Goal of this presentation: after watching this presentation you will feel more knowledgeable and confident in applying (either motor or row) trolling as a tactic to catch muskies on your home waters.
Why troll?
- When casting is not producing results
- It is certainly not a shallow thing…. but when the shallow bite is slow
- When you want to cover water quickly… and LEARN your water!
- When bait / muskies are suspended over open water
- When muskies are deeper than traditional retrieves can take you
- Keeps your lure in the strike zone “longer”
Do you need a lot of fancy gear? - no! Just a rod, reel, line and lure
How does it work? It is a Function of 4 things:
1). amount of line out
2). line diameter
3). Boat speed
The strategy: find the baitfish…. find the muskies
- Locate baitfish / muskies on your electronics - or “presumed” location
- Run your lure “around” the fish

Hey Chas you need to get a copy of Precision Trolling. Speed is the least important variable for depth. Line diameter and bill design have more of an effect. Enjoy your vlogs!

I very much agree with you in bill design. Not covered here as this is basics. But interesting point on speed. Of course, regarding floating divers…speed certainly determines running depth. But, once a lure reaches what we might call its “critical velocity,” then yes…speed can be removed as a major contributor to running depth. It would then, as you stated be more determined by line diameter and bill design. These are concepts that I would consider beyond the basics category for most anglers entering the trolling arena for the first time. I suppose it might be time for a follow up video. Great comment!

@@MuskyMastery Chas just got back from a long day on the water. Saw huge schools on the charts that looked like solid ground. Trolled up and down alway around but nothing. Last nights luck will get me back out there tomorrow!

Dude, you forgot to mention to spray some grape' flamme' on the trolling lures. Great stuff. Trying it tomorrow on the lake you know that we are on. On this lake you have to be ready to vary your speeds because of the sudden depth changes.

Dude, I would like to see a follow up vlog to this one! If possible, could you dive into the electronics a little more. Screen shots of Cisco pods (regular, mega down and side imaging examples would be cool to see), sensitivity settings, drag setting when holding rod versus rod holder. Does your trolling pass depend on wind direction, speed or current? Are you doing multiple passes in opposite directions? I know you explore different depths from your last video. Do you ever add weight to your leader or modify the DR to achieve even greater depth? I like the camera adjustment to a tighter zoom of the white board. It makes a difference! I also accept the challenge and will make it a point to invest more time trolling in the future.

My biggest roadblock for trolling is doing it solo. In NY we can run 5 lines per person, and I have planar boards and the like, but I have an aluminum boat with a tiller. Impossible to keep straight while setting up planar boards and down rods, and even trolling two boards is a hassle trying to reel up at the end of my troll

Troll with the wind I know your problems well it's easier with the wind. At least while setting up multiple lines. Contour trolling is best with one rod in your hand flatline trolling as they say.

I also have a tiller it can be a pain! if you can "lock down" your motor to stop it from turning you can drop your trolling motor ( if you have a bow mount) and use that to stear and keep you straight or on track while your main motor or kicker does the pushing, extremely easy if your trolling motor has auto pilot or a hand remote but it still can be done with just a foot pedal.I know my old mercury does not have a lever to lock down the motor like my newer Yamaha does so this may not help much but I hope it does or at least gives you an idea!

Depending if you have a terrova trolling motor or some sort of minnkota . You can always set it to follow the countour or put auto pilot on that way the boats moving at all times.

Lots of great suggestions below here by folks who have run multiple lines. I am in agreement with all of these suggestions too. I have had success using my bow mount in constant set on a contour line at a very slow speed, while you organize your lines / boards. Most of the time I just keep the motor in gear with my tiller and put the boards out. My tiller arm is pretty tight so the boat doesn't walk. I would also recommend getting comfortable with 2 rods and working your way up to 5 slowly.

Hopefully not a dumb question, and hopefully i didnt miss it in this video, but how do i know at what depth to run my boat at when trolling?

Ok I’m confused. With the same amount of line out, my lure will run deeper the *faster * I go ? That’s counterintuitive to me. If I stop, the lure will just hang straight down. Slower should equal deeper. In the example @ 24:50 I would expect to only need 60’ of line out to hit 12’ depth @ 2mph.

With floating divers, if you stop moving…they will float back to the surface, and cease to dive. The faster you troll, keeping line constant, the deeper the bait will travel (within some limits). Also… keeping speed constant: more line means greater running depth. Hope this helps. All questions are good questions!

Great info for this "caster". Is there a better time or weather pattern than others to troll?

Trolling works during any weather phases of course but could be best during tough conditions because you can cover so much water!

My next musky investment is a trolling setup. However holding a rod for prolonged periods of time doesn’t make me want to troll. So I think a blog on holders and such is necessary especially if I talk my wife to go out fishing with. No way is she going to hold a rod.

I use Scotty Orca rod holders and like them. Some guys run Folbes holder which is similar. I troll for salmon and musky and even use them for walleye.

Chas I love almost all your videos, but this one falls short. A discussion of "basics" should include how the drag should be set, how the rod should be positioned and the best leaders to use. Also, do you recommend line-counter reels, and if not, what's the best way tp determine how much line you have out? And, how do you know you have a fish (if in rod holder) and what should you do when one bites? Those are basics I wish you would have addressed.

Respectfully, this video is called "trolling basics." So if you found it boring...I'd assume you already know these fundamental tactics. Not sure if an angler like yourself needs any information (perhaps you are well versed...) but if you would like a vlog with higher level tactics...please ask those questions here! Thank you.
