PLEASE NOTE:- THIS HAS BEEN RE-LOADED AS I INSTALLED THE LAYSHAFT 2nd GEAR BACKWARDS. THE 3 SLOTS SHOULD FACE THE CLUTCH SIDE. I DIDN'T REMAKE THE VIDEO BUT ITS NOW HIGHLIGHTED IN THIS VERSION.
Lots of 4 speed gearbox videos on RU-vid but not many 5 speed, so thanks for doing this one. I need to take gear box apart and I was a bit overwhelmed at the thought, but after watching this video (and one other that I found) I feel better about doing it. The other video I watched shows someone assembling a T160 gearbox, which is pretty much the same as the T140 5 speed from what I've been told.. just slightly longer main shaft, but same gears and set up.
@@guerrillabuildchoppers4823 what special tools should I get for this job? I'm planning on getting a clutch hub puller and a sprocket nut wrench? (I figure I might as well put a new front sprocket on while I'm in there.) Any other special tools I'll need to take the transmission out for inspection then put it back together?
Some new Tab washers are handy but it depends on the reason for dismantling it? Easier to put 1 order in. The clutch puller number is 61-7014 from Britishbikedoctor.
@@guerrillabuildchoppers4823 Thank you. I'm going to take it apart to find out why I'm occasionally going into neutral from 3rd gear on the down shift. It never happens while I'm upshifting, and it doesn't happen every time. I'm thinking it could be a warn camplate or shifter fork, but who knows. I'm hoping to see some obvious wear when I take it apart. Th plan is to order the tools I'll need, then place another order once I'm able to examine everything and see what I'm replacing. I'm a little worried I won't see any obvious wear and won't know what to replace. I replaced all the springs in the outer gearbox cover and in the indexing plunger, but that didn't seem to solve the problem.
Why the feck don't they show this in the manuals spent all day trying to offer the complete assembly into the gear box in one go as they suggest. Thanks for the help!
Very useful, thanks. Do you know if the later bikes with the left foot gear change are basically the same to do? I've recently acquired a 1978 bike with a gearbox problem - only 4 gears! Not sure yet whether its a 5 speeder with one gear not working or if someone has put in a 4 speed set up for some bizarre reason so I'll have to open the cases soon to have a look.
Yes, left foot change is the same, except crossover shaft comes through from the other side to engage with the selector mechanism inside the outer cover.
