I have owned two roadsters and one touring model of the rocket. I totaled my last rocket 3 roadster with all my mods and now I am back on a stock 2017 roadster. Everything you say is absolutely true. As an ex Harley rider, one ride on this bike and I never even thought about riding something else. The only problem I have run into is that when I totaled my '15 roadster I was looking at all kind of bikes and there is "NOTHING" that comes close to this. I was thinking about the Ducati Diavel but still, it felt too small despite the better engine specs. I went right back to the roadster. I commute daily on mine and have gone on long trips and I absolutely love this thing. If you are a motorcycle rider you owe it to yourself to try one of these bikes. Even the touring model of this bike is really nice and one ride will change your mind. Even the Goldwing guys jump off their Honda's and get this bike. If I had one wish, I wish Triumph would come out with an RR version of this bike where they open it up and make it faster and more powerful (i.e... Carpenter racing kit). Or Triumph could do a fully dressed up version of the touring model kind of like the Goldwings where they dress it out, cover the engine and open her up. Imagine a 200+ HP fully dressed rocket for touring or commuting....? Either one would sell like crazy...

Love your comment bro, thank you! I just kinda redid this video, it's up on my channel and I think a link for it pops up at the endd of this video. I have another one im going to do as well, and a 2k mile trip planned... Like you said I LOVE MY ROCKET and I've looked and thought.. I don't think I would choose anything else either. I love the size of it, I fit, a passenger fits, I love it

I rode a Rocket III during a dealer open house about 10 years ago - I was impressed - nothing else quite like it. Just took delivery last month of my new Trophy SE to compliment my Sprint ST (2nd). Great bikes - check dealer rep before you buy.

Great video! I reside on Oahu, and I had no idea how rare these bikes were until I picked up my 2006 Standard used from a USN sailor who was redeploying. I flipped my Honda CBR to get it and haven't looked back, subsequently adding the TOR exhaust, tune, etc. We have *one* HD dealership on Oahu that also sells Triumph, Kawi, Suzuki and Moto Guzzi under the same roof, and they do not keep any Rocket 3s in stock. In speaking with the Asst Mngr, if you want one a special order is required because in his words, "Let's face it, a Rocket 3 is an acquired taste." I also learned my bike is one of only a half dozen R3s known to be on Oahu; two have since left the island and another is for sale cheap on CL. With the large military presence Harleys are "Uber" popular but the 0.0 looks I get when I'm out and about are priceless. Just to show I'm not completely biased, I also own a hardtail Harley short chop I built in my garage in 2003 that is set up with a tank shift, true footclutch (like a car), 21" spool front wheel with no front brake and the throttle moved to the left side handlebar like an old Indian, a legacy of some wicked hand surgery I had on my right hand. It's a completely different ride and I like it like an old friend, but the Rocket 🚀 is in a different universe.

Hey I'm military living in Oahu right now, was looking into buying one and I'll probably have one shipped here from the dealer. I was wondering if we could meet so I could at least see one in person and maybe sit on it to see how it feels before I deside to pull the trigger. Let me know, thank you!

Hay big guy" it's always good to hear you talk about the rocket again, some bike ha, I think so too. I have the 2005 r3 and I went looking for that year because of the silver grey engine, so far so good keeping my fingers crossed at 2700miles so far and all seems well, also did a pc3, cat box delete, and an easy start wire harness also removed the baffles and cut ten inches off exhaust pipes; as soon as the weather changes I will do an oil and spark plug, coolant change, I also replaced the battery with a 320 cranking amp battery, and let me tell you what a beautiful battery, the original battery lasted almost twelve years, can you believe that? I will post a picture soon as my wife shows me how to do it, because although I'm a man of many things, but not all things "LOL" "Be Safe Big Fellow"

Excellent review! Thanks for posting it. A couple comments: 1) The leak you mention is not from the head gasket. In fact, there is no head gasket on a Triumph Rocket III. That's the rocker cover gasket. I may be wrong but I can't think of any reason why a slight leak from that gasket could cause a performance issue just as a rocker cover gasket on a car engine wouldn't cause a performance issue. It would simply leak. Also, Triumph does specify that sealant be put in the corners of the gasket. It's possible that they didn't recommend that in the past but they do now. 2) You go through maintenance issues but I'm surprised that you didn't mention checking valve clearance. That should be checked after the first 10,000 miles and at longer intervals after that. It's a shim over bucket setup. At one time, Triumph had a tool that would allow you to compress the valve springs and change shims without removing the cams. For some reason, that isn't mentioned in the service manual anymore but you can get a tool to do that from independent sources. In fact, I have one. 3) You also didn't mention changing the rear drive oil. That should be done periodically as well. It's so fast and simple and uses such a little amount of gear lube that it makes no sense to NOT do it. That rear drive unit is EXPENSIVE! I change my rear drive lube every time I change the oil and, like you, I change engine oil about every 3,000 miles or so regardless of Triumphs recommendation of 10,000. I'm old school and I'm skeptical of the long oil change intervals. I suspect those recommendations are more to satisfy the EPA than make your engine last longer. Also, even though synthetic oil does hold up much better than petroleum oil, the additives wear out just as they do with conventional oils. 4) You should check and sync your throttle bodies from time to time too. Great bike! I absolutely love mine! I have the Touring model. What a beast!

Promiscuous Deplorable Incel ...the latest Bosch cornering ABS is insane. First used on KTM1190 Adventure bikes, it’s offroad setting is ridiculous, 99% of braking power but never locks up on dirt or gravel, and it’s lean sensitive...don’t know how they do it.

I have been in and out looking for one of these. I never got around to test one. I accedently tested a Moto Guzzi 1200 Sport when I was searching, and haven't been able to part ways yet. but I am saving up now for either a Rocket 3, Vrod or a Vmax 1700 to take when my mood is for it.

David is very articulate and easy to listen to. I enjoyed this review, particularly from an American as they tend to go for Harleys. Of course in N. Carolina (and I've been to Bryan Park) where it''s BAKING HOT it may be great to ride without a screen, but here in Wales (or indeed anywhere in Europe) riding such a bike would be excruciatingly uncomfortable for at least eight months of the year. And in summer one's tunic would be splattered with dead bloody insects! Most everything else looks good subject to a couple of caveats. The exhausts are painfully ugly, and if one buys a monster of a bike it needs to ROAR! Finally, and no-one will argue - this bike is about street cred. Let's be honest - almost 2,300 c.c. is not required in order to produce the output figures quoted. Such being the case it is a contradiction in both terms and image to limit such a niche bike to 130 m.p.h. What about track days when some of us enjoy a blast? David spoke of the possibility of taking the limiter off. A biker can't do it himself these days as a limiter is not a clip on. The bike's electronics would need re-programming (re-mapping) and finding someone with the skill and equipment to undertake such a task no easy mission. As David mentioned in his eloquent review it took many years to iron out this bike's numerous glitches. I personally regard it as being utterly appalling that motor manufacturers rush out new models without adequate testing and subsequent modifications.

I have the rocket 3 and a Vmax, the Vmax is quicker but the rocket 3 is more enjoyable to ride. The Vmax is seriously the hottest bike I have ever owned it gets sooooo hot while sitting at a light or in traffic. Town to town I take the Vmax but I ride the rocket for everything else.

My wife just bought a VTX-1800C for me, and I enjoy it immensely! What didn't you like about it, and how does it compare in feel to the Triumph?
@ZieglerMonster
@ZieglerMonster 7 лет назад
I really liked my VTX1800.. It was my second favorite motorcycle. Compared to the Rocket, the VTX is much slower, top speed isn't as high either. The VTX is also hard to turn and will drag hard.. Almost got me in trouble a few times. Both are comfy, the Rocket is more upright at aggressive and I like that too.. Both are awesome machines

you ever notice that whenever someone asks you how big the motor is and you tell them, they almost always take a step back as if it were a poisonous snake? i bought a left-over '07 Rocket III Classic 9 years ago and everything you say about the bike is true... these things weigh in excess of 820 pounds with fluids yet handle like a bike half their size. like you, i have the pegs under the floorboards completely worn off. unlike you, i rarely take it above 3000 rpm. i don't need to. it makes 90% of peak torque from about 1500 rpm all the way to redline, peaking at about 165 lbs-ft @ 2500 rpm. rolling through the mountains of West Virginia several years ago, i fell in with a bunch of Harley riders. climbing some of those hills those guys had to downshift from 6th to 5th to 4th to maintain speed. all i did was roll on the throttle in 5th and walked away from them. i've experienced some of the electrical problems you mentioned (new ignition switch), and it's in the shop right now... the rear was making noise and the technician found the splines on the driveshaft were rusty. (a wire brush, some steel wool, and a little bit of elbow grease solved that issue.) i have a Corbin saddle, too, but can't use the rider's backrest - it doesn't leave enough room for the wife. hell, it doesn't leave enough room for anyone over 8 years old.... but besides having her on the back, the most fun for me is completely HUMILIATING V-Rods from red lights. basically, i've found the bike to be a total pussycat - until you put your wrist into it. then it becomes a fire-breathing monster. you should warn your audience, though... if you ride one, do NOT rev it up to 3000 rpm at a stop and dump the clutch. you'll find yourself flat on your back on the pavement with nearly half a ton of motorcycle resting on your chest. LOL thanks for posting & keep the shiny side up!
@ZieglerMonster
@ZieglerMonster 7 лет назад
Absolutely.. I love when someone proudly says 15 to 1900 cc and then I calmly say "that is big! This one is 2300 :-)" they all get that look. I absolutely love my rocket.. I am currently in the process of putting carpenter pipes, ram air intake, and the ECU reprogrammed bringing my baby to 175hp at the rear wheel and a rev limiter of 9k.. no limitations for top speed or through the revs

Nice review man. These bikes look awesome, there's a guy round here with one that puts a lot of the summer time sport bike riders to shame on the country back roads. Would love to have a crack of riding one , the specs are a little terrifying compared to what I'm used to though. 45-50 torque and 70-80 hp at the wheel, I'd definitely end up looping it ha ha.
