@@jerryknuckles736 Yeah, but fr it would be fun to have guys to play with. All my friends from high school- don't/didn't listen to metal or rock of any kind. I got one of my friends to go to a Rammstein concert because....you know.. it's much easier to get someone into listening to that type of "metal" rather than some full blown thrash etc. or smt "too old school". It's easier for someone that doesn't listen to "guitar music", because it has keyboards and such so much, but it's a good balance for me to listen to aswell since it's still is pretty heavy.
@@qr-code6334 oh of course it would! No one is my area does this type of metal either. I'm all about the instrumemtals of black metal. Tjats what im trying to do. Maybe lyrics and guttural cries will make their way but im having way too much fun just playing and putting together whatever comes to mind
It's me or listening this man talk is like watching satisfying videos? Really love how he explain every single thing so meticulously almost with no interruption..... Love this guy so bad
@@The_JustJoshing I know. I'm just saying this because everyone who has done this interview (and the Favorite Riffs one) via satellite filmed it on their phones or Zoom calls. For some reason, I wasn't expecting Matt to use his Twitch setup. Though, I probably should have, especially given that he has been using it for everything now.

I learned how to scream, the false chord or fry vocals or whatever you want to call it, at a very young age. It was just this weird growly thing I did when I was little. Something I'd do to goof around. Then I heard it in music. It's easy to me because I stumbled upon proper technique by blind chance before I was even in grade school.
Personal take as a screamer of 6 years now. I started doing it wrong by taking the piss out of oil from bring me the horizon back in their scene days. Blew my voice out all the time just to prove how wrong his style was. Never intending to learn how to actually scream. I’d definitely recommend following matts advice here over the hard way like myself and many others

I first heard of Trivium via that Roadrunner Records project, back in 2005, as a 15yo kid. I tried to emulate the screams in Pull Harder, and it messed up my voice big time lol.

Crazy how people heard older/classic metal when they were young. All I heard from 9 to 11 was Job for a cowboy, linkin park and Mike fuqqin jones Didn't even comprehend metallica til guitar hero came out 😂
I found eating ice cream is great for coating my throat. I tried screaming after eating ice cream and my lows sounds so cool. I would guess milk would do the same thing most likely. Probably not good before a show (even worse during), but I found it interesting to try.
every time i hear matts story i think to myself, how the hell could he do improper screaming for ~15 years and not absolutely destroy his voice, while i shred my throat laughing a bit too loud in front of my pc
He had to cut tours short a few times because he blew out his voice. Then there was that time they intentionally cut his mic during LLTTF his voice was so shot.
Long story short, there can be multiple variations of the improper technique. They do share sons common features, but in general everyone's problems are individual and have different impact on the vocal chords. Also, some people have more durable chords and it takes longer to thrash them.
One of the best reasons why Trivium is my favorite band is because of a mix of good melodic singing and screaming that isn't too overwhelming and still clear with the heavy music.

I learned how to scream and growl at 14 years old, I had to learn just by myself, sure ill probably never be a Rockstar, but being able to scream along at concerts and screaming while you drive is fantastic, I first used asking alexandria as a reference to start, no im screaming along to heaven shall burn and trivium. Btw your vocals are definitely a difficult technique to mimic
great video, especially for people that are learning to scream, my old singer in my old band really hurt his voice back in the early 2000s, this is a great preventative measure to direct viewers in the rite direction in to prevent damage and be on the right track on what to do from a reputable screamer, thank you for this video, i wish this type of video was around many many years ago - kevin

How i learned to scream was just like randy from lamb of god. I started messing and screaming. Then i kept on doing it. My friends say i sound good like a cross from chris motionless and randy blythe
That's mad, I started with imitating David Draiman from disturbed. More of a rocknroll, vocal distortion like Axl Rose and Brian Johnson. After about a month I started to realise how I was doing it wrong, projecting from my throat and not my gut. Really started trying when Slipknots WANYK came out, and tried the lower tones on various Meshuggah albums. Started messing around with Suicide Silence's recent album. Can confidently say I can scream well now, after about a year of being self taught and a couple more years being taught how to sing.

@@hytellus well yes Twitch has to make a cut, but let’s not pretend that’s still not a huge amount of money per month. 8000x3 still is $24,000 that he gets to just put in his pocket
I remember trying to even remotely mimick what Chester Bennington did on THAT scream on Given Up in my very early teens. After that, I could taste the blood in my throat, but turns out after that I eventually eased into my current technique, which can go from deathcore lows all the way to highs
I started just messing around as a kid and regularly hurt my voice by doing things wrong so i totally get the story of how he had to break everything down and redo it all over again from scratch.

"Great interview! Thanks for the mention! Matt talks about so many interesting issues that most singers are not aware of, but he has had to live them to understand the importance of training. Good job, man! Just to make things more clear: This "screaming" aspect, well, to be frank, it should not be called like that. It's a ...technique... and every singer or human body that practices this technique correctly and consistently can learn how to do that. It has been the same technique used by almost every major star on the planet. As Matt mentioned in the video, one can really hurt himself if it's done incorrectly. This is why it's important to train your voice with healthy guidance and not just following scales concerning the sound of the notes alone, especially if you think about a professional career. " "You can check by yourself how Matt practices as there is a masterclass recording he took with Ron Anderson and Dr.Pipe Perez (vocal coaches to the stars) where you can learn the approach on how to use every muscle in your body to support your sound and your scream healthily. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-X_5xEGFWpZo.html
Man, I remember the first time I saw Trivium opened at the Venture Theatre in CA. I never really followed them. He is right. I watched a lot of videos on how to scream and technique is curial.
This is very informative, especially the part about using different technques for studio and live. And doing it everyday, I totally understand why he does both. And why it's super important.

So I had issues with my vocals as a kid. I was self-taught and took huge influence from Trivium, however after a session in studio I blew my voice out and then I continued to practice, never warmed up, did shows and then went back to studio and blew my voice out horrendously. I only learned last year, 10 years after damaging myself, that I have perfect vocal folds and no damage present - it turns out I have another issue entirely. Now I use my voice for my work and although I want nothing more than to learn how to do metal vocals again it's a massive risk to my health and work. My point is that what Matt says here about studio vs "safe" vocals should be taken with a pinch of salt for those learning how to do vocals. Do not ever seek to blow your voice out or push yourself too far for the sake of it - don't take the risks that others do when you do not share their biology. After 10 years of issues, I can safely say that although I was very good for my age at the time, taking stupid risks and missing out on the educational aspects of modern metal vocals has been to my detriment.
I was one of those people until I took the time to try and get into it. I realized quickly that screaming isn’t a thing you can just do, at least not without hurting yourself haha. It took a few months of practicing mid-fry screams and gutturals to learn that it is all about keeping a relaxed esophagus and a tight diaphragm, for the most part. Still working on highs, don’t know how those crazy mofo’s pull those off lol.
Just want to let you know that vocal tuning takes place on literally everything that happened after the software came into existence. Even metal music. Even screaming.
@@lightningmonky7674 I wish I were better with words so I could explain it in a way that makes it sound as basic as the technique I use. I think the thing that helped me learn the most for gutturals was learning how to make that opening at the back of my mouth and top of the throat do all sorts of different sized holes lol.
man I grew up listening to the same bands he did but I didn't vibe with them then when I got into middle school I started listening to heavier new stuff like SOAD 3 Days Grace (only Riot) Rammstein, and so on but it wasn't til 8-9th grade that I got introduced to Bullet For My Valentine, and Trivium I played them on repeat, then one day my friend introduced me to As Blood Runs Black and Job For A Cowboy, he was so excited when he bust in my class room saying "dude you gota hear this, the double bass petal sounds like a freakin hum" when I heard that my heart actually fluttered, it was just like a movie and I knew I was a metal head
“High without being annoying” I’d call that mid range lol Also when he said “then I’ll blow my voice on purpose” for studio recording he makes it sound like he still can’t scream without hurting himself. Very interesting.
dude what do i have to do to hear what you do for a warm up? your story is my story except I just started and I'm totally not famous lol no please, I do this from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. everyday... what do you do to warm up?

i do screams, growl, self thaught, listen alot to Danny Worsnop and try like him, but i think growls and scream there is only all about technuiqs :D >:D
What’s crazy is Matt’s story’s is almost exactly like mine band wise. I actually started doing death metal vocals first, covering cannibal corpse, deicide, death and a few others. I shifted over to the more traditional metal vocals at the age of 17. Big influences were Slipknot, trivium, killswitch engage and fear factory. I wanted to be Corey and Burton so damn bad lol. But drugs got ahold of me at a young age and I quit music at 18. Still got it in me though!
@@luiswiley372 Nobody in the early 2000s called Slipknot and Fear Factory, old school traditional metal lmao WTF. They were literally new bands in the early 2000s how can they be called traditional.
@@jesseinfinite I was referring to the vocal style. Compared to now. There are so many now, I consider that type of vocalizing back then as traditional lol. But I’m not trying to step on toes here....hails 🤘🏽🤘🏽
