I am buying my son a Speed 400. Looks great, has a bit of that Triumph mystique, and (short of any major crash damage) I anticipate it will bring a resell amount much closer to the purchase price than other options when he moves up. But...and this is the critical piece...another young rider enters motorcycling on a Triumph. Damn genius of Triumph to get such a well put together bike out there for $ that makes it comparable to used starter bikes and gets young people riding the brand. If HD had done that, they might still be relevant in a few years.

My dad 84 years of age would Love the 400. He loves the way my 1200 sounds and looks but feels the brutal way its engine works and its weight to much. I know he is tempted. And for the money it is So enticing. I’m actually thinking of buying the Scrambler 400X as a nimble bike around town. No I’m not selling my 1200. Never!

I'm long past my touring days and also up in the years where my main desire is to take some nice leisurely rides on a warm summer morning on some 2 lane roads. So it's the Speed 400 for me. I don't want "brutal" and I certainly don't want "heavy". My first "real" motorcycle was a Honda CB77 Super Hawk. Between then and now I've owned big , fast machines with high horsepower and viscious acceleration. They were fun, but I can't say that I got the most pleasure in riding by pulling wheelies or doing a 10 second quarter mile. My most pleasurable memories were those of riding that Honda. Maybe its just rose colored glasses or the innocence of youth, but there's just something that attracts me to a small, agile, fun to ride machine.

Bike size depends largely how one uses it. If I'm gonna ride 500 miles a day cruising 70-90mph and/or hitting inclement weather, my Super Tenere is obvious choice. Traction, tech, power, comfort, protection is all needed. For cheap commute around city, beating traffic, touring occasionally up to 300-400 miles a day, hauling on hitch carrier of truck for vacation, cb500x is best fit and very fun bike. For slow speed, short distances 200-400cc is sufficiant and more fun than heavier bikes. There is also issue of afforability. I would say most people ride what they can afford.

I rode all three yesterday on demo and commented elsewhere on the 1200 already, so here I'll say that the 400 was surprisingly fun. First gear is mostly useless but if you keep around town and start in 2nd gear (unless you're on a hill maybe), it's great. Especially for beginners or for those that just like small bikes. The 900 felt meh but I already have a Speedmaster so maybe familiar is more apt.

I ride the 1200. It does everything a smaller less powerful bike will do. If you like bimbling around the back roads it's a great relaxing ride. If occasionally you like to release the beast in yourself and the bike, WOW!!! what exciting jaw dropping performance that would be lacking in both the 400 and 900. Neither are motorway bikes, but at high speed, the T120 is the more relaxed and comfortable. The street twin has a single clock, but I prefer this as the numbers are larger and easier to read. All these bikes you show are modern style with very little difference between all of them. If you're after a proper classic style retro with great looks and reasonable power, there is only one choice triumph to go for. And that is the T100, in my opinion, obviously, which you didn't even give a mention ? 😊

Thank you for this video. I have be debating between the 400 and the 900. My wife and I have rode about 350,000 miles on motorcycles, but due to her poor health she may never ride again, time will tell. She has battled cancer egith times, had 12 surgeries, maxed out on chemo, radiation and cyber knife treatments. She is currently on immunotherapy treatments and will be every 28 days for the rest of her life. Four uears ago they did a total hip replacement that didn't go well. She hasn't walked without a walker since. She has fallen about twently times in the last four years and with each fall there is a new injury. Her lastest was five broken ribs and another broken vertebra. She now has three broken vertebras. So, to the bikes. I thought I wanted the 900 because it is all I need if she can ride with me again. I don't need the 1200, I'm just too old for all the power. I just want to ride, not race. So this brings me to the 400. If my wife can no longer ride with me, maybe the little 400 will be enough. I just want someting to ride once in a while. I've been riding since 1964 and it is hard to give it up after all these years. So, I think I will go for a red Speed 400 and hope I will be happy with it. If my wife does get stronger then I will go for the 900. Thanks again for this video. RIde safely and enjoy every journey.

Thank you for your comment, Gene. Sorry to hear about your wife's health problems, maybe a new motorcycle would cheer her up a bit? :) The 900 and 1200 are very similar, but the 400 is completely different: relatively tall seat height, very light and easy to ride and 'enough' power for most situations. I would encourage you to ride the 400 and 900 back to back, if you can. There's not a clear-cut winner really, they are just different. Good luck and best wishes to your wife :)

@@RocketMan_Moto When I can I want to go to my nearest Triumph dealer and test drive both. I know the 900 is a little roomier and would be more comfortable for both of us. But if she never rides a gain I think I will be happy witht the 400. Thank you for the well wishes for my wife. She lives in a recliner 24/7 these days and I am begining to lose faith that she will ever get better. Four years ago she started having seizures due to one of the places of cancer in her brain, she had six places orignally but Cyber knife took carwe of five of them. We went to HD trikes after that thinking if she had a seizure on a two wheeled bike it might cause an accident injuring both of us and possibly others. On a trike I think I could pull over and take care of her without an accident. But the Harley Trikes ride like a dump truck and she couldn t stand the jarring ride so we sold our last trike. Then she wanted a Polaris Slingshot, but after this last fall she can no longer get in or out of the Slingshot so it is for sale now. I am sort of waiting to sell the Slingshot before I buy my Triumph, but I feel I am missing some great weather and some great rides.

I've tried the 900 and 1200. The 400 is too underpowered for my needs, but among the 3 i would take the 900. The 1200 felt too unrefined, too much vibration, and the riding position is uncomfortable for me. The 900 on the other hand, feels like a japanese bike, in a positive way. After selling my big adventure bike, i was in a market for a classic looking one, and i ended up buying the Z900RS. I would've bought the Speed900 if it had the double front disc brake.

comparing these bikes as though they have anything in common is kind of dumb! OK - maybe the 400 is similar to the Street Twin ... I mean whatever they are calling the 900, but the 900 is an absolutely completely different bike than the Speed Twin ... I mean the Speed Twin 1200. It is a SHAME that Triumph renamed the Street Twin to Speed Twin 900. It cheapens the real Speed Twin ... the 1200. They are completely different bikes. The Street Twin is a chill cruiser, while the Speed Twin is a classic looking sport bike with a better seating position than the Thurxton. So lame they renamed the Street Twin to Speed Twin 900!

Of course, with a reality check the price matters a lot but set a budget and buy used and you can get a bike that gives you that tingle. This is kind of the problem with a lot of motorcycle reviewers…everything is “dated” or “old” if it doesn’t have usd forks or a complete electronics package. I'm like you a 1200 Speed Twin owner. It's two bikes in one. You can trundle around using the low down torque and be as smooth as butter. Open it up and let the revs climb and it becomes a different beast. Many practical faults like inadequate mudguards but these are curable with aftermarket additions. The point is this is a bike that make you smile when you wheel it out of the garage and just look, makes you smile at the noise when you start it, and makes you smile on every ride. Not cheap, but a machine that makes me smile, priceless.

Now I’ve downsized to the ST900 for more local riding. I have a top box I occasionally put on the 900, which gives the wife a feeling of security, as well as a bit of practicality. Nah!..the 1200 and 900 are timeless Classics, I love the looks with the twin shocks and everything, If one wishes a more modern bike there is the street triple or Trident. IMO the Classic ones are a bit more practical, for example with my street Twin 900 I also use it in some mild off roading with 50/50 dualsport Tires, the 18inch front wheel although it can be a pain to find front tires for it, it can handle a bit of the slightly larger bumps or road imperfections. Handles well on road, its comfy, low seat height and you can also tour on it, the 900 has more than enough power and its very smooth. Not the cup for everyone but it can do a bit of everything which is good. The 400's are nice but honestly I wished they where more similar to the classics, to me its like they are half speed 900 on the front and half trident from the seat backwards. Not a bad thing entirely but looks for looks the classic ones are more better looking, or at least for me. Now what I wish is that they also make 125cc models, how about a modern Triumph Tiger Cub?😅

The 1200 is a great bike which you can't go wrong with and has a 6th gear. For the 900 riders though, the trick with the 900 5 gears and searching for a 6th (which the more expensive 1200 has) is don't change up early! The engines deliver a lot of torque but you can rev them happily higher than most people realise. The lazy torque delivery is great but don't be scared of revving it higher! they are designed for it, so don't worry, work it more. I can change up at over 80mph from 4th to 5th on mine, which is an air cooled 865cc 2013 T100 Bonneville. This bike delivers power in a more linear manner and peak power and torque occur higher in the rev range, but I suspect the same trick could be played on the more modern 900! When you get used to higher revs and change up at 80mph say, then you won't be expecting an extra 6th gear. I think this can sometimes be overlooked, you have engine balancer shafts in the engine to prevent higher revs from being uncomfortable and too vibratory, why not make use of them!

The 900 is a enough bike for anyone if they're being honest, at least insofar as a 'do it all' bike if one could only afford a single motorcycle; the 1200 is for someone who wants a retro that offers some (some) level of comparable performance to a 'proper' sport bike. The 400 is a well-built 'my first bike' that is also a brilliant commuter. I have a 2020 Speed Twin 1200 that I basically made into a superior Thruxton - I wanted a retro version of my supernaked sports bike for casual riding around the mountains and taking to classic bike meetups, and it fit the ticket in a way that my Speed Triple 1200 RS can't (namely in looks, hah!). Personally, I actually like the gaitered forks and true retro looks of the 900 and older 1200 models - I really dislike the USD forks (that aren't even that good nor are they adjustable) on the '22 and later Speed 1200s, but that's purely for aesthetic reasons. A retro that tries to look somewhat modern just strikes me as... out of synch, especially as a retro-setup twin is just never going to handle like a proper sport bike anyway. All in all, I find I agree with most of your take on the three! I've ridden the 400, my partner owns the 900 (which I have ridden plenty), and of course I own the 1200. Cheers.

Nicely presented. Well, I'm glad I watched this video after eating my lunch, even though licking the screen is not really my thing. So the 900 has the knees by the ears (the lowest seat height...too low for my body) and the 1200 comes with an organ donor card. I wouldn't mind the 1200 if the weight would be lower. But as it is, I'd buy the 400. The 50-something kg weight penalty is quite significant to me. Yes, I'd get to our provincial road speed limit of 80 km/h 3 or 4 seconds faster, but then the low speed handling and parking are so much easier with 170 kg.

Hi All, I just wanted to say that for the 900 peeps, I have an 865cc air cooled EFI T100 2013 and my wife and I have just ridden down to the South of France on a 2,137miles round trip with only a basic luggage rack the bike came with, a genuine triumph bib front screen to keep the wind off that the bike again fortunately came with. We travelled light using Oxford Heritage wax cotton throw over panniers and an Oxfor Heritage top bag (waterproof inners), all in black to match the black coloured bike. This luggage had room for 3-5 changes of clothes, some tools, spare bulbs and an electric tyre inflator to keep the rear tyre at 41psi and a tin of chain lube. I only lubed the chain once and filled the rear tyre with air once in the entire trip, leaving my wife to question the tools, Haynes Manual and spare parts😂😂! We also got inexpensive TEC side bars to prevent the luggage from touching the shocks or back wheel. I have changed to Alf Hagon road shocks for bum comfort and put in a Booster plug to keep the fuel mixture from being too lean, so no stalling or over-revving at pullaway and accelerates better. That setup is solid. My wife prefers the slower speed of the T100 Bonneville, which still cruises happily at 80mph and the good news is they can certainly be toured! We are in our 60's and we noticed lots of 2 up 900 new and old Bonnevilles at the Distinguished Gentleman's ride in Birmingham UK this year.

The 900 is a real bargain on the used market. Lot's of low mileage ones at affordable prices. Then you can use the rest of your money on accessories and upgrades 😀And it does everything so good, and feels like a bigger bike.

I agree that it’s a great bike. Thanks for your input 😊👍

Great review! I pre ordered a Speed 400, way back in September. Why? I'm 68 and not ridden a bike for 35 years- until I had a couple of refresher lessons in the Autumn. That showed me, I needed more practice, so bought a cheap Mutt 125. Good move. The 1200 has so much appeal but, my age and the real world- eg my driveway has a noticeable slope making bike handling difficult- means I am happy to take the 400. Should arrive soon!

Great choice! The 400 is a lovely bike to ride. Nobody NEEDS the 1200 - or even the 900, for that matter. Enjoy😊👍

I’d love to, but Triumph Algarve have only got the 400X in at the moment as a demonstrator. Maybe in a few weeks🙏

Owned a 2020 Street Twin 900 for a couple years. Does surprise some of my sports bike friends how well it can handle if you try! (Have upgraded front springs and changed tyres). Saying that the new 1200 has to handle better with the 17” tyre and better suspension/brakes. One nice thing about the 900 is peak torque being lower in the rev range it’s right on tap riding legal speeds. Also appreciate it’ll get to 90mph very quickly but not much more so limits insane speeds. I don’t think it deserves the “Speed” title, given it’s probably slower than most full power 650’s. The torque does make up for the lack to a degree, very easy bike to ride and did anyone mention the sound? Mine had the x-pipe decat and ohh ohh ohhh. I ride with bigger bikes and it only lacks on the straights if they go tonne up which realistically they shouldn’t be doing. Am considering going to the 1200 but not convinced yet

Good idea, but I will have to wait until all the stars align and my local dealer has them available for demonstration at the same time :)

Speed Twin 900 Review I just got a Speed Twin 900 as my 1st motorcycles 🏍️. It is absolutely awesome, I am 45 years old, 5ft 7inches. This motorcycle has Great 👍🏽 Ergonomics to sit and drive High Torque which makes it FUN to drive Easy to handle Superb Sound better than the 1200 Best Looking I have driven the 1200 and the engine heat 🔥 hitting your legs 🦵 is a DEAL BREAKER, this is diff from T120 it’s not about 1200cc the Speed Twin 1200 engine is different and it produces way too much heat to hit your legs and destroy 😢 the experience
