Triple-Tape Take-Two (Repair & Demo)

Back in the 80's when we were 'backing up' Commodore 64 games on tape, we always found that high speed dubbing was much more successful than normal speed. I never knew why but my guess now is that the wow and flutter would be much lower because less torque is needed on the motors and they could run more steadily.

My Auntie is a dance instructor in Okinawa. She has the same tape player! She told me before she started using cd’s she used this player for her studio not only to play dance music but to also copy for her students to take home. She has now either converted those tapes on to CD or asked the record company to send her a cd remaster. Thought i would share.

Great video when I saw the thumbnail of the radio I clicked on it. This radio reminds me of the dual tape player/radio that I had as a teen, it was White, Slim with two tape decks and had all kinds of neat features on it. Unfortunately it was robbed from me as a teen and haven't seen it in years this video brought back some great memories thanks.

I have one issue with you in that you often deprecate your skills sir. I think you are very technically minded and while not a factory trained technician you are immensely competent. That high-speed dubbing was a lifesaver back in the day when you had to make copies of your mixtapes for friends.

As a child, I loved using high-speed dubbing to rips tapes. I also used it on occasion to copy ZX Spectrum/Amstrad game cassettes though they were prone to fail unless copied on normal speed.

Oh my goodness this video is GOLD. I recently unearthed my old 80’s lavender Panasonic boom box from my mom with hopes of giving it to my kid. But upon trying it out, it had a rattle aaaand it ate a tape. I took a stab at fixing it, found those exact pieces floating around (except the conical spring…) but the belts are clean and in tact! It has the same Tanashin mechanism, just a different motor placement. Your video now explains why my clutch gear wouldn’t spin! Hope I can find that spring and repair the split plastic cap, or I’ll be reaching for the superglue to mimic the sad solution of those cheap knockoffs … unless you’ve still got spares to spare?? Short story, this is the most satisfying RU-vid video I’ve ever watched. Thank you!!

The reason behind the better Speed and WOW/Flutter Values are more of plain physical nature rather than electrical. These closed servo motors are designed to withstand slow and medium voltage chanes and drifts. The motor won't spin any slower unless the supplied voltage is very low (6V or so). That's why many decks continue playing normally with bad batteries till the end, and then fail very fast in just a few minutes. The motor will draw more current when voltage is not availiable until both is not given anymore. Plus the flywheel to compensate for slight changes in torque. For the better speed value of the copy, that's simple. A recording recorded on fast playing tape will sound slow on normal machines and vice versa. Too slow recorded, plays too fast. Now D1 was 2% up and D3 1%, that's -1% Speed. As seen on The meter. For wow and flutter it's even simpler. More speed, less friction, less hick ups from the mechanism. There isn't that much electrical about the mechanism. Unless one starts to mess with the record path and BIAS. This can get out of hand quickly. Still, great that everything went so smoothly.

GREAT video ... no stupid gimmicks ... just straight foreword tech repair ... that three deck looks in great condition never seen one before so got my attention as have several of your other cassette machines. As an electro / mechanical engineer myself I am always looking to learn from other people ... never to old to learn. Sadly that build quality from Japan is no longer there with equipment made in other countries now days ... thanks for sharing your skills.

As someone who did stereo repair, in and out of warranty starting in 89. Ive done that repair a million times. Lucky for u it was just plastic split rings on the flywheel. More expensive units some times had metal E rings. Those things are a eye hazard and u never find them again in a shop environment when they go pop. U just have to have spares, but good job on the repair. Brought back memories, learn something new every day i always say.

So happy it works now. It'll look perfect at a picnic or something

I like this tape deck.You love it when everything comes together.Had a few repairs that went so well and most were simple and blind luck helps. Had a belt less dual tape deck and the one would not work.After awhile of trial and error I was ready to call it a day. I was picking it up off the counter and landed hard.I tested it to make sure no damage. Deck 1 that I thought didn't work started working. Blind Luck a happy accident caused it to work. It worked for years after that.I only paid $25.00 dollars for it.Until next time 🙂😎.

I’m not a repair expert but I have an ultrasonic cleaner at home and whenever there is something small or annoying or hard to clean I just drop it in and it does a great job, I wonder if such a cleaner could save you from doing so much manual labor in the future. Great work on those Tanashin mechanisms! I've done a similar work with both decks of my Panasonic RX-CT 800 boombox that also uses Tanashin mechanisms but with the improved "full autostop" feature. Belts turned to goo so there was no fast forward or rewind and the automatic shut off always tripped as soon as a function was activated. The most annoying thing was cleaning that black goo from the pulleys and capstans.

You've really inspired me over the last few weeks. Since watching your videos, I've replaced the belts on my Sony HTC-NX1 tape deck, as they had stretched after 19 years of use, and also fixed my Panasonic RQ CW05 personal stereo after the belts stretched on that. Time to get some cassettes out to play on it!

Love your channel to bits, clean and simple! Have been a hifi and music enthusiast ever since I inherited my dad's hifi equipment when I was ten. Father succumbed to pulmonary cancer at the ripe old age of 35, God rest his soul, but his legacy lives on.

I had a two-deck player that COULD play two tapes at the same time. I'd amuse myself by playing the same song on both and see how they would go out of phase slowly.

I remember when i was a teenager, the guy i used to buy my mixtapes off of had a boombox with 2 tapedecks that held 2 tapes in each deck for a total of 4 cassettes...

And a busted "bugger to access while running" motor speed control is why I had to put a zener across it to slow down an over eager drive. This was back in my early impatient teens where replacing the motor pot would be too much work. It was a sony though. These things are so much fun to tinker, I hope they come back harder.

My theory on why the High-Speed dubbing produced better results is because the flywheels are simply spinning at a higher speed, which allow them to conserve more energy and therefore better regulate the speed of the tape. Great video, keep up the great work.
