Great to see a review that isn't 100% gushing praise on the new Street Triple purely because it works on track, somewhere where most of us normal Joe's, most of the time, won't be doing our riding. Slightly disappointing to hear this new model moves the Streetie a bit nearer the Speed Triple in character, for me the Speed Triple is too powerful and weighty for the road where as the old Street Triple was eminently usable with it's easy to access lightweight hooligan fun. Really can't wait to try one of these out for myself though (as a long term owner and huge fan of the Street Triple) Thanks to this more realistic review perhaps I can go off on my own test ride without unrealistic expectations and end up disappointed. If you're a big fan of the old Street Triple, you'll get what I was getting at within minutes. This new one isn't bad, far from it. I just thought it was more like the plusher and more refined new Speed Triple than it was like the hooligan 675 Striple. JH

Don't forget that the new Street Triple R is tuned specifically to be more street friendly than this RS. The RS is tuned more for top end while the R is tuned for more grunt down low. I wouldn't make a judgement on its character until reviews for the R model come out.

Chap, I think that was about the best bike review I have ever seen. I like your style - keep the "outtakes" in! I've never owned a Triumph, not a fanboy, doubt I will buy one of these, but I wouldn't mind trying one on for size. Good job.

I have a Ducati Monster 696 from 2009. I have recently been considering buying a new motorcycle, so I have tried the Ducati Monster 821 and the Triumph Street Triple 765 RS. The Monster 821 I found stiff and the clutch was very hard, I had a hard time putting the bike in neutral. Maybe I am used to my Monster 696 with a Ducabike clutch slave cylinder and radial master brake and clutch systems, so it is super soft to change gears on my current bike. I would never buy a 821 after the test I did, I would still like to try the Monster 1200, because I like Italian bikes, but there is no test unit in my local dealer. As for the Triumph Street Triple 765 RS, I absolutely loved it, It was very fun to ride, fast easy going, a complete joy. And I can get it for 12.500 EUR, that is cheaper that the Ducati Monster 1200 that goes for 14.050 EUR, even thought the dealer said they offer a discount of 1.300 EUR on the Ducati that would leave it at 12.750 EUR. Hard choice.

@@beefquiche my needs changed a bit, so my wife can be comfortable and to be able to store some luggage I decided on buying sport touring kind of bike. After trying most bikes out there, I bought the Ducati Multistrada 950S, mainly because I could a discount. Before the discount my first option was the Yamaha Tracer 900 GT and the Triumph Tiger at second place. Sorry if that does not help on deciding on a naked bike. If I were to buy a naked bike now I think my first option would be the Street Triple RS, although I would try the new Ducati Monster first.

@@beefquiche I have had no issues so far, the unit I bought was the demo bike from the dealership (hence the discount). I find the Multistrada a bit bulky and awkward to handle when in the garage (I have a shared garage and have to park behind my car) but if I had a private garage with enough space there would be no problem there. Once you are riding around it is very comfortable and a great ride. I still prefer smaller bikes, like the Street Triple RS or the Monster, but if I want be able to ride, my wife must come along, and for that I need something more comfy. Perks of being married I guess. As for the Hypermotard, I have never tried it, I have heard it is a blast to ride, loads of fun. I'm getting to old for to much fun, need to start looking at scrambler type bikes or cruisers. 😆

Interesting - others are saying the 765 makes more torque and power over the 675 at all RPM. One would then think that it wouldn't be necessary to wind the 765 up anymore than the 675 to tap into the torque/power... Indeed that's what I've heard so far.

Is the R just as "bad" in terms of being more for the track than the street? Or is it just the RS model that's like that?

Whilst the dash and clocks look exciting and good to me ,,,have Triumph had the brains not to power headlights till bike is started as that's my gripe with my 11 plate speed triple,, when you finished fiddling and ready to start bike battery's about flat ,, saying that this has ,,I think l e d s so proberbly don't use as much power thanks Shane uk

Is you're opinion based on only the rs? Because the rs is mostly track focussed, meaning more top end? But do you think the S model will have more initial grunt and better road usability? Or even the R model?!

The R should have a bit more torque so I guess it's more suitable for the road / everyday use. I just think if something is to go wrong with this new Street Triple it's the screen and the joystick.

Yeah the R seems more appropriate for those uses. At least that's how I'm approaching it. The S seems a bit too 'meh' somehow but the R fits perfectly right in the middle. Plus three paint options vs. two for the others! Ha. The R and RS have the same torque figure but the R makes it a bit earlier in the rev range (9,400 vs. 10,800). Both have 77 N-m/56.8 lb-ft.

you are right, but the torque curve on R is to be expected "more" flat sacrificing the top-end peak power. at least I believe and expect you'll get the same torque sooner from the rev perspective on R than RS. this would make the R more sufficient for road riding. let us see what first reviews and comparisons will tell.

Don't understand Why you would think it bizarre that it made more sense "on track " ?... the RS is the "track" orientated version the other models tuned specifically for road use , even having more torque lower down than the RS and no doubt feeling much more like a faster old model Street than the RS does ....

Arno D mt09 has a great motor and it ends there. Chassis suspension brakes the lot is just crap if you want an overall great bike Str is the way

The engine puts out 94bhp but is restricted to 47bhp for the A2 licence. After you have done your A licence, you can get it de-restricted by triumph and then you have a 94bhp bike. I wouldnt choose to have a 47bhp street triple, but because of uk laws thats all im allowed to ride. Join the dots now

Samuel Wicks the laws here are a little different possibly. Once a 660 always a 660, ecu is tamper proof and can not be unrestricted. You sure you got your facts right

I doubt there's many 19-21 year olds that could afford to drop 8k on a new street triple. Im not saying it's a bad idea, but I doubt it'll sell well

Just bought one last weekend had the choice between a 2016 675R or 2018 RS after riding both of them back to back I ended up with the RS. Something left me a bit to be desired on the 675 R after riding the RS. Although I can understand all the hype behind the street triple line up their amazing bikes. Previous bike was a 636 lovely bike but super sports are overrated on the street. Ps: Coming from an old 20 year old

These bike are fantastic but not in the real world. The power band is unusable in normal everyday conditions so your using the bike outside the power band. Say your on a motorway at 70 your likely to be in first or second max to be in the power band. Third gear and you might as well be on a cb500. Lower revving bikes with higher torque are more fun on a day to day basis. Ok the track is totally different but how many people will buy this bike and not use it on a track or to its full potential? I have a few bikes and my favourite is a 10 year old BMW g650x, I have lowered the sprockets to give more torque at the back wheel and closer gear ratios. It's a blast to ride up to 75mph. I am always in the power band......

Funny, I've had no issues using my '12 Street R in everyday conditions to the tune of 30k miles in less than 3 years. The bike makes something like 90% of peak torque from 3k to redline.

Grumpy Garry Apparantly, Triumph has shortened the first two gears if the 765. I found this to be a weak point of the 675. Besides this, this video describes the experience of the RS model which has a different (higher HP at higher revs) engine and character than the R and S models which are tuned more towards midrange power.

Sorry but couldn't disagree more ! .. the street triple is laden with torque and is the perfect engine for road use , it really is the ultimate "real world bike" .... have you ever tried one ? .. It has instant torque from 2500rpm upwards that would destroy your BMW at any rev/speed combination. This new RS model is a little down on torque as its designed as a Road/Track version with more top end power

It is (almost) perfect for road use and it has more than enough torque, you are correct. BUT the Triumph engineers (or marketeers) really like long gearing on their motorbikes, probably to boost the MPG figures. This is not only the Street Triple, but also other Triumphs. For me the very long 1st and 2nd gears were actually sliggtly disappointing, what is the usability on the road of a bike that does 100+ km/h in second gear?? First thing I would do if I ever get one is changing the sprockets. Just good to see that Triumph themselves already changed it a bit on the 765, this could actually be based on customer feedback.

I own a 675 STR and I've literally never read more of of a load of bullshit than what you've just written.... The 675 will wheelie almost off idle in second gear (about 25kph) and though it's possible to do over 155kph in 3rd, the motor is so smooth, and has so much low and grunt that it's possible to ride around in traffic in top gear under 40kph.... Go ride one mate - you'll see what I mean

Meh I rode one years ago and it felt like a toy to me. No windshield so it can't be ridden year round. I am still on a BMW that does it all.
