I think we used to have a better judge of intent - as in we were laughing because of the absurdity,, not WITH the absurdity. At some point the general consensus changed to "any joke ABOUT a subject is endorsement of that subject." All this kind of comedy is behind paywalls now.
Syd's right ..I agree with him 100% .. youre going to need a serious incentive to bring this comedy back to the States ...like the "good life" instead of "the struggle"... I mean it wasnt really valued when it was living its highlight in US while it thrives in other countries where people actually value it .instead of considering it to be "criminal element" of society ..know what i mean ?
Of all the late nite shows that have ever been, the most consistently hilarious one was CONAN, thanks in no small part to Robert Smigel's contributions. Thanks for being the greatest, Conan & Team Coco!
I remember an episode where triumph was asked the question "in what activity would one 'tie a rope to the poop rail'?" (the answer is sailing) to which he responded "dating Little Richard." Little Richard was in the square next to him and had this expression of absolute shock on his face.
I remember when Triumph made his first appearance, at the Westminster dog show. The guest who came after him asked Conan how much he could do that to him, because there was no way anyone was going to look like anything but a let-down after that screamingly funny, raunchy surprise. Long Live Triumph!
@@mizztery2994 I don't know about that. His Conan On Location shows where he travels the world have lots of great ad-libs. I'm sure they cut out all of the stuff that doesn't land, but some of it is still gold.
@@mizztery2994 Except there is documented evidence, both anecdotal and recorded to dispute that. Listen to him and Paul Rudd on his podcast, it's them ad-libbing throughout. They even talk about early on avoiding location bits because they are worried he can't ad-lib, and then he goes and has some of the best location scenes in late night, which are all ad-libbing.
@@mizztery2994 I understand, I feel like some comedians don't do it for me, but I think Conan, beyond whether he is funny to any given person or not, is a good man who tries to do the right thing, so I not only think he is funny, but I respect him as a person. Cheers.
Yes, on the person who mentioned Gilbert Godfrey. Triumph was spectacular. The major networks have to look back and look at what little they have now. And, know Conan was their mistake. The quality of his shows. And the fact, that quality acts wanted to be on his show. Just says it all for me. Classic!!!

Of all the little segments, I thought the one with The Sopranos guys was hilarious. They lost it on the line about the Chihuahua. (So did I though). Too funny.
Triumph is outrageous...a perfect addition to the perpetually boring Hollywood Squares. I would give Triumph and Kathie Lee a situation comedy...perfect duo!
I really do love some of the early older stuff from Whoopi Goldberg. That was back when she was much younger and wasn't really censored!! She didn't care about what people think of her at that point!! My God have things changed............
