Unexpected fail on startup of the car - but then I found the root of the problem - two adjuster sliders at either end of the mounting bracket, and this cause the bracket to foul on the alternator fan. Is this common, or is it just a Mk1 thing?

Gee, even rusty brackets and corrosion on alternator, you must be in the UK

Tricky job, best done if you have three hands!!! Also, I have not found the adjuster catching the fan on my MK2 Stag (Oct 1976), could it have been because you used two locking washers on the bolt head side, try it with one and a nut too keep it tight. good luck Bob

Good tip Bob. I was thinking of taking an angle grinder to the corner of the braket to give it more clearance, so will try your idea first as it's less invasive :-)
