Most anvils, over time, came with unfinished, unhardened, painted horns. The finished horn is a more modern phenomenon. I have the same anvil in black, which is a bit harder, but pretty much the same. People tend to use balls that are too big for a rebound test. It really should be no more that a half inch. Otherwise the mass of the ball can dent even a hard surface. That lowers the rebound, and of course, gives some dents. Other than the weird Prichal hole (I never spell that right) it’s pretty damn good, particularly for the price. The horn is steel, as it’s one solid casting.

For the price, it is clearly superior to HF. My forging buddy has one and is pretty happy with it, but we've wondered about that odd round hole, which seems to serve no useful purpose. His horn dents pretty easily, as you noted.
@TyrellKnifeworks
@TyrellKnifeworks Год назад
Yeah, that round hole is a mystery indeed. The face on this anvil is actually wider than my hay budden so it's perfect for knife makers. I may get a few more of these for myself at this price!

I think the round hole is for an extension to pass through if you wanted to bolt it down with the holes that are cast in the base.
@TyrellKnifeworks
@TyrellKnifeworks Год назад
@@Jesse_was_here But you'd never bolt down an anvil this way. You want to be able to use the step for forging. Having that hole there in front of the step is a problem already for that purpose. It's kind of a silly thing that hole and worse, it's placement.

Next time you do this test try a magnetic square to hold the ruler still. STILL being the operative word. From what I could see the Vevor anvil had about 1" less rebound than the antique.
@TyrellKnifeworks
@TyrellKnifeworks Год назад
Yeah I didn’t notice I was pulling the ruler away. Even if it was an inch lower (which I don’t think it was), that’s still excellent rebound for an anvil that costs $240. Thanks for watching.

Maritime knife supply sucks. They’re overpriced and they don’t have “hydraulic presses” on their website like you say. If anyone is actually looking for extremely high quality presses, belt grinders, or any tool you can dream I can make it for you, I’m a machinist.
@TyrellKnifeworks

On your original anvil you kept the ruler in place the entire ball bearing drop and you could see how high it bounced. With the vevor anvil you pulled the ruler away every time right after the bounce and it was not possible to see how high it really bounced. Not really a good comparison.

I bought the smaller 66lb one and it was 150 delivered free, been beating on it for a while and its got no real problems. Not that I do a huge amount of forging, but I do a bit of it and don't really need anything fancy for an anvil, I'm a knife maker and not an architectural blacksmith or anything! @TyrellKnifeworks
@TyrellKnifeworks Год назад

@@TyrellKnifeworks My anvil stand is much the same as the one you built except with sleepers. Found cleaning up the holes with a power file does the trick rather than a hand file or die grinder. Also the holes line up with the holes in the mount so a couple of 5" wood bolts and washers will secure it to the block a bit more elegantly than the strapping- throw on a couple of welding magnets and the ringing is gone completely.
@jamesafseth326
@jamesafseth326 Год назад
I've got a 110 lb version of this anvil, made by the same Chinese manufacturer (from princess auto in Canada...same as harbor freight in USA) the hole in the horn serves as a method to access a bolt to hold the front of the anvil down, as well as being a pritchel hole...on my 110 lb anvil the hardy hole is really in an inconvenient location, since the anvil is shorter than the 130 lb one you reviewed...but you get what you pay for...as for the construction of the anvil, I believe these anvils are solid cast steel, not a cast iron horn, with a machined face
@TyrellKnifeworks
@TyrellKnifeworks Год назад
Well, there's lots of reasons that hole is dumb. You don't need to hold down the anvil with a bolt and no other anvils have that. It also renders the step unusable because you've got this huge hole right there where you'd be putting work to actually use the step. Next, a pritchel hole is supposed to be 3/8" not an 1" in diameter. This anvil is not cast steel. The horn is certainly soft but the face is hard. It looks like cast iron with a hardened plate on the face. Their website is throwing around terms like "cast steel" and "drop forged" but it is cast + steel on top for sure. Still an excellent deal at the price. Even without the horn at all, this is a great anvil given the size of the face.
@TyrellKnifeworks
@TyrellKnifeworks Год назад
I must correct myself. This anvil IS indeed cast steel. I'm not sure how the differentially hardened the face but not the horn or other areas. Maybe they are just quenching the face somehow.

I actually currently use one of these as a temporary replacement for my vintage anvil that needs an edge repaired and for the money they are great options but you failed to look at the most common issue with all of the Vevor anvils and that’s casting defects. Now if you flipped it over and used a stick welding chipping hammer and pecked at the belly between the legs it is almost certain that you would have found large voids in the casting that they hide with cheap Bondo. These casting flaws can be smaller on some anvils and on others will actually go from one foot all the way across the belly to the other foot and these flaws can be repaired with some welding work but it does take substantial time and effort
@TyrellKnifeworks
@TyrellKnifeworks Год назад
If those were noticed, I'd just contact the company. They'd send you a new one. I experienced no such issues with this one and I've been hammering on the surface quite a bit and its solid. Given the price, you can't expect perfection. These are 1/3 the price of my other anvil so it's still a great value. Thanks for watching.

@@TyrellKnifeworks I didn’t notice mine until after the 30 day return period and the company wouldn’t even answer me back then. They hide those defects with Bondo and paint, Christ Centered Ironworks did videos on the issue and that’s how I knew where to look

Ah ok, I did watch that but I guess I FF'd past that part. I did look at mine and saw no such issues. Like he said in the video, there are likely a range of qualities on these. For $260 its still a deal. His video wailing on the anvil with a 10 and 16lbs sledge pretty much confirms that. 👍🏻

I have a slightly smaller version of that anvil. I really like it (much better than the railroad track piece I was using before), but I do wish the hardy hole or the pritchett hole was bigger. I have trouble trying to drift tomahawk eyes big enough, so I default to using the bench vise instead of the anvil. Other than that, is been a good anvil though. Someday I'll upgrade to a full-size anvil.
@TyrellKnifeworks
@TyrellKnifeworks Год назад
I think the hardy hole is pretty standard size though. That large round hold boggles me a bit.. not sure what that's for. A pritchel hole should be 1/2" I believe. This one is certainly a great deal for an anvil though. Thanks for watching.
