STORYLINE:
At least 400 US troops who have spent the past week battling al-Qaida and Taliban fighters in Eastern Afghanistan returned to Bagram airbase near Kabul on Sunday.
The US military says the withdrawal does not spell an end to the offensive - they called it "repositioning".
Bagram has been the staging post for the offensive against al Qaeda militants holed up in caves near the city of Gardez.
'Operation Anaconda' - codenamed after the snake which encircles its prey and squeezes it to death - was launched last Saturday.
So far, it has cost eight US and seven Afghan lives. The U.S. military says it had about a thousand troops in the area.
The military says the al Qaeda and Taliban rebels have now been reduced to a few hundred, many of them holed up in remote caves.
About 10 empty Chinook helicopters left Bagram air base on Sunday morning, returning in the afternoon laden with about 40 US troops each.
Returning troops described their experiences at the front, where sometimes they were as close as 100 metres (yards) from their foes.
The battle twisted along a 10 kilometre (six-mile) front line of bunkers and caves up to the top of three thousand metre (10 thousand feet) peaks around the village of Shahi Kot.
Conditions at the frontline have been severe - several soldiers have complained of altitude sickness and troops had to cope with snow and freezing temperatures.
