I've had mine 12 months, no stalling issue's, infact no issues at all except from initial engine light which came on because I wasn't starting it properly. It's got bags of character and gets constant comments when parked up. Love it.

That style of engine from Rotax was in the old BMW 650 GS, also the Aprilia Pegaso 650 /The Italians switch to Yamaha 660 engine later/ This bikes are still around and the people enjoy them all over Europe.

Seems you’ve thoroughly enjoyed that. Always exciting when a bike subverts expectations in a good way. Hard to imagine it feeling peppy though with what I’m used to on the 701, but it looks a lot more liveable with, especially when you did that chug test! @@TheSpectre223 Engine light when new but I was pressing start after sweep. You have to wait for engine light to go out. 2 seconds after clocks have swept. Not been on since. Odd cut out but only on down change. I had interceptor. Nice but I prefer low grunt and 5 speed box on bsa. Interceptor was uncomfortable for me at 6ft4. Hoping cut out prob is software update but if not I can live with it. Only does it occasionally. But power is way better than expected. Grunt where I want it. Not interested in going more than 70 anymore. Been there, done that. 😁

thanks for the heads up about the BSA events...I've booked a "ticket" for the Edinburgh ride out...and now just need to work out the logistics of getting there...if I can, it should be amazing [surly!]...have booked as a reserve which I'm assuming results in 'one' getting a ride on any free bikes within the alloted time slots? Please advise. [will be travelling up from London[istan].
@TheSpectre223
@TheSpectre223 2 месяца назад
Great to hear you'll be checking out the BSA too, I hope you have a good time with it! For the reserve tickets, you should check with them just to make sure, maybe reach out on social media, but that was my understanding too. They have a handful of bikes available, I think there were five or so at the event I went to. People with specific time-slot tickets are allocated bikes for that time, and then anyone with a reserve ticket (or I guess who just turn up on the day) can take out any surplus bikes left over.

Yeah you are right, but visually they appear 'upside down' as the needle sweeps right to left in the lower hemisphere, instead of left to right at the upper. Either way it's a nice call-back to the older bikes, and I didn't find it too hard to adjust to.

I can't wait to acquire one here in Southern California! Although that annoyingly oversized and rather ugly radiator will have to go, and I'm quite certain it can be swapped out for a significantly smaller and less bulky factory Triumph T120 radiator. Maybe someone who's a mechanic can verify that?!

Hmm that would be an interesting mod. I'd have to see the two bikes side by side to appreciate the size difference I think, but if there's a way to reduce the front profile without affecting the efficiency it could be a good upgrade.

My Bonnie was running fine, like I said it was only the perception vs the actual performance. As for it being an older model, well I can only compare to the bikes I have experience with, which in this category is my bike. Used Bonnies are still part of the conversation though because you can get a whole lot for the same price as a new BSA or RE (on autotrader for example, a 2021 liquid-cooled T100 with 10k miles from a main dealer) and they have to compete against those just as much as they do the brand new stuff.

@TheSpectre223 2 месяца назад
Yeah I'm seeing a few people mentioning it now, not ideal for sure. Might need a software patch, or I wonder if you can adjust the idle speed, bring it up a hundred rpm. My Bonnie had a mock fuel mixture screw which let you adjust the idle.
@kasperkjrsgaard1447
@kasperkjrsgaard1447 2 месяца назад
Probably the results from lean and pollutionfree mixture. A clever mechanic with the proper software might be able to fatten up the mixture. Low idle doesn’t help either.

@@kasperkjrsgaard1447 For sure yeah, a lot of bikes these days benefit from an exhaust and remap. Shouldn't be a requirement out the door though, but of course this is a very low mileage demonstrator so I'd imagine a regularly used personal bike might be running a bit more freely.

I am really not a fan of this BSA "revival". Royal Enfield has a direct link to the original Enfields and has been coming up with new models and doing its own R&D etc. This new Gold Star 650 is more akin to the modern Benelli bikes, someone has slapped an old badge on a parts bin bike that utilises bits from various Chinese suppliers. Ignoring that, compared with the Interceptor 650 this thing is a worse value prospect. It's missing a centre stand and the maintenance schedule is still very frequent but also more complex than the Enfield, plus the dealership network is very sparse so good luck if something goes wrong. I will be very surprised if these things stay in production for much longer.
@TheSpectre223
@TheSpectre223 2 месяца назад
Yeah I get where you're coming from with the history, and it would have perhaps been more genuine if they'd invented a new brand for this model range rather than using the BSA name to get them off the ground. Parts bin or not though I think it's a really good bike, and time will tell on reliability and longevity. The lack of centre stand is definitely annoying though; there's no reason for a bike of this genre not to have one. As for dealers, well they have 31 listed in the brochure, across the UK, Ireland and Jersey, so it's not as sparse as you might imagine. These dealers are shared, multi-brand units, like Thors where this event was held, so the quality of dealership support will vary considerably between them. That's true to Royal Enfield too though; they too have mostly shared units and varied quality. I don't think I'd be any more worried about BSA dealers vs RE ones, though I would want to see what the parts availability is with such a new brand.

I like the overall concept, but the detail stuff really lets the side down. I could not live with those clocks. They are the wrong way up. The USB thing I would bin, the rear indicators are ugly. Move them to the back stay of the mudguard. Seats do not have to be vinyl covered planks of wood. I'm looking at it as an urban commuter, so they need to iron out the fuelling to stop those cutouts. Oh, and I need mirrors that work.
@TheSpectre223
@TheSpectre223 2 месяца назад
Yeah a lot of valid points, that USB is crap. I do think if you could invert it, it'd be a lot less obvious, but I'd probably be hiding a smaller one somewhere on the forks. The indicators need to be swapped to a nicer set too, they let the side down. I think it's got bags of potential and just needs that extra 10% of finishing. But then, would you rather they do that and the price goes up a bit, or it stays (relatively) affordable but you have to chuck a hundred quid's worth of universal parts at it? I think it'd be a hoot for commuting beyond that though, the way it delivers the power is good for punchy urban riding, and with the 70mpg and Euro 5 it's a good contender.

A comparison with a 13 year old T100 seems strange. Get yourself on a Shotgun, similar money but way better ride and build quality. Rotax engine is a proven unit and the ride was okay but very vibby. Absolutely no comparison with the current T100 but much cheaper. I don't know what the sales are like but I haven't seen one in the wild.
@TheSpectre223
@TheSpectre223 2 месяца назад
Like I said, I can only compare it to the bikes I have experience with, which in this case is my Bonnie. And it's still a relevant comparison because like when I bought mine, for the price of the BSA or the REs you can get an extremely clean used Bonneville, and they need to compete against those just as much as they do the brand new ones. They're definitely no comparison to a brand new T100, but as you say it's a £2800 saving so you wouldn't expect them to. The used market is harder to beat though, and jumping on Autotrader right now you could get a 2021 liquid cooled Bonnie with 10k miles from an official dealer for the same price as the BSA. Harley has the same issue trying to sell new models and fighting their own used market. As for sales so far, I don't know the figures either but I've seen several out in the world, even one yesterday at a bike night, so they're definitely out there. I would be interested to see the full numbers though.

I'm glad they made this bike, because the more choices people have, the better! But that being said, I wonder if this Goldstar is going to succeed? You see, in America, BSA was never very popular, you know. They probably sold 25 Triumphs in the USA for ever 1 BSA they sold. And that would be the twins, the Goldstar, sold in the USA even less so! The Goldstar was really a British home-market hit in its day. It wasn't popular in the USA. So you aren't going to find very many BSA fans in the USA to begin with, and even fewer who are into Goldstars. Now as you point out , though, in Britain, the cats who dig the vintage Goldstars might not want this bike b/c its not British made and isn't up to super high finishing standards. It's also a "big bike"*premium price bike for the India market, and Enfield and Triumph with the new 400 are very competitive with 'big bike" offerings in India. I think this might be a bike that doesn't find a following. Who knows? If they came out with this bike in 1971, it probably would've saved the company!
@TheSpectre223
@TheSpectre223 2 месяца назад
It's an odd one yeah. You're absolutely right that there's a real risk of not impressing either the old market or the new riders, and being left to fall between the cracks. I hope it does well though, and they've already got a Bobber and Scrambler on the way. The Scrambler in particular I think will do extremely well with this motor, and as Royal Enfield still don't have a scramblerised version of their Interceptor you have a better chance at a market with that. It'll be a decisive couple of years either way though.
@johnnyhall7065
@johnnyhall7065 Месяц назад
See Daytona, the original Gold Star, was almost banned, because it was too successful. BSA didn't discount the bikes as much as Triumph in the USA, they were always made to a set price. Overall, BSAs had a better reputation, especially the pre-unit twins. And the Rocket Three was also a better machine than the Trident.

However, that isn't much different from say an R1, or even more race bred R7 back in the day. When you buy a product like that you should really expect some teething issues, esp back in the 50/60s when machines were temperamental at best anyway.
