As the name suggests, trisomy is when there are 3 copies of a specific chromosome, instead of just 2. This is known as a aneuploidy, which means there is an abnormal number of chromosomes. Depending on the degree of severity, the chromosomes can be either completely copied (Full Trisomy), or partially copied (Partial Trisomy).
Trisomy can occur in any chromosome, with Trisomy 21 and Trisomy 18 being the most common. In most cases, when trisomy does arise, it has a high risk of leading to a spontaneous miscarriage within the first trimester. When given birth, this newborn often has birth defects, intellectual disability, short life expectancy, etc. Autosomal Trisomy is considered lethal, and will almost always lead to pregnancy losses. Whereas sex chromosome Trisomy are relatively born relatively healthy and with a normal human life span i.e., Trisomy 21 Down Syndrome (1 in 1000), Trisomy 18 Edwards’s Syndrome (1 in 5000), and Trisomy 13 Patau’s Syndrome (1 in 16000).
The above 3 mentioned conditions have been ordered in ascending order of lethality, meaning Down Syndrome has a low lethality, Edward’s has a moderate lethality and Patau’s is the most lethal and with negligible survival rates. This is due to the number of genes being over-expressed by the trisomy chromosome and the number of genes involved in dosage compensation disruption.
Here at Antai Hospitals, we understand that genetic mutations arise due to the changes in the internal environment of the mother during pregnancy and/or the changes of the external environment during pregnancy. Any negative factors within the internal and external environment that can affect the growth and development of the fetus have the risk of causing the chromosomal abnormality. Of course, the primary risk still revolves around the increased age of the mother.
