Tristes apprêts, pâles flambeaux” from the the opera Castor et Pollux
by Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764)
Véronique Gens with Les Talens Lyriques under Christophe Rousset
Télaïre’s lament for the death of Castor
~ Libretto by Pierre-Joseph Bernard (1708-1775)
Sad preparations, pales torches,
daylight more dreadful than darkness,
mournful stars of the tombs,
no - I shall see only your funeral glow.
You who see my overwrought heart,
father of the day, o Sun, O my father!
I have no with to enjoy what Castor has lost,
and so I renounce your light.
~ Translation by Paula Kennedy

Rameau is almost unknown in Italy and, besides, I'm not a musician, so I know very little about his music, but I realized that this is a void to fill. He's quite original for his time regarding to the melodies and the sonorities . There are some germs of ideas that broke out only some generations later, there is something I dare say Wagnerian in this music. Charming, cosmic and shadowy images. Thank you for all this. Have a nice Sunday and put your surgical mask on.

"Tristes apprêts, pâles flambeaux" by madame Gens is THE baroque in all its French tragedy...! What joy, dear Jeffrey, - or rather what tragic and vibrant shivers - you give us to hear, again and again, this air so illustrious and yet composed just as simply by one of the greatest geniuses of Baroque music, Rameau. Arrows of pleasure, caresses of tears, fountains of thanks... H-E DdC (Versailles)

Thank you for this. It is truly extraordinary. Richard strauss quotes Rameau in his final opera, Capriccio. Only discovered Rameau a few years back (les fetes d'hebe) One of the most profound discoveries of my life. I believe Wagner also praised him, and held him in high esteem. Noel 🌹

@@JeffreyStivers thank you. Twenty odd years ago classical music and opera changed my life, for the better, beyond recognition. Although it now makes it rather difficult to socialise with people who do not have the same interests. People don't know what you're talking about, in general. But this is fine. As the writer P. D. Ouspensky once said..... "it is of value because it is not for everyone". Greetings from a balmy London town. Noel

Castor was murdered by Idas, but Pollux killed Lynceus: in retribution, Zeus killed Idas with a thunderbolt. Zeus then gave Pollux the choice between spending all his time on Mount Olympus, or giving half of his immortality to his mortal brother, so that they could alternate realms together. Pollux asked Zeus to let him share his own immortality with his twin, in order to keep them together, and they were transformed into the constellation (and astrology sign) Gemini. The twins represent a dual-natured personality: sometimes contradictory, but also adaptable, with the capability to view life from different angles. May they continue to rule and reign together, enshrined among the stars for all eternity.
