’t see what you were using for lures, but try some copper or brass super duper’s , silver and blue spoons , gold and orange, copper and red spoons. Brand does not seem to matter. Keep exploring. Also keep in mind a lot of the road names have Canadian roots Boulet ( boo-ley). Happy trails . If I see you in my travels up north I stop in and say hello!

I think that Maine is one of the most beautiful states in the nation: back in the '80's, I worked on a crew planting trees for Scott Paper Co. (which owns most of the northern part of the state)- we drove, pulling our camper trailers, 70 MILES on gravel roads to get to our work site. Spent a week in the middle of absolute nowhere.....

Scott Paper hasn't owned any Maine timberlands since 1998. They sold to Plum Creek.

QQ: Does the rooftop tent kill you MPG? I have a Gladiator and was thinking about getting one also did you need lockers in Maine or just 4x4 I only have a sport model without lockers.
@graybeardnomad5302
@graybeardnomad5302 10 месяцев назад
Kevin, never needed lockers and most roads you don’t even need 4wd. As for the RTT I honestly don’t know since it has been on the Jeep from the beginning. 1 mpg reduction is what I have always heard.

any flat tires from the shale on the roads ? Nice video !!

Hey, I was just up there in august and did about 200 miles of dirt road driving in that area. No flats. But I certainly wouldn’t do it without a full size spare. I was checking out of a campground in milinocket before my journey into the woods and the guy asked where I was headed (Golden Road area). His first question: “Do you have a spare?” I said “I have two actually” (I was testing the viability of carrying a 2nd spare for a future trip to Canada.) and he says “good. You might need both!”.

Quesiton: could you traverse the North maine woods from south end to the very top near Canadian border in a day and half?
@graybeardnomad5302
@graybeardnomad5302 3 года назад
Tim, I am assuming you mean to Estcourt Checkpoint. Honestly I would be guessing as I haven't traveled that far north. Although looking at the NWM map it seems doable by mileage, I do not know the road quality and therefore the speed of travel. Also fuel might be another issue that requires you to leave the NMW to refill and this might detour you. The main logging roads are faster and more direct but also not very scenic. I found the water ways to be the most scenic and impressive and that required getting off the main logging roads. Happy travels!

@@graybeardnomad5302 Hi Thanks! when you say water ways, are you talking about the algadesh area specficially?
@Ian-ex3de
@Ian-ex3de 3 года назад
Yes you could. But you'd want to plan your fuel wisely. You can enter the 20 mile checkpoint, navigate North. Your problem navigation wise will be crossing the St. John since may get to the Escourt Road, it will be smooth sailing. Then you will turn back and exist the Little Black Gate in Allagash. It's totally doable if you start in the morning in Rockwood and plan to exit the woods the following late-morning/afternoon at the Little Black.

All this driving, how many miles? And where did you get gas?
@graybeardnomad5302
@graybeardnomad5302 3 года назад
Honestly not really that much, a little over 400 if I added my Gaia routes up correctly. Only one gas stop while in the NMW up in Ashland. I had to leave the woods and go into town for that.
