PEEK & CRITIQUE -- for writers of rhyming picture books, prose picture books, and children's poetry -- is a series that explores concepts taught in The Lyrical Language Lab online course, such as poetic meter, rhyme, sound devices, word choice, lyrical language, imagery, and scansion. I read and critique YOUR submitted writing samples of rhyming picture books, prose picture books, and children's poetry, explaining concepts along the way.
This is a FREE service for kidlit writers! You do not need to have taken my Lyrical Language Lab course to participate. This service is open to ALL kidlit writers!
In this episode, I look at three rhyming picture book samples and talk about iambic meter, trochaic meter, anapestic meter, imagery, and word choice.

Great to see this live analysis of meter, rhyme, and the demonstration of when a mess-with-the-stress error has occurred. I'm so grateful for the authors who, by submitting, help all of us hone our rhyming picture book craft.

This is really awesome. I'd been searching for this kind of video for a long time. It really amazes me to see how you effortlessly scan those stressed and unstressed syllables and eventually figure out the metre in which the poem is written. As for me, I have to refer to dictionary for almost every word, particularly polysyllabic, to make sure if the syllable (which sounds stressed) is really stressed. Your way of explaining things is lucid and interesting. Do keep making more videos.🙏

Also, unrelated to poetry - I loved the "don't mess with stress." I'm from the west coast and married a southern boy. He stops at the RED light; I stop at the red LIGHT. (Admittedly, his makes more sense in that case.) In the rain, I use an umBRELla. He uses an UMbrella. Ha ha. Ok, off to listen to Stop Counting Syllables. Thanks again!

Because it's just not natural speech, and yes, I would say not to use it anywhere. When you see it in rhyming verse in particular, it screams that the author didn't know how to revise the line to rhyme correctly, or that the author is a novice.
