Triple and quadruple pendulums at almost the same starting position

Javier Guallart

In each visualization are 5 pendulums with a small difference in only the last angle. It can be seen how chaotic these systems are. The equations are obtained with the Euler-Lagrange equation, and the animation is made in Processing.
Code, equations and data. Quintuple pendulum equations are also included in the repository, but it took too much to animate.

I just had an amazing idea: Step 1: Run a simulation like this one. Step 2: Get some neat 3D models of birds, or faries, or dragonflies or something. Step 3: Link the models' positions each to their own triple (or quadruple) pendulum, with each model being the end of it's pendulum. Step 4: Animate the models to appear flying and add background details like land rushing past and clouds. It would look super cool, like they're flying together as a team; swooping up and down, side to side. I'd love to see something like that!

@magistricalbeats253

For those who don't know, this is basically an example of the Butterfly Effect. There's plenty about that on RU-vid but in short it means that a small change in the initial position can impact the trajectory by a LOT as can be seen here. The ∆0 (where 0 = Theta = Angle in Radeon) is the angle difference between each line which is very very tiny (0.001) Yet that tiny difference makes a huge impact later!

There's a symbolic nature to these pendulums I feel is important for self reflection. The frequency of our lives in relation to others can be aligned at first, but the slight misalignments, the intricate details of our ebb and flow allow us to play by our own rhythms. We come and go on our own journeys to make something wild, yet beautiful to behold. So let's make these fleeting and unpredictable lives worthwhile.

Did you use explicit time integration or implicit time integration? Which method? The choice of method and the discretization scheme can greatly affect the result. Compare, for instance logistic map to logistic equation, where the former is discretized version of the latter by 1st order explicit forward Euler scheme, causing (beautiful) numerical issues.

This shows the theory of the smallest common denominator. A principle in mechanics that can be seen all throughout nature. It shows that prime numbers are inherently linked to the fabric of the universe, as pi links them all through relationships hidden in the irrational plane. Jk, you know what this is actually about. It's actually crazy to think about how this applies to life - the slight change in position of the pendulum is analogous to minor decisions you have made in your life becoming hugely impactful in the future. Imagine if you decided to skip breakfast one day, or leave one minute later, or even breathe an extra breath...one scenario could have led you to become a billionaire while the other could mean you end up dead. How in control are you really? The butterfly effect.

Its about uncertainty, it proves that you cannot for certain predict the future (like weather f.ex.) because small even unmeasurable differnces in the start position add up over time and create chaos. This experiment is an answer to a relatively old qustion so we may assume that to be common sense.
