Kind of surprised that not loving Matt vocals is a popular opinion... I LOVE his voice, it's so clear and full, like it is coming from the back of his lungs. Feels like the opposite of "holding something back" for me.
Honestly since Matt blew out his vocals 2 years ago, this was a accomplishment. He is back screaming with a different technique that will have more longevity than he would have doing it the way he used to. Anyway good review and can't wait for more!
Cauldron Of Weird bummer, but hey at least he still tried to finish the show the best he can. Wish I could go there one day. Only a few hours away just didn't't have the money.
chaney 22 Funny I see so few people mention that Matt actually blew his voice out. On his IG he posted many pics of doctor visits etc over the last few years for his voice. So he can either scream with abandon and destroy his "instrument" or try different things and try to actually keep his voice intact. Unfortunately a lot don't like the route he chose but I don't think they understand the actual physicality that goes into metal vocals even with perfect technique. I think for what could have been...this is excellent.
TwoToeTags Metal Reviews I think everything fits perfectly in Trivium. I've seldom heard a band so pure like them. But hey I Respect your opinion but cannot understand it xD
listen to this song done live.. Matt sounds horrible... in every trivium album the vocals whether harsh or clean are always soft. for example in this song his harsh vocals are quite and being washed by his clean vocals.. in waves was a lot like this where the growls and screams were always being masked by something
phil patterson He can't scream like old days live because he's a musician, and they are a very active band. Matt screaming his old ways in 2-5 songs will absolutely break his voice (again) cancelling their entire tour. Musicians have to eat last I checked.
The drummer is Alex Bent, Trivium's new drummer. He was in a couple death metal bands and is super talented. Also the Arch Enemy reference may be because Trivium has toured a lot with them. Maybe just gained some influence.
Before you heard the screams you were already criticizing his voice. On the other hand, just when they harmonize the solo, you say its bad because it reminds you to Arch Enemy? Are they the only who can harmonize solos? Totally disagree with you guys.
What's wrong with criticizing his voice before hearing the screams? You think this is the first time I've heard Trivium? I've been listening to Trivium for well over a decade and I understand people who disagree but Matts voice has always turned me off. He's the reason why I like the band but I don't love the band. Regarding the solo, what I said had absolutely nothing to do with the harmonizing guitars. I was talking specifically about the riff that was being played. It just jumped out at me and I felt like I've heard it before, possibly from an Arch Enemy song. Either way, thanks for checking out our vid! - Vile
if i may give an opinion ... im a trivium fan since i was 14 yo since 2004 .. and what i think .. matt's voice was one of the strongest voices than.. he got sick cuz he figured out that he was singing in a wrong way for so long .. so he still got it but not like it was back in 2008 (shogun) or before
Just a heads up Matthew heafy damaged his voice really bad so his screams he is working on again so thats why its kinda held back sounding like you said! But loved the reaction!
Vocals are the weakest part?! I personally love the vocals, I get an Iron Maiden type of vibe, very epic and soaring, amazing power. In my opinion at least.
The fact that he blew his voice out and still put the effort in for Silence in the Snow and learned a new tech for this new album, he should get tons of respect. Sever the Hand, Beyond Oblivion and Beauty in the Sorrow are amazing.
I appreciate your guys' input on this. I personally like it, to be honest. The thing with music today, is that it's so hard to be original, because everything has pretty much already been done. You could make any riff, and it will sound similar to something else. That's just my personal opinion, of course. Thanks for sharing guys. Keep up the good work.
TwoToeTags Metal Reviews That is a sin. You're telling me y'all have never heard of Balls To The Wall (which is old school Accept, but amazing)? Look them up!
Evey Marie Its cool to see someone knows what they're talking about! I agree with u EM! Its good to hear matt screamin again! You gonna check out the fall tour??
Trivium is my favourit band ever and I have watched a lot reaction videos to this song. And you are the only one criticizing this song at some points. ... And thats why I liked your reaction the most. Even though it´s my favourite band I can´t always say" everything they do is always the best" so ... good job guys!
Awesome song! I thought this was a huge improvement since Vengence Falls, Alex Bent bringing some badass beats! Nick was a really good drummer but after seeing this Alex is bringing in the guns! Its also good to hear Matt screaming again and no Draimen voice 👍 I feel like this song is a huge combination of all their albums especially The Crusade and Shogun (shogun is amazing btw) its always good to hear some new trivium though, Silence in the snow kinda let me down though but still i love this band and been there since Ascendency graced my life, seen the band 13 times and in December it'll be my 14th 👍 All in all good review guys, saw this in my recommendations and thought i'd check it out. Im excited for the new album!
It's really hard to judge since this new album hasn't been released in full, but I've seen an improvement since Silence in the Snow with this song. Honestly, I think it has everything to do with Alex Bent, he's a high-energy drummer and he really takes this song to another level. I saw Trivium last October and Matt's screams have never sounded better! However, I do think the clean vocals are really getting away from Trivium's discography since every album leading up to In Waves featured screams and unclean vocals, whereas cleans are really a staple in Vengeance Falls, Silence in the Snow, and these two new singles for the upcoming album. Trivium are at their best when they bring the aggression
I understand the whole vocal thing I guess, but I respectfully disagree. Matt's vocals have come extremely far compared to Trivium's older stuff and he CAN do way better harsh vocals, he actually used to be the front man of a death metal band, this is just trivium's style. But hey, opinions are opinions, good video
I think I much prefer Matts older vocals like on Ascendancy and The Crusade. It was a little more raw back then.. now it sounds too clean which I guess is good technically but audibly it hurts the overall sound imo. Thanks for checking out the vid! - Vile
yeah, watch him performing Down from the sky at Woodstock. I get that Matt doesn't want to blow his voice out again, but he's holding back wayyy to much. I mean, James Hefield blew his voice out twice and is in his fifties, and even he sings more raw than Matt.
Memory true, however to be fair Heafy was in Trivium at a young age and has actually played for quite a while. He is much younger than Hetfield obviously but really has played a lot of shows as Trivium releases a new album every other year and constantly tour, they hardly ever take a break so Heafy is probably trying to stay in it for the long run but I see what you mean. It's like, if you've ever heard the first 5 albums and have heard what he's done, newer albums seem like child's play when it comes to screams.
You guys seem a bit to nit picky on these guys from what I'm hearing. I feel the blend of cleans and screams brings a unique vibe. Especially the way they did it. Not every solo has to be completely "original" in my opinion. I felt this had a lot of creativity behind it. Great track for me. But I still respect your guys's opinion!
The thing is im watched them live and they played this song. I was awesome, and matt does great vocals...later i watched the video and was feeling the same as you...that he could bring more to this song. But as i was saying...live the song is perfect as it is. Sometimes is less more, and even in a liveset where matt using a lot of his vocal range is this song...something like a small island where you can bang your head, and sing to a strict lined song....hope you understand what i mean^^ dont get me wrong, its a simpel song (for trivium stuff) but very good.
Okay, I respect your guys' opinion, and you seem like really chill dudes, so I'll try and keep my words neutral. I really couldn't keep my eyes from rolling during some of your criticisms of Matt's voice. Yeah, it's not as gritty or didn't have as much umph as it did on Shogun or In Waves, but he blew out his voice, so this is an accomplishment. On their last album Silence in the Snow, I would've understood that criticism because his voice sounded VERY weak, but as it is here, I have no issues with it. I don't understand your issue with the unclean vocals at all. They're not as gutteral as other bands for sure, but that's because Matt's growl isn't exactly a growl. It's more of a yell than anything, in my opinion. I get disliking it, but I really don't think a more gutteral vocal would do well. Trivium's songs are written for Matt's voice. Using another more gutteral style would mean changing up the style of the songs as a whole. You guys also made some comments about a riff being similar to Arch Enemy, and that's probably because they're both melodic bands metal bands. I dunno. Also, the reason that solo sounded familiar is because that arpeggio is pretty damn popular in metal. That's actually one of my issues with the song. That, and the solo is too gratuitous for my tastes. Anyway, other than that, nice review dudes. Glad you guys didn't shit all over them, at least. Over the past few albums, Trivium has been erring more towards the mainstream, but I don't think that in itself means they're bad or untalented. Anyway, you earned a sub.
obviously everyone has their opinion you guys arent wrong by any means in what you said, but i think what needs to be taken into account is that matt blew his vocals thus the scream lost some its balls as one would expect. i wouldn't go as far to say his vocals hinder trivium because it serves the band and the song. i've always leaned towards clean and harmonic vocals, because once you get to parts where theres a scream or distorted vocals it can really drive home the theme or message in a song. the use of a melodic vocal style also can give more opportunity to make changes throughout the album where as if you just use distorted it can get repetitive really quick. take example if BFMV screamed all of tears dont fall it would lose alot of the hook that comes during the parts the screams are there. and if you look at avenged sevenfold arguably the biggest modern day rock/metal band right now, if they stuck with there sound from waking the fallen they more than likely would have never grown to what they are now.
So what’s your opinion now ?? After going off your reactions to catastrophic and what the dead men say and seeing you both jizz in your pants do you still think Matt’s vocals hold the band back ?? I think not 😉
so lets make it a clean what does it Matt mean when he says - The sin and the sentence Penance in the fire.??? does it mean when the man trying to say the truth he burn all of it and try to speak the lie and burn the truth .?
To me it feels like his clean voice is missing the grit it had in previous albums (mostly Shogun). I totally get what you're trying to say, shame about all the dislikes but to each their own. Also, the solo reminds me of Vivaldi so the influence probably goes way back hah.
I hear a heavy Iron Maiden influence in this one, the groove is nice, I think the singer's clean vocals aren't bad, nothing special, but not bad; neither are the growls/harsh vocals. Nice melodic bits to this one. Not a bad tune at all. Kinda generic and "meh" but not bad.
@@TwoToeTags I agree ! Was just interesting because I watched the new trivium reactions and than the sin and the sentence reactions and you didn't seem really into it. Anyway love the vids dudes ! Keep rockin
Raul Bratan Why not? Metallica is legendary. One of if not the most iconic metal bands to ever exist. Paved the way for many modern bands. Highly respected in the industry. Massive success over decades of work. Stop being a hater.
What's losing you is the same vocalist doing things you should see one vocalist doing within the song. Matt Heafy is that good at both, but this is MEANT to demonstrate the new drummer...and rightfully so. I know who Alex Bent is now... You judge this, and the whole band...but you didn't listen. but. wait. you're pretentious fuckers. so Am I!!!! You don't know it tho. Nevermind.
@@TwoToeTags not aimed at you guys in particular. Trivium are just seen as that sell out metal band due to their tendency to construct songs that will generally get radio time and are seen as 'accessible metal'. They're like a beginners guide to the metal world.
Captain Shocks We know what you mean and we know the types of people you’re talking about but it’s definitely not us. We like what we like regardless of popularity or radio friendliness. From Disturbed to Cattle Decapitation and everything in between except Five Finger Death Punch because they’re the Nickleback of metal.
Trivium keeps getting worse with each new album. I still like them but this song is very generic with lame riffs and poor structure. The solo by Corey is the only redeeming thing.
Fuck that. If it wasnt for matts vocals i wouldnt like this band in the first place. His vocal work on Shogun is some of my most favorite period. I mean dont get me wrong. I fucking love all of it. Corey is a beast and paolo lol is one hell of a bassist. Nah bro. This new drummer fits them the best since Travis as well. Eh. Opinins are a bitch and i respect your opinions on Matt. But fuck no. No matt on vocals no trivium for me haha.
I loved ascendency for his vocals and after that, for me it was downhill a complete 180 of vocals not the same. I personally would like to hear a different vocalist. the instruments outshine him.
