I recently sold that last book from a collection I bought in 2022. Let's go over the costs, profit, and time involved to see, was it really worth it?
I hope you enjoy, and I'll continue posting more content weekly!

I have an Ebay store and I take pride in the way I package the book (s). Me personally (as a buyer on Ebay also) I think that one of Feedback categories should be "Safe and Secure Packaging".

I'm always thankful when I have a seller that does more than put the book in a mailer😊

@@justinmyers5209I sell books and ship them in LP album mailers. They’re a little bigger and sturdier. People comment how much they like them. Highly recommended

I agree. Been buying on ebay since '08 and I've had my share of awful sellers. My most recent purchase worth $100-plus came in a couple of hours ago, unsleeved wrapped in buuble wrap (not even taped), in an oversized box.

I'm on the east coast and was interested in a book and the seller was in the Canary Islands. $50 shipping seemed high (international, air shipping , I don't know), but he assured me he was a pro. This was a 1 of 1 top of census, Pedigree label 1940s book and my heart sank when I saw the box size and was sure I had been scammed. He packed the slab in bags, bubble wrap, foam, egg crate, and then, finally inside of a plastic tool box that was the size of a short box. Went totally above and beyond to assure safe transport across the ocean. I wish there was a way to relay the superior job he did to raise his reputation further. #SilverAgeSucker

Thanks for sharing this. I’ve sold stuff on eBay and totally agree - I pack this the way I’d want to receive it. I’ve received good feedback on the care of packaging! I’ve also started to take your hourly rate approach to mind. I’ve picked up some higher priced key issues to hopefully turn around and get that rate up. Thanks as always, Ryan!

I appreciate you sharing with us your financial thinking on buying a collection. From my experience you are being very conservative on your time estimates for listing and shipping but maybe you are a badass!

Nice breakdown. Also bought a collection and it was 2 years before I got my money back out and started seeing a profit. Kept the top 10 books (ASM14, etc) from the collection though so worked out. But it’s a long road. Have to keep grinding; each sale counts.

Wow Ryan, i think you aren’t counting your time as an expense! I learned to do that long ago so dealing with one larger sale than 100s of low price. I know spec gives and takes. You can also count the rev for this vid. Thanks for sharing the costs and profits. Many don’t. I let all your ads run through to help…

Listing and packing are easily two of the biggest time-consuming activities. Another one I’d throw in there is accounting. Since I’m doing cash method - having to keep track of what I bought, where I bought it, how much I bought it for, if it was part of a lot - sometimes it’s a nightmare.
@AutomaticComics

I use a spreadsheet for all of mine. I can definitely see where if it’s a really big collection, it could be really difficult to track.

I’m sorry to go off topic but it seems the whole comic industry is buzzing right now, thanks to your research. Any further thoughts or developments about the apparent comic deception ?
@AutomaticComics
@AutomaticComics 7 месяцев назад
Definitely not just from what I’ve found. Lots of people have helped find different issues with this sellers books. I haven’t made any other videos since it feels like most of the information is out there now, and it would just be kind of rage baiting people, which I don’t have any interest in doing. Maybe I’ll make something if cgc ever responds. That’s what I think most of us want at this point.

@@AutomaticComics , yes, I agree, thanks again for your investigation, the industry and community really are in great controversy.
@shepherdsknoll
@shepherdsknoll 7 месяцев назад
@@AutomaticComics , it seems CGC will not address this debacle, I would imagine the liability is too great, maybe their legal entity has decided to wait for law suits to come in and do battle in court, it seems they will not even try to fix their slabs as this could be construed as an act of guilt, instead they will hold up whatever disclaimer they created to go with the slab. It seems the real victims of this debacle will be the holders of very high priced books that could be fakes, before buying any high priced book ( or books that fit the profile for fraud) the buyer would require an examination of the slabbed book, I know I would, but then there is no 3rd party to establish a grade to base a value on - pretty much a big mess.

I didn't see federal taxes, which would take away 15-20% of your profit. Just sayin
@AutomaticComics
@AutomaticComics 7 месяцев назад
That doesn’t take away your profit. That’s on your profit. The profit statement is correct. That’s what would be reported on my taxes (which it is). If someone makes 100k per year, they don’t say they make $75k because of taxes. They still say they make 100k per year. Your pay rate per hour is your pay rate per hour regardless of taxes.
@martin_wilson81
@martin_wilson81 7 месяцев назад
@@AutomaticComics exactly, so you will have to pay taxes on your profit, which depending on your bracket and a lot of other factors, could easily force you to pay 15-20% of said profit to uncle sam. It's just something I factor in when determining how much profit I'm actually making, thanks to the new tax laws, which is why I quit selling online altogether
