Hi and Thanks for your guide! I installed by myself this fantastic gear on my Street Scrambler and I noticed great sound, lower shield temperature and more hp. The only negative aspect is a little loss of torque at low RPM, but maybe it's only a wrong impression. What do you think about It?
Me personally that centre weld just ughh. It looks rough The gp exhaust welds are nice and if it looked like that id be liking it more. Aside from that sounds great and good spannering and description.
Views from the Man Cave did you get to ride it before? I havent heard anyone with one yet straight out say the bike performs better but every one ays it sounds better. Im wondering if the lower torque range makes it harder to tell a marked difference. Ive got a SS waiting to be tampered with haha
David Forbes, I did and it certainly seems to add some zip. The bike feels a little more alive and responsive. The loss of the cat should equate to 4 or 5 hp more (although I haven't seen the dunk charts). I took it down to Jack Lilley to show the guys and they also thought it made an improvement.
David Forbes centre weld just completely rules it out for me too which is a pity as it does sound cracking. Yet another top video Tony, thanks man 👍🏻👍🏻
So the Street Scrambler has 2 Cats? One at the bottom and one shown in this video? So you have put a Motone X pipe and a H pipe here? Have I got that right ?
Not in a technical way no, I did a 30 minute ride with the stock pipe and tested the heat from the centre shield by hand. The next day when the H pipe was fitted I did the same. It was noticably different, although I appreciate no at all scientific.
In reality you'll see 2 maybe 3hp difference, so its more about weight saving and noise. The throttle response did appear to sharpen a little, but that may have been a placebo effect?
Tony, I noticed the exhaust pipes in your bikes are spotless. Mine, however, have developed several stains right on the curvature as they comes off the engine. Do you do anything to your exhaust pipes to prevent this. Or do you clean them with some product you can recommend?
Hi Ezequiel, nothing special to be honest. But after cleaning the bike I always give them a squirt and rub down with WD40. Seems to work. Mine has stains also, maybe they just don't show up on the videos
Check out Delboys Garage, they have a video on bringing back the finish on stainless exhausts. Your answer is Autosol. Del shows you how, just look in the Bonneville playlist. Remember Autosol is a polish so therefore is a mild abrasive, so don't use it on chrome! Hope this helps.
How did the pipe look after being aged on the bike. Did it blue like the stock pipe or turn black? (BTW I have that same helmet for my Harley LRS. Lots of comments on it)
Hey Hi, I just bought & added my street scrambler 2018 with 2-1 slip-on from Vance and Hines designed for street scrambler hoping that it would sound better, started bike and it sounds exactly same as stock exhaust even less richer, what a waste of money ( though bought from eBay half the priced ), due to lack of knowledge about CAT being the culprit here I ended up spending on Vance exhaust, Is there anything I can do , as not sure if I can afford to spend more on free spirit to remove cat, or is it the only solution? Basically bike just sounds great with free spirit and didn’t had any need for Vance exhaust separately, Would appreciate your thoughts on it, I live in Uk, London Cheers
Is this the high level exhaust? If so then that exhaust doesnt have a cat (if its the same as this) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EEfo05Gu7_w.html Have you removed the baffle?
Hi Tony, great video mate. I installed one effortlessly on my street scrambler using your video. Very helpful indeed. Thank you. One question: the H-pipe seems to get very very hot on that u bend. I've read that it reduces heat as the cat produces a lot, but it seems hotter now. Is this your experience?
Does anyone know how this compares to the British Customs competition headers? I'm trying to figure out the difference but noboday leaves reviews these days....
It looks very similar, I would say almost do difference in design, It'll just come down to the build quality. I cant speak for the BC unit, but Freespirits is top notch..
+Robert Newitt Hi Robert, this bike wasn’t remapped and it ran just fine. If the silencer was being replaced as well then perhaps a remap would be more beneficial.
Views from the Man Cave Thanks Tony. When removing the O2 sensor do you have to disconnect it from the loom, or does the nut collar rotate freely to allow removal? Cheers Rob
Cheers Tony I’ve been waiting for the TEC one to be released which won’t have the weld As it uses bespoke Bends. Not that the weld bothers me too much, it’s a bit cheaper! 😄
Seriously mate, I am a mechanic by trade(over 30 years) and I see a lot of videos on bike repairs, etc. that make me cringe. Yours are super intuitive and accurate for the laymen. I also know how much effort it is just to make a short professional video. So big thumbs up for all your efforts here!
A year later I went with the British Customs De-Cat Pipes and wrapped them. (they have a nice Stainless finish but wrapping was in my plan) The stock cans are strait through. They give the ability to look stock (they are), but if you open the throttle moderately or harder, they are strait through pipes. So if I'm sitting at a light and a squad car stops next to me, I can take off easy and it sounds stock. I added the boost plug but a CPU re-program is on the back burner. I like the look of the stock cans too and I'm never going to be as loud as the Harley's around here (N. Nevada) so why even try? The extra kick from De-Cat and the boost plug is palpable. Great idle and no snatchy throttle and...Yowza. I also added the Progressive front fork springs and THAT was a very welcome difference also. Very easy to DYI also. Mine is a '22 and a good bit of re-molding to fit me, I'm 5'7" and for appearance. I plan to make a short video soon but as long as I have it, it will always be work in progress. I've watched many of your videos and consider you a top source for Triumph "how to's". many thanks and appreciation for what you do.
I pick up a new scrambler next week and I've been dooing my research and watching all your great videos, do you know if there is also a way to remove the baffles from the original pipe on the scrambler ?
Hi Andy, I only had the bike on loan for a couple of days, so didn't have a chance to check it. It ran fine, even felt like a better throttle response, but that could have just been a placebo? I've run my Street Twin without the cat for several thousand miles and it's been great, no ill effects. Unless you start messing around with the intake side the ECU should have enough tolerance to deal with the minimal change in back pressure, and fuel accordingly.
The front wheel of the Street Scrambler is a 19 inch, which would create some issues, but in theory It could be done. But if you are going down that route, you may as well just buy the Triumph accessory wheels
The build quality of the Freespirits pipe is top notch, I haven't seen the BC one up close. One thing I will point out is that the Freespirits one has a link pipe (as does the stock) the BC one does not which is why I would choose Freespirits.....
Views from the Man Cave I installed the free spirits one on my street scrambler 2018 and I’m so happy about it. You really can notice the change in sound and the bike feels smoother.
Hi Alexandre, sadly I didn’t have the ability to measure the sound. It wasn’t much louder than stock, in fact very similar on tick over. But it gave a nice ‘bark’ when you ripped the throttle
thank you for your reply mister ! I just wanted to be sure before buying, do not want to be harrassed by the police. Keep up your good work, i really enjoy all of your videos !
Weld on down pipe is ugly the other pipe is bent without any ugly welding on sight. The cat was there for a reason now the fumes are socialy unacceptable?
Hello Tony, great tutorial!!! I have one small issue and I need your help. I've brought a street scrambler a week ago, and I've been trying to order the H-pipe but no chance. Tried different dealers but couldn't order it. Do you know which one from Free Spirits list have the de-cat ? Thanks in advance
