Here’s what the song is about, my guy: Paolo Gregoletto (Triviums bassist) says the bands guitarist Corey Beaulieu was scrolling through his TV guide & he saw the phrase ‘Beyond Oblivion’ on a show, and wrote it down. I felt like I could make that work for a chorus, so I had to think of a theme of what that would be. I was listening to a bunch of podcasts about artificial intelligence but they were comparing the idea of the coming technology to the atomic bomb of how we created this incredibly immense, dangerous world-destructing thing in a moment when no one was really thinking of the implications. The song was viewing it from the perspective of someone that creates this sort of technology and comes to view it for what it is.

Check out their Ascendancy album, their best work in my opinion. Or, these songs: Down From the Sky, Ember to Inferno, Suffocating Sight or In Waves.

The lyrics refer to the advancement of technologies used for the creation of awful weapons of war, specifically the atomic bomb and how it’s advanced to now (chemical weapons, napalm, agent orange, etc). How it could’ve been used for good, and how it now is just leading to destruction and death.

GiBBY you gotta check out some more Trivium! You asked about the "what have we done?" line. Obviously music and lyrics are open to individual interpretation, but I think Paulo the bass player said something along the lines that the song was written about the development of A.I. and comparing it to when we (america) were first developing the atomic bomb back in WW2. He said something along the lines of "I was listening to a bunch of podcasts about artificial intelligence but they were comparing the idea of the coming technology to the atomic bomb of how we created this incredibly immense, dangerous world-destructing thing in a moment when no one was really thinking of the implications. Anyways I think the whole prechorous kind of sums up the whole song, they keep asking the question "what have we done?" and Matt answers with "to the future we run", "headlong without question", "creations devised", "to put an end to all life" which i suppose you could make the case for either A.I. or nuclear weapons depending on your viewpoint and the context. Sorry to get really nerdy, this is just one of my favorite songs and it's got some really interesting ideas in the lyrics.
