As a trombonist, receiving guidance from the many great teachers out there is valuable. However, it is important to not lose sight of the fact that we are actually our own best teachers. In this video I share a few key steps to becoming your own best teacher. Trusting yourself, building intuition and learning how to observe without judgment are the topics that I cover. These tips can be effective both on and off the horn, so be creative with how you apply the strategies from this lesson!

Thank you so much for this session. I'm 76, and I have learned many of these concepts through my 50 years of professional playing, but I still need to refresh myself on what you have taught. I am still hung up on judging myself instead of observing. Thank you for all of your instruction videos.

Thanks for checking out the video Jim. We as musicians/humans should be ever learning. We all need a gentle reminder of that from time to time!

This is more than a trombone lesson, what you shared is applicable to life in general. Thank you so much Dion, really inspiring!

It's a daily thing for sure! One thing that came to mind during this was a concept that "The Talent Code" talks about: myelin building around nerve fibers to increase impulse speed. This stuff is built and reinforced daily.

Hi Dion! I would be very grateful if you could make a video on how to practice at home with practice sordino or Yamaha silent brass (both I have) My professional trombone pals all say, that practice sordino is harmful, it destroys embouchure. Is this true? Unfortunately, for the most part, I can only practice at home, so it would be helpful if you could provide advice on WHAT and HIW MUCH you think you should practice with this tool. Thank you, and God bless You!

Practice mutes can be good and bad. I currently use the SHHH mute and it’s the best practice mute I’ve ever played. The resistance is very similar to playing the horn open. I have tried the best brass and Yamaha mutes and they were both weird for me. It made me change my embouchure to fit the mute, that’s not good. IMO be careful with how much any practice mute makes you change the way you blow. The less resistance the better.
