a video detailing the exploration and unknown regarding a long-forgotten family of trojans from time immemorial or maybe it's just me having fun with some relatively simple but incredibly damaging trojans, who knows cuz I sure don't
@@gertiethebus last actual video. As in, not a throwaway screen capture of a Commodore 128 emulator running a BASIC program thrown together in 30 seconds.
I mean even if he did so what? We have had ALOT going on in our lives over the last 8 years and he definitely gets a pass on not uploading when he doesn’t. He works hard and is a good man. He deserves a lot more credit than people give him.
@@PsychoFizz I absolutely wouldn't blame him for disappearing again. I am very aware that this channel has always been a hobby for Dan and nothing else. I've been here since 2013, I'm very used to no new Dan videos for a long time.
i translated the text at 12:43 and this is what is says: "The Devil Star Destroys The World And Rebirths" (Upper Text) "Stay Away From Upside Down Dreams" (Middle Text) "Ultimate Nirvana" (Lower Text) "Date of death: 2003" (Left and right text) i just had the urge to translate it after you said that you couldn’t read what was said in the wallpaper lol 😅
For more context, the bottom two lines were excerpted from _The Hear Sutra_ : "But dwelling in Prajna wisdom, Is [freed of delusive hindrance], Rid of the fear bred by it, And reaches [clearest Nirvana]."
1:22, the reason touhou "isn't anime" is because touhou officially is just the game series and some manga, and anime refers to animation, like tv or movies, pretty pedantic though imo
If we're being pedantic, the very first game in the series has an _animated_ cutscene and the games have frames of _animation_ for their characters, so I would argue that it IS anime.
it was just a gatekeeping practice to put a barrier between Touhou fans and the larger anime community that became very vocally obnoxious on the internet (places such as GaiaOnline for example). 2hu fans were more akin to "Japanophiles" than what anime fans at the time were calling themselves "otaku". Nowadays it looks stupid but I think it was done for a good reason.
there is so much fan-made animation and manga of touhou that you cant really make fun of someone new to this for not knowing and its been like that for a loooong time
The icon of the b-variant (two arrows on a blue background) is actually the old icon of Kingsoft Antivirus (it was widely used along with Rising and 360 in China in the early days). So you try to install an antivirus and you actually got a virus! Nice!
here's the text from 12:05 machine translated: "Date of Death 2003 The Devil's Star descends, and the world is reborn. Far from the Upside Down Dream Nirvana Date of Death 2003"
I think that fox is the FoxPro icon from the moricons DLL and the smiley face is from the Microsoft Entertainment Pack (Tetravex specifically)? I tried putting the anime girl face icon through Google Image Search and it thought it was Arle from the Puyo Puyo games which I can tell you as a fan is wrong, and then a smattering of other similarly red-haired video game characters, so it'll remain a mystery I guess...
@ 1:20 It's ok Dan, the entire thing of "Touhou is not an anime" is decades old silly beef that you would have had no context for. There's been a longstanding sort of... feud? (can I call it that in 2024?) between Touhou as a game series and its *many* supplemental forms of media that people are more likely to get exposed to - so despite its generally anime-ish art style, people tend to think Touhou is an anime when in reality Touhou is many things and originated from a game series. "Touhou is not an anime" is a distillation of that war that after all these years continues to fly over people's heads because "if it quacks and walks like a duck, it's a duck" logic doesn't tell the story it's trying to say lol Anyway thanks for making virus videos also still in 2024, love the process remaining nearly unchanged after so long. :)
12:04 (Translation might be inaccurate) A demon star descends, the world is reborn. / An evil omen is born, the universe is reborn. Keep away from inverted dreams / Stay away from illogical fantasies / Avoid confused delusions Ultimately, Nirvana / Finally, enlightenment Date of death: 2003
Man, to see more danooct1 videos in this day and age even with the landscape that youtube has become is a really comforting thing. I remember seeing your CIH videos back in 2014, and I believe they were the first ones I saw on your entire channel. I still have memories of going through all your DOS virus vids from back then and even now, I sometimes go back to see those older videos. Never change, seriously, but definitely keep these viruses coming!
The background is in chinese 12:00 and it says the following: "The Devil Star Destroys The World And Rebirth stay away from upside-down dreams" and at the sides it says: "Date of death: 2003" kinda weird
I feel like I must have been just beginning to get interested in malware and what it does (was a huge pastime in college, when I wasn't doing homework, playing the piano, hanging with friends, I was reading malware material), and so when I saw this video, I couldn't figure why it peaked my interest so much...I think because I got one of these when a now ex-friend of mine sent me a trojanized file, and I had some similar things happen to my computer. thanks for the blast from the past, Dan.
I remember waatching these videos by u when i was in 7th grade. This type of stuff got me into computers and shi. Now im a cs major genuinely loving what i do, crazy how youre still sticking around broo
I thought the smiley face icon was from the badass Windows worm with the insulting, profane message and the "no" button that moves if you try to click on it.
The foreign words (chinese simplified, btw) in the wallpaper say (according to google lens): "THE DEVIL STAR DESTROYS THE WORLD AND REBIRTH" "STAY AWAY FROM UPSIDE DOWN DREAMS" "ULTIMATE NIRVANA" Then on both sides "DATE OF DEATH: 2003"
Typically an anime character comes from a Japanese animated cartoon. At least in western vernacular. Anime is just a Japanese to “Roman” language spelling of the word anime in Japanese which is shortened from animation which originates from Greek, I believe. Touhou is a series of video games, so technically not anime. And the original designs by the creator, Zun, don’t really look that way up until he stopped being a one man production studio. I think that’s an accurate explanation.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and make a wild guess that the anime character is from an MMORPG, I don't know which one. It would be cool if you had the language pack installed so we could see what that prompt was (possibly Chinese, given the content of the rest of the video!) The message around 6:33 might be related too. As for the Touhou thing, you didn't do anything terrible. It's just a meme in the fandom that Touhou is not an "anime". Back then there was a much larger divide between the Touhou fanbase and the anime community, despite the characters being drawn in a style everyone would recognize as anime. Rabid anime fans who entered the community from gateways such as Naruto or Death Note would eventually find Touhou, a videogame franchise, and inevitably ask "what anime is this" on their conquest to consume mass amounts of anime, much to the annoyance of the Touhou fanbase which had trouble explaining that there is no Touhou anime and that there would never be one. Very dedicated fans (in Japan) later did produce an anime you could watch, an impressive feat for an internet community, but I digress. Touhou fans were happy that you covered the joke ransomware, you did a good deed.
Man, this was a wild set. I could be wrong, but I think that smiley face version that said to install an "invitation" dropped a file called PARTY.INI in the Windows folder. I wonder what that's about? 🤔
I suggest that you use disk backup programs like wimlib, Acronis True Image, Norton Ghost, or AOMEI Backupper, to backup the entire OS partition so you don't need to install Windows every time a trojan/virus deletes critical files. It could be a lot faster than reinstalling Windows.
This talk about messing with co-worker computers made me remember the time when I was an intern and along with another inter, we learned that the PCs at work had a keyboard shortcut that would rotate the screen. So, when a friend of ours (another intern) was away from her desk, we went and flipped her screen upside down and let the computer sleep. She was already having a rough day, and when she saw the screen upside down she was so over with it that I kinda felt bad while laughing. We immediately showed her how to fix it, but boy, her reaction was gold.
7:35 What exact version of Windows XP shows 'Professional' on the startup screen? All the Professional ISO versions that i try just shows the standard 'Windows XP' startup. It's just an SP1 version thing? Can't remember.
1:17 With the touhou characters incident you were both correct and incorrect. Touhou uses the anime art style but it is not an anime. The term anime is usually associated with Japanese animated tv series.
I subscribed to you on my first channel back in 2009. So cool to see you're still making new videos, and even still with interesting viruses you haven't done before
Very epic trojan indeed. And surely you are a professional computer user. Demostrating trojan and malware on actual machine and fix them is hard even for me!
absolutely love your stuff your channel got me into playing with old viruses/worms on old systems and vm's. so thank you your truly an inspiration in a way.
it is possible that the reason why the mouse buttons got inverted is the virus is switching the mouse settings from right handed to left handed. You can change the hand orientation in control panel so it will invert the mouse buttons so left handers can use a mouse properly.
You should use one of those IDE to SD Card adapters. That would make reinstalling Windows much faster and easier, since all you would have to do is create an image of a Windows environment fully installed on the SD Card, which you'd restore when your virus is done exhibiting its payloads. It'd make the overwriting payloads a bit faster too, since any decent SD Card easily maxes out the bandwidth these computers allocate to the hard disks.
Also...I'm trying to find the article you found, Dan, but it seems to have been potentially deleted from the internet. I couldn't seemingly find anything on the Internet Archive, either, which is odd. Does Symantec block the Wayback Machine, by any chance?
Going from a simple joke program to something that destroys the computer seems slightly more than just a simple variation... Remind me to check if someone else in the comments fixes the codepage stuff and decodes the message at 6:45
Since OCR seems to be messing up on that text, I rewrote the first 3 lines myself: ÎÊÌì°ÎʱÀЇ£¿ÎÊμØ°Îʱ¾ø£¿ ÎÒÐÄÉîÉî`¦£¬ÖÐÓÐǧǧ½á¡£ ǧ½áÍò½á½â²"¿°£¬.ç.çÓêÓêÂúÔ°À` Some special characters (mainly ` and °) may be wrong but the letters should be correct for the most part. I did notice that certain groups of 2 characters repeat themselves in a row.
@@VoAviation Somewhat decodes to: 问天哪何时有?问地哪何时休? 我心惶惶`¦,中有纠纠结。 纠结万结解不开,.ç.ç欲欲无边哀。 纠结令我心碎欲。 我中心已失,未能止。 "Ask the heavens, when will it end? Ask the earth, when will it cease? My heart is in turmoil, tangled within. The knots are endless and cannot be untied, .ç.ç boundless sorrow. The entanglement breaks my heart with despair. My central heart has lost, unable to cease."
@@INTELLIGENCECASINO What encoding is that? But pretty good job! P.S. I think it didn't decode ".ç.ç" properly because I couldn't understand what the actual character in the image was - it looked like a dot, but it was in the middle, so I used the closest character (which was a regular dot). If you can find that character then you'll likely be able to resolve the .ç.ç part as well
@@VoAviation original encoding was likely UTF-8 but the text was incorrectly processed as a single-byte encoding, im assuming ISO-8859-1 or GB2312. i tried with ·ç·ç too but it didn't really yield any results
Funny this virus started as a set of trojan programs and then you get this ominous flaming Chinese text while your PC gets destroyed. Really escalated, huh?
Hey Danooct, I'm currently writing a companion virus for MS-DOS (just for fun). If I complete it, can I send it to you if you want to review it for a video
10:43 I'm surprised after all these years you would still leave drives (or other removable media) plugged into the computer when testing malicious things, thought that'd be a force of habit for you by now XD
Despite watching the rensenware video when it came out, forgot about it when I got into touhou a few years ago. It was fun rewatching it now that i have played the games. Don't worry about the anime thing.
12:40 according to google translate "The Demon Star Falls, the world ends, and the world resurrects" "Far away dreams" "Ultimate Nirvana" on the sides : Date of Death 2003
