@@Bruh-ob9mi He's not comparing Trivium now and before. What he mean is the metalcore scene itself back then was better than now (in his opinion) and old Trivium was one of them during that time. Trivium is way way better now but no longer can be labelled as metalcore. I myself don't think earlier trivium was purely metalcore tho.

Any song with a 9 string is just completely unnecessary in my opinion. The notes are so muddy at that pitch that it's not even worth playing anything more complicated than a simple chord.

@@Dodogama5474 Which is true, but those notes are pretty sick if you know what you're doing. The Only Thing They Fear Is You comes to mind.

I agree that if used correctly, these notes can result in great songs, but ironically having this many strings limits what you can do, even with 8 strings in certain tunings (and I totally love 8 strings)

@@oRP137 Well honestly, part of it is for the same reason you wouldn't do power chords that low on a bass, the whole thing of low interval limits. Power chords become mud down that low, but sometimes that's a sound you want. Honestly, I see it just as another tool in the toolbox.

He can't do those vocals anymore because that technique was very bad for his throat and that's why he couldn't scream in SitS album. I also love those vocals but if it meant he couldn't sing anymore, I'd gladly choose his current vocals.

@@getaround1 you are correct with his throat. i was talking about those deep death vocals which must not affect the throat if you do it right. check live material of when all light dies from 2009/2010 with all those deep and even high pitch vocals for example. it made the song even better with a lot more variety (compared to his awesome but monotone shouts). i still wonder why they never used that on their albums. and about the old screaming technique: he is still doing it for recording albums. so they still put anything that fits best on future albums! :)

@@travoltieful You're right about the deep death growls, I love the sound of them but i don't know if they fit trivium's new style of music though they still sound beastly. About the old technique, he does use a technique that strains his voice for recording, but it's not his old technique. You can hear the differences from Shogun and the sin and the sentence/ WtDMS and he has stated that he has a new technique for screaming vocals

With strings that thick, it's much more difficult to press down and create clear sounding notes.

I mean, of course will sound like shit, is a 9 strings guitar, i think is more like a toy to make fun than a guitar( or a bass ) at this point

Not if you got enough room on the bridge to pull back the string, I haven't had any issues. At that point it's the same as a Bass VI, and sounds like one, but with high strings.

In some ways it's a scale issue. An ideal string, from an intonation and clarity perspective, is as thin as possible. This minimises weird overtones, but of course then your strings will get even floppier than they already are (in addition to probably having less low end). This is one of the reasons Meshuggah's signature 8's have an extra-long 29.4" scale length. They can get away with skinnier strings which are clearer at low tunings, without sacrificing string tension. I think more ERG's should do this - dunno about 9's, but most 8-strings seem to hang around 27 inches. Fine for shredding, not so great for getting the best sound out of your B and F# strings.

@@stewartmathieson5032 rock on the range 2014, after years of unhealthy screaming Matt absolutely destroyed his voice. That's the reason silence in the snow had now screaming. Thankfully he's gotten really good coaching and can scream safely now (and better than ever in my opinion)
