@@Danimal77 Yes and no. I don't think that's really what it is, though it can come across that way on the surface. If I had given a serious reply earlier, instead of the peyote joke, then I would have expressed how it seems like the way she makes associations in her head is very adnormal to the average person. Like she takes the inherent 5 sense that people have and melds them together or just straight-up, in her head, registers something through 1 of those senses that typically would be analyzed through a different sense. It's the way her own personal head and thinking makes associations and draws comparisons between two things. I'll try and give some basic examples, although taking a hallucinogenic would probably make you understand as well lol, the way her brain works and draws comparisons that is. Some of her 5 senses are seemingly cobbled together and work in tandem with each other to draw correlations. Examples: seeing sounds/music, feeling music, and hearing visuals. It seems like everything that stimulates one of her five senses also stimulates at least one of the other 5 senses simultaneously which produces her unusual comparisons and anologies.

The music of this time period was when there were psychodelics being used so the music was trippy. You could enjoy the music without the use of drugs. It was just a good song when you were hanging out with friends. Lex is right many songs talk about little girl that is what they called young women. My husband still says it sometimes and we have been married 40 years. It is not meant to be offensive or not used to talk about an inappropriate relationship.

Idk, when I found out about "the club" and selling yourself out by doing inconceivable things to little ones to become and stay relevant, I get turned off by phrases like that. My naive self didn't have a problem with it but now I wonder if, and how deep, singers/bands/celebrities etc. are in it. 😏
@SwiggityPeanut

@@lmdashley6725 realistically though thats probably such a small group of people relative to the entire category. thats how humans are. theres, like you said, a small exclusive club and then theres the ones who know but dont care, the ones that do care and the majority dont even know. So reading too much into things isnt gonna help our own mental health in the long run. Until theres verified evidence that so and so is doing such and such, its conjecture. Thats how we end up with "witch hunts" so to speak, just looking for stuff where its not always actually found.

I am sure that plenty of folks took the magic carpet ride with a variety of different substances, but the vocalist is straight forward: "Close your eyes, girl, look inside, girl, let the sound take you away!" Then the band provides the sound and the opportunity for the listener to literally close their eyes, look inside themselves and allow the sound of that trippy instrumental to let their minds soar uninhibitedly.

Well . . . Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin did have a 14 year old groupie that he would hook up with whenever he was in LA in the early 70s. Well documented as she and another woman wrote a book in recent years describing their groupie experiences (and no regrets on their part). Also older bluesmen had songs like Sonny Boy Williamson's "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl". Age old theme. Not saying that's what Steppenwolf is singing about, but it was a more common theme back then. Of course filmmaker Roman Polanski, after his wife Sharon Tate was brutally killed by the Manson family, did have a sexual experience (assault?) with a young 13 year old girl. He was given a light sentence and before the judge could change his mind, left the country, and hasn't returned to the US since. Same era. So Polanski is forever wanted in the US, while Jimmy Page is celebrated. Strange times back then.

At some point in the 1980s I heard a retro oldies radio interview with John Kay, leader of Steppenwolf, who you hear singing on this song. When discussing "Magic Carpet Ride" he stated that the band was flush with cash after the success of their first big hit, "Born To Be Wild." So one of the first things he did with his first royalty check from that song was go out and buy a huge stereo system, take it home, hook it up and play his vinyl albums. This song is about the joy of listening to music and the places it can transport you to when you do.

I remember, I'm from LA. John may have been smoking a little kaya one night, but he was surely laying on the floor listening to music coming from both speakers near his head. The late 60’s and 70’s was a major turning point in recordings. More tracks available, stereo recordings used more instead of mono, synths being used more. So a lot was experimental in of itself, let alone adding drugs to it.

Another great Canadian band l grew up with in the late 60’s. Along with April Wine and Rush we had the best music to listen too. 🇨🇦🎁👍

I saw Steppenwolf and Iron Butterfly together in 1969. I was 15 and smoking a pipe packed with some great stuff, 20 feet away from the stage. Every song was longer. This song, Born To Be Wild, Rock Me Baby and The Pusher, then IRON BUTTERFLY.... Extended long.....In-A-Gada-Da-Vida for 45 minutes.......AWESOME

Brad it's not about one or the other, it's both. Riding the sonic wave of sound while tripping is the journey you take while you are high. Your response to listen to it again later was exactly right. Another song that transports you this way is Neil Young's LIKE A HURRICANE. These songs are setup to direct you along a soundscape to be free to wander with music, wherever that might be. It's called tripping for a reason. I think you might finally be coming around to it. We were alot more open and free back then, Brad. Just enjoy the trip, man.

John Kay & Steppenwolf = the best of psychedelia
@rogerthat9306
@rogerthat9306 2 года назад
Interesting - Brad pretty much nailed it. John Kay said he wrote that song one night when he was listening to his stereo. Back in the day everybody had systems with huge speakers and that's what he was talking about... "I like to dream, yes, yes right between the sound machine"... He was literally talking about his stereo system - standing between the speakers enjoying the music. "On a cloud of sound I drift in the night, any place it goes is right..." letting the music just take him wherever.

Acid for sure baby … I was there on the magic carpet in the early 70’s with them
@docwatson8848
@docwatson8848 2 года назад
The song is about an acid trip during the psychedelic era most songs had hidden lsd meanings, ie.. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Most psychedelic songs have link to acid tripping and influences to music and album cover , many examples Sargent Peppers and Yellow Submarine albums by the Beatles, Creams Disraeli Gears and Steppenwolf first album. I know most young people missed albums and their cover art. I love you guys and your reactions, I was a teen in California when the “British Rock Invasion “ happened and many back stories miss a lot of the deeper meaning that only living it tells. Keep doing your amazing work that is reviving some of the foundation of rock and roll that have roots going back to songs slaves sang working in the fields.
